What a score this little flick turned out to be for Paramount.  It's a "found footage" film made for next to nothing, and was picked up by the studio for under a million dollars.  Just beat out Ghost Protocol at the box office and hauled in 34.5 million.  The reviews are atrocious and the box office declined by Saturday night once word spread how bad this stinker was.  But the money has already been made.

Goes to show how a great trailer and clever viral campaign("The Vatican does not endorse this film.")  can go.

I have no plans on seeing it, so I thought I'd post this video of the theater crowd's reaction at the film's sudden ending.  Be warned, it contains the last few moments of the film.  If you fast forward to the sixty second mark, you can bypass the ending and go straight to the reaction.  I don't know if I've ever heard such nasty boos in a theater ever.

EDIT: Never mind, Paramount just took down the video.

It was a lame movie to go watch...waste of my $10 for sure. Good trailers will bring people in there though .....grrrrr

Hah....wow, that was fast.

I actually saw it before it disappeared into the ether, though -- looks to be a total suck-fest.

And they top it off with a viral marketing ploy...

Just in case you didn't feel screwed enough...
You can give them your IP address, credit card number, first born child.... *sigh*

I was too late to see the video but looked it up and the ending feels like a cheap shot to the viewer. I won’t be seeing this so thanks for the heads up.

Wow Dena, $10 is cheap for a movie. We can pay anything between $15 and $25 for a movie ticket here in Perth depending if it’s IMAX or not.

People need to stop complaining about this film. For a movie that was made "next to nothing" they did a damn good job with it. And at least it had actual demonic possessions in it, and not like the total lackluster "The Last Exorcism." I liked this film a lot, they did a really good job with it. Who cares if the ending was extremely abrupt and nothing was solved? People seemed to have been enjoying it until then, accept it for what it was. Maybe their budget was cut off when they got in that accident. That calls for a bit of money there, huh.

didn't see it, so i really can't comment on the film. however, i looked up the ending too and i would have been completely outraged if i paid to see this. it's not the abrupt ending that would bother me but the whole "to see what happened, visit this website"

sign of the times...

All about trailers in this genre. Look at Shutter Island. I actually really liked that, but the movie was not what the trailers suggested. However, it's the trailers that justify the budget.

As mentioned, the number one gripe about the film is the ending which seems to come fast and is over too quickly- followed by the viral ad marketing. To an audience this suggests the full ending, or an alternate one, can be seen at the site. Or if there's something you missed, it's at the site. It isn't actually the case, but the placement and timing (as mentioned by Slate and others) gets viewers more angry.

While I'm sure a lot of tickets sold due to the contreversy and/or the 'found footage sci-fi horror sub genre has taken off (Last Excorism made money; Paranormal Activity will soon have a third sequel) Let's say you are right and people enjoyed the film. Then you are hit with an ending that is unsatisfactory both in character and narrative. Then moments later it's suggested (by placxement) that the unanswered questions and/or what happened after is *on* the viral site.

In other words, the film has no ending

And you tell me it's not a big deal?

Not to me at least. The ending didn't affect me as it did to everyone else. I liked it. To each his or her own, I suppose. Open-ended finales get me giddy because it gets my imagination going. What happened to Isabella? Or what about Ben and Michael? Did they die? Does Isabella escape and rampage as a possessed bitch? Personally, I was more upset by the fact that the movie's trailers/commercials suggest that the entire story is focused on Maria (Isabella's mother), and yet, there are only two scenes with her in it. But I'm sure there are people out there who enjoyed the fact that Maria wasn't the main antagonist in the film.

Like I said, to each his or her own.

Pure garbage.

Absolutely and totally pure crap...shit non ending or not.

I'd bet that 90%+ absolutely hated this piece of shit, and rightfully so.

It made a shitload of money, based on its no/low budget.  Congrats to them.  No one will ever watch it again.  It will tank in its 2nd weekend of release and most likely drop some 70-80% of last weekend's fiasco.

It's a very sad state of affairs when dreck like this make $33 Million on its opening weekend.  The paying audience is like a fucking herd of retarded goats being led in for their slaughter.

PURE HORSESHIT!  Anyone who sticks up for garbage like this should go ice fishing naked and freeze their assholes to the fucking ice and die where they sit.

OK, let's put it another way...

Anyone who likes this flavor of shit, also probably enjoys sitting butt-ass naked in their local YMCA sauna, when it's not working, next to eleven or so 65-82 year old 230+ pound, ugly as shit Romanian women.

In NYC, expect to pay ten or twelve dollars to see movies (and probably more in midtown Manhattan).

Janet and I go to a 'local' drive-in when we can.  It's eight dollars for a double feature and we usually sneak in a cooler of mojitos.

The Friday to Friday boxoffice comparison projects a 84% revenue drop. ;D

What an utter shitfest. Even my sixteen year old sister, who loves Paranormal Activity, said this one was shockingly awful. I'd say everyone who saw it deserves to have lost their money but the ending is a cheat by any standards and a spit in the face to even the average moviegoer.

And honestly, there's waaayyy too many responses here! What's wrong with you guys?! Everyone should go see Roman Polanski's Carnage instead. I'm too lazy to write a review for it.

EDIT: Rereading this, it sounds like I actually went to see the movie... I did not. That would be a mistake. I did watch the ending though, read the article about it and have heard plenty about it from someone who did see it.

Agree 1000000000%, and wouldn't even have posted if someone hadn't said it was good.

I was wasted last night and had to attack this total turd.

I think an adult ticket here in Oz, at a Multiplex, is about $16.50.

I wouldn't be sure, as I haven't been since 2008.

I enjoyed it.

Thought the demonic possessions were particularly well done. In most films they just swear a bit, here they were actually dangerous.

Don't know why anyone would have such a strong reaction against it, it was a decent found footage film........

Rick, in the name of all that is Holy and Bright...WTF?  You lied this?  How in the fucking whateverinsert, could you possibly say that?

Dude, this is downright shocking.  This is an example of the epitome of pure fucking dogshit shoveled down an unsuspecting idiot audience.

I am losing faith in you, Rick.  And I actually really mean that. WTF???

What was so wrong with it?

Better than most found footage films I've seen.

I think the controversay over the ending...in both its abruptness and its appeal to go to a website, have caused people to react to it in a less than objective way.

This certainly seems to be the case when reading the reviews on IMDB...the only two things people mention are the shaky cam and the ending. Neither bothered me, so I enjoyed it.
