SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Questions or Comments  /  One Week Challenge Question
Posted by: Felipe, December 2nd, 2011, 9:32pm
If this information is already out there, please feel free to verbally abuse me and put me on your shit-list. I have been looking.

Is there any scientific or pre-determined schedule for OWC? I would love to participate, but, as luck would have it, I found out about this site a week after the last one.

I obviously don't run these so I have no clue how much work goes into putting one together, but it just seems like a great way to engage the community and keep your writing sharp. I would love to see this [sometimes] friendly competition happen more often.

If anyone could point me in the direction of a potential schedule for these, I would hate to accidentally miss the next one.

Again, sorry if this has already been asked/answered. I've been looking around the boards for the past few days and haven't been able to find anything.

I believe the next one will be in either January or February.

New rules are anyone who gets more votes than Ryan gets a mug! I'll have to buy one, or plan a raid on one of the old winners.

Looking to get on my shit list?  Consider yourself placed.

I kid.

There are generally about four per year -- approximately quarterly -- but none of that is written in stone, as it is a bit of work for Don and they occur at his convenience.

Ryan's guess is probably pretty close, but there is also plenty of notice that they are coming up if you keep your eyes peeled.

There are no winners in the OWC. It's a challenge only and Don only gave mugs away recently to  the "reader's choice" scripts. Phil, Cindy and I got them for the Gimme Credit comp.

The OWC is usually run in January, April, july and October.  -11 was different, but....  :)

Thanks for the info, everyone! I look forward to the next challenge.

We all win when we have fun!

I have a brilliant twist on the challenge.  Hopefully, Don will let me do the next one.

Unless, of course, you are the winner  :)

Let me guess...we all (as opposed to the small, un-named minority) use scripts we wrote prior to the OWC and modify them to fit the challenge, and then act like we wrote and conceived them in the 1 week limit.

Pretty close?

Ah, and I never said there OWC winners! Only mug winners! EVERYONE knows there are no OWC winners.

Maybe we can do something else until the next one. Script Club, 6 or 7 week challenge...

The Killer Game was good and fun, but I think it's about to pull into the last station.  :)

Let's write a story how people with SS mugs start disappearing one by one. Everyone assumes a jealous member without a mug has done something unthinkable. A list of suspects is compiled, an investigation launched. But where are the bodies?

Maybe it turns out the mug holders have secretly gathered for what is assumed to be a nefarious project. Homeland Security is alerted, orphans are rounded up and brought to Jeff's house to be slaughtered.

Turns out the mug holders were just planning the SS New Years party!

Sorry, I had beers and coffee at dinner. Messes with my head.

I need something that will kick me back into gear. :)

I would do one, but I just don't have time. As it is, I have scripts I want to start, but can't at the moment. I love starting a brand new script! There's something cool about creating new characters, and there's that part of your mind that says, "maybe this time I'll get it right!"

I started writing about a year ago, and had 5 features by August. But I had learned enough by then to know they were all pretty bad. So I decided to rewrite them, in some cases more or less from scratch as new stories with mostly the same characters and premise. It's taking a lot of time. I'm hoping by Feb or March I can start something new. That's how long it's taking me.

But I will take time off for the OWC, whenever that is! That's become a good little break from whatever I'm working on.

Only a few of us can combine brilliance and modesty so well.

I've never done a 7 WC before, is it fun?

The previous 6WC and 7WC isn't an official "challenge" run by Don. It started with some of us just needing a push to write and complete a feature. We agreed on a theme and then we just did it. They are usually pretty rough first drafts posted here, but that is of course to be expected in such a short time. I do think however that they all have been good enough that with rewrites after the reviews have all turned out good in the end.

I wrote a horror slasher for the Christmas themed one. It was sort of a protest by me only because I didn't want to do a Christmas story. That one is currently being rewritten. The people that produced the web series Seriously Wounded (soon to be released) are waiting for that script. We'll see what happens. The one I did for the thriller 7WC was rewritten by a friend of mine and it was requested by a director in S. Africa. He didn't like it, but you never know what can happen.  :)

Sounds fun to me, I'm just starting my very first full length Screenplay. But would be willing to do something like this as well, never to many screenplays going on right? :]

After the end of the year, I won't have anything really pressing, so another OWC or a 7WC would be a good way to jump right back in:)

I wouldn't mind joining the 7owc. I have to redeem myself from not finishing the last one. And, at least I know it's going to not look so good in the first draft. :)

Okay! Cool! Let's see if there are any more people interested. I think there might be a regular OWC in January though. Most people might be too busy before Christmas?

I personally find the 7WC very helpful as I seem to do better when under the gun than left on my own. :)

Ditto! I'm pretty sure the only reason I'm making this last push before the 31st is because I've already extended this deadline once... ;)

If you've started your first feature, I wouldn't recommend doing a 7WC.  There's a lot of pressure involved in it.  Just work on your own at a leisurely pace.

Well I would be willing to do both actually, pressure is good to IMO. I'll continue with the feature and do a 7 WC. I dont mind losing more hair.  :o
