SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Getting to know you, getting to know all about you...  /  New girl...question about feature scripts??
Posted by: GirlO, March 8th, 2011, 12:24am
Hey,  this is a hello from a new girl (so, hello!) and mostly a question.

I’ve been hanging around for a week or two, and already I’ve come across so many things I didn’t know that I needed to know.
Anyway, not a newbie to writing, but pretty newish to screenwriting. Been trying to read/learn/do everything I can for the last year or so…got plenty to learn!

Question/request – I have insomnia (now that’s out in the open :)) I need some feature scripts to read? Far better than staring at the roof… Anyway, shorts scripts just – I dunno, too quick for me – I need something to sink my teeth into! If you’re an SSer and aren’t thinking about taking off as soon as I’ve read your script …Then great! (sounds like I’m blackmailing. I know) But, yeah. I’d just rather read something from someone who will actually acknowledge the read, and maybe help me with seemingly dumb questions in the future. It helps me, too. The more I read, the better I will ‘hopefully’ get. I think that’s how it’s supposed to work…
All the ppl that seem to be regular around here have a lot of feedback on older feature scripts, and I’m just unsure if my comments would actually still be welcome on them??
Thanks. Link me. PM me. Whatever gets you hot.
:) I'm a quick reader slash responder.

Welcome Girl0,

If it's been a while since the last comment a short note in the thread and a couple of days wait should tell you if the author is still around for feedback.   If they're pretty recent they are fair game - however, you may want to do the note thing in those threads as well to see if the author is around (if there aren't other comment).  You can also start a thread in the chat section asking if anyone has any features they would like you to read.

Dear Naomi,

I've been dealing with a weird thing that prohibits sleep. I initially had problems when I was twenty-six. The whole story is horrific and I can't go into detail here, but I had a ridiculous high ANA (Anti-Nuclear-Anti-bodies) with a positive nucleolar pattern indicative of a systemic sclerosis.

Sixteen years of remission went by-- years of (mostly good health) and I was thankful, as I am now, for every good day I could get.

But always, I knew it was knocking at my door: the blue feet and white fingers. I didn't know. I think about it now. And aren't blue limbs that thing of death? Slow blood, barely moving through what is supposed to be an energetic system of life? And I prayed it wouldn't come back...  That struggle to breath. To catch the living flame of life-- you know what it's like to struggle to breath. Struggle to breath? Is there a tablet for that?

No. There isn't. And that's where I am...

And where do you go when you're short of breath and there's nothing to take? Nothing anyone can sell you to make you feel better? But I'm a good actress and people have no clue.

Whatever I have, it has to do with a polyp in my right sinus. If I could just cut off the right side of my head, I'd be great, because that's where all the problems come from.

In my right nostril, the godamned thing is hard like a scab that will not heal. There is no moisture. At the back of my head behind my right ear it's like there's something there, like a cancer, but it's not cancer. But it's full or something. The cartilage, the tissue, whatever the hell it is is-- screwed up on the right side...

...and somehow, that thing, sitting in my sinus, it causes an immune reaction. It affects the tissue. Everything constricts, and it burns. I even dream dreams of running and being short of breath. But there's nothing for me. Nothing to help me. Because as far as modern medicine goes, it's archaic. I am cursed.

I've recently taken up the possibility of using "frowned on magic" to help myself. "Why wouldn't I?" I say. And my husband knows. He kisses me on the forehead because he knows how strong I am. He knows what I would do, if I could.

But still, I think about it... Do I want to go that far? There's a saying that G-d is very meticulous with those He loves. Do I want to disrupt His rule? If He would have me move foreword? In spite of pain?

Indeed, though we don't know it, He might be compelling us, with the pain. How else? I wish there were another way.

Sandra

Feedback is always welcome.  Don't feel that your opinion doesn't count as much as those who've been here for years.  You don't get the same people going to the movies, do you?

Perhaps you can be more specific as to what type of script you're looking...

Anything really. Yesterday I read a feature about a dude made of sticks, who was on a journey to find his birth parents...it was pretty messed up, but I still learned something from it  ;D anything goes.

I read Phil's Mafia Dogs sometime ago. If your looking for something light hearted, I think thats a good feature to learn from. I'm sure he'd point you in the right direction. He's a whore for reads. Unless its been optioned already???

Bert's The Farm is another good example of writing if you're looking for a horror feature.

It's true.  I am a whore for reads.  It hasn't been optioned yet, but I expect that to change once Bad Penguin gets off the ground...

Naomi, if I were you, I'd just jump over to some of my scripts...Unforgettable, Fade to White, or of course, if you think you can handle it, Key to my Heart.  Oh yeah, what about my latest and greatest OWC, The White Women?

You can't go wrong when you read my scripts, and I'm a big whore as well.

I can see Jeff at the ironing board, steam iron in hand, putting iron on transfers about his shirts -- Catchy things like

"Hey, read my scripts or catch dick drip"

"(on the front) We're all story-tellers... (on the back)  & Sellers"

"I work to support my writing habit"

"(on the front) I had sex with all of your mothers -- (on the back) While writing a screenplay about it."

But back to topic --> Yeah, read scripts... Lots of them.  Learn from those in the know and carve a bit of your own path.  It's hard to replicate someone else's style and delivery, but they can surely point you into the right direction if you have the ability to get there.

I don't and can't iron.  Actually had to break down and find a dry cleaner, as I'm flying solo now (no one to do my ironing for me)...had 14 shirts.

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Funny, Balt...maybe the 2nd 2...yeah, probably.

That would be a good t-shirt slogan
