A Hong Kong horror film with an arty edge.

A handicapped scientist  tries to unravel the mystery of how the ghost of a young boy can get trapped in a Menger cube and ultimately solves the mystery of how ghosts come to be in the first place.  A Menger cube is a theoretical fractal construct, a cube made totally of nothing.

This film provokes a lot of thought, like about how things are connected to each other in life. In this film they are connected through an almost invisible strand of silk.

While the film is not high on gore content it does have lots of creepy moments and I jumped out of my skin at least once.  There something about the inscrutibility of Asian horror that will allow me to jump and be frightened when I wouldn't normally jump for a western film.  This film definitely has the horror aspect down.

The one thing I didn't like about this film was that overall the story didn't make a helluva lot of sense.  Oh, the narrative did but I found some of the behavoir odd - or possibly theres some kind of cultural thing going on that I didn't get.  I don't really want to get into exactly what I found off because it would be a huge spoiler if you ever do decide to watch this. However, as a hint, it was the way the ghosts behaved that I found distracting but only after the film was over.

The end of the film, itself, gets rather arty. And while it leaves some things up to your interpretation, it leaves you with a thought-provoking message about the true nature of ghosts.  Good one to watch if you want a quick scare but have some time to think afterwards.
