NOTHING for Drive, Melancholia or Shame? Boo.

The only movie here that I've seen is Moneyball.  It's a fine film.  Snappy dialogue and well acted.  But best picture?  Ehhh.

I haven't seen any of the nominated movies :(

Best Screenplay (Original)
Bridesmaids, Written by Annie Mumolo & Kristen Wiig

I mean, I guess the movie was alright and all...but Oscar-worthy?

That is one of the years best? Hoo-boy.

Slow year for Hollywood.  No wonder they want SOPA passed.

Quoted from Carson Reeves (ScriptShadow)
I REALLY LIKED Bridesmaids.  But if a straight comedy gets an Oscar nomination in screenwriting, it's probably a weak year.

Amen.

This, I guess, is even more underlined by the fact that they "only" nominated 9 movies this year for best picture.

I did a little research and not since 1990 has a movie won the best picture oscar (Driving Miss Daisy) without its director also being nominated. I doubt it'll happen again so the "proper" best film list should look like this:

Best Picture
The Artist
The Descendants
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close
The Help
Hugo
Midnight in Paris
Moneyball
The Tree of Life
War Horse

And Bert, that avatar is freaking me out!

god this is embarrassing. extremely loud and incredibly close...really?! i never thought id see the day when jonah hill is up for an oscar. i'm actually okay with bridesmaids getting a nod. i enjoyed the screenplay and why not mccarthy? i dont think they should win, but they deserve a nomination.

but seriously, not an ounce of love for drive. f uck you academy.

This is the worst Oscars lineup I've seen in years and probably the first where I don't care who wins for anything.

I think everyone knew Drive was going to get snubbed. But not this snubbed. Even Albert Brooks got snubbed in favor of JONAH HILL?!!! You CANNOT be serious! Nothing against the kid. I saw Moneyball. He did fine. But just because he dropped the jokes, outbursts and sarcastic remarks does not mean he's turned in a stellar performance. If Michael Cera had been cast in the same role, nobody would've noticed.

(Please forgive the CAPS, mods. I hope you'll agree they have some merit).

Albert Nobs and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close should not have been nominated for anything (that makes Albert Brooks double-snubbed). Maybe they were meant for Oscar season but they only came out this past weekend. It's 2012. Nobody's even seen these fucking movies yet.

Other than Drive, too many snubs to mention, even for the Oscars. And way to bring back Billy Crystal. Talk about back to the well.

We all do the same song and dance every year but this is especially pathetic. Seriously.

UGH! What a disappointing year for the Oscars. Really bummed about Shame and Melancholia not being included. I really don't understand why Martha Marcy May Marlene slipped so much under the radar? I was positive Elizabeth Olsen was going to get a nomination at least for her role. It's also a surprise that 50/50 didn't at least get a nomination for best original screenplay, or where Extremely loud and Incredibly Close even came from? Isn't that movie being really poorly received? hmph. Let's hope Billy Crystal puts on a good show because there's really nothing else going for this year for me!

I'm guessing Von Trier's Cannes meltdown had something to do with Melancholia not being on that list. Because considering how boring it was...it would normally be a welcome addition to that bunch. Zzzz.

It was a relatively weak year, overall, but I dug McCarthy's nomination.  Nice to see Nolte get a nod for his work in Warrior, too, which is far better than the MMA movie that was advertised.

Also, unrelated, just got my WGA membership notification today.  I'll be all union-ed up in a few weeks!

one thing that i forgot to mention in my previous post. i'm super stoked that rango was nominated for best animated film. quite frankly, it was much better than some of that other garbage for overall film of the year.

I think Cannes had everything to do with Melancholia not being included. As for it being boring, we fans are doing just fine without you. I've since seen it twice and it lost none of its impact the second time around.

Very disappointed that Drive hasn't got one nomination??

It's been a weak year!

I keep hearing this and honestly, I don't buy it at all.

The past couple years, I've managed to put together pretty solid top 10 lists with around 4 or 5 being out and out awesome and the rest ranging from good to really good. This year, I was able to come up with a full ten films that were out and out awesome with maybe two that might not have been as good as I thought they were. This was also the first year where I saw everything I thought was worth seeing (except Shame). I've seen several of my top films more than once and I've rarely been disappointed. At this point, I just need to see Drive a second time and I'll have a pretty definitive top 10 list for 2011.

The Oscars never have been and never will be a valid reference point for the year's best films. I also think you, sir, haven't seen enough films this past year. I thought it was pretty stellar on the whole.

Drive did get one nomination if it matters. ;D
"Best Achievement in Sound Editing
Lon Bender
Victor Ray Ennis "

An interesting list of Best Directors this year. I really don't know who will win but my votes on Terrence Malick. :P Even if he doesn't win, at least being at the Academy Awards will get him a decent display picture on IMDB ;D ;D

Nobody mentioned the Oscar for best animation :o. I just wanted to say The Adventures of Tintin didn't even get nominated which is very surprising because it won the Golden Globe recently for the best animated feature.

Fair comment, James, maybe my anger over Drive’s lack of nominations got the better of me. I politely retract my statement…for now, until at least I have seen more of last year’s films to judge better. :)

I completely agree with you on this statement.

All the best

This one shocked me just as much as Brooks getting blown off for "Drive".
Not too often a Golden Globe winner doesn't even get an Oscar nomination.

The animation category is all DreamWorks and foreign entries.
Disney/Pixar got snubbed for Cars 2 and rightfully so.
A Cat in Paris I couldn't get through. Chico & Rita looks good though.

Outside of that, the Academy went with the boxoffice champs, sans Cars 2. Yawn.
They could've given the Big Mouse a little love for Gnomeo & Juliet.
Heck, then you could've added another original song to the pathetic list of two!
The brothers Warner got the middle finger for Happy Feet Two.

Why the DreamWorks orgy, when you could've nominated WINNIE THE POOH!

whichever films gets picture of the year tends to get best director as well. since i highly doubt tree of life will get best picture, i doubt malick will be going home with anything either. then again, its a weak year so they might go against tradition. i honestly think The Artist will get best picture, yet it's hard to imagine that Hazanavicius will win best director.

We Need to Talk About (why) Kevin (didn't make the list). Lame joke. Ever lamer this fantastic film was hung out to dry. Horrific that Tilda Swinton didn't get a nod.

Seeing as there were a couple of crowd pleaders in there, I'm disappointed Rise of the Planet of the Apes didn't find itself nestled among them.

Andrew, i agree.

The film was hard work and i felt it didn't deliver a flowing transition throughout, i.e. standard movement, but i can't fault her performance, or its depth. Not my favourite film but it was haunting and well crafted. You only have to see the first scene with the tomatoes and then relate the loss of freedom within travel, to see the depth.

Despite what others say i feel this year is light on the great films, and will be seen that way going forward.

MS was outstanding in the Iron lady. To me a truly great performance and she deserves her nod. Watch and learn.

Each to their own!

Nothing like awards to bring out the differences.

Cheers everyone.

I'm disappointed Melancholia hasn't gotten any recognition but Lars has never done himself any favours in the PR department so no real shock there.

Like everyone else I'm surprised Drive has been overlooked despite my mixed feelings towards it.

We Need To Talk About Kevin should have gotten a couple of nominations too, namely direction and Actress in a leading role.
