SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Questions or Comments  /  Posting Stage Plays?
Posted by: SLM (Guest), September 18th, 2011, 4:30am
I realise this is a screenwriting site, first and foremost, but I wondered if anyone ever posts stage plays?

There's no separate section of course, so if they do they would be under the generic groupings.

To my knowledge, there's nowhere like SS for playwrights (and I have looked) with even Trigger St and Circalit now removing their playwriting sections.

Perhaps this is a gap in the market that might be filled by a separate board section on SS?

The Sept OWC set up was very theatrical, and a number of the entries for it could easily have been stage skits, which is what got me thinking.

Yes, you can.

Just label it as such to prevent confusion.

Sorry, I may not have made myself clear.

I was asking if anyone has posted plays - I realise you can, it would be no different to posting other scripts - but how common is it?

Is the site full of would be playwrights?

There are some, but not many.  We also have a couple of radio plays floating around.

Every once in a while a play is posted on the short script board. But it would be nice to have a board just for plays. I never have really tried to write a play, but I might someday.

It isn't very common and they don't usually get reviews, except for people who would post "this isn't a screenplay" or "it's not formatted correctly".

But you're welcome to buck that trend if you like.

SLM,

You've got a very good point, there.

There are some plays on the site.  I have a section (badly outdated) devoted to plays at: http://www.simplyscripts.com/plays.html .  And a number of plays are on the discussion board, e.g.,

http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?m-1263048834/
http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?m-1295819222/
http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?m-1198983531/

To Michael's point, they don't get reviewed often because folks are expecting a screenplay format.

Perhaps a "Stage Play" section on the discussion board would be warranted.  Not sure what the interest would be.  I would most definitely need to do something to indicate that the posting was a play rather than a screenplay lest every post be about 'bad formatting'.

Why not give it a try? I'm not sure if I would write for it, but I'd definitely read theatrical scripts and write reviews.

I am currently working on a play - the first I have written for a while, so we'll see. I might dig out some old ones too, and "digitalise" them to post (may as well make some use for them).

I have a considerable leaning towards stage plays, though I have also written other kinds of scripts. I often find that my ideas would be best suited to the Theatre. Ironic really as I am much more of a film buff than a theatre one!

I do belong to a British based Theatre social website, but it doesn't post scripts

MyPDFScripts used to have some stage plays on it (On Golden Pond being one).

It would be interesting to see if it did attract any support from the wider SS community and beyond...

SLM,  I posted in here a stage play named The Daily Life of a Dead Man at once. It was reviewed by Pia Tomson (Me). I supose she loves to read stage plays.

Helio - is it still up? If so, please link to it and I'll take a look. Thanks, Simon

I'm sorry, my friend, but I took it out. Perhaps Pia (Me) can help you with this. She has a copy.

And a reminder that anyone who finds one of these stage plays or radio plays in another section should let the moderators or Don know so that we can move it.

Michael,

Thanks for being proactive.  I am in the process of identifying Plays and will post in the mod thread the listing for those mods who are bored and want to move stuff.

Stand by.

It's really great that you have gone to so much effort to get this up and running - I have just taken a look, and I can see what you what you mean about the comments re formatting!

(Mind you, it doesn't help when a stageplay starts with the comment "This Screenplay is copyrighted...")

Thanks again for this, Don, Michael - let's hope it proves useful and used.

I have resubmitted my OWC entry as a stage piece - it looks and feels much more comfortable in this format.
