I just came across the opening credits to 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' (Fincher's version) and I thought it was outstanding. I actually seen the film in the cinema and arrived foolishly late, but to miss this was a catastrophe.

Any other particular favourite title designs?
Another of mine is 'Catch Me If You Can'

Beyond a doubt my favourite opening of any movie (in this case it's not titles but the opening scene) is this one from Dancer in the Dark.   I think it puts you in exactly the right head for understanding the main character.

A rather poetic opening there. I need to include the film in my need to see list- I am a fan of Von Trier and will have a look at Melancholia tomorrow.

The first half of the movie is on the boring side of rather slow but the last half is entertaining in a maudlin sort of way.   Not his best movie but worth at least one watch if you like Von Trier and/or Björk.

Mr Fincher and his contemporaries owe a huge debt of gratitude to one man...

Saul Bass.

He revolutionized the way the most daring filmmakers opened their films.
In fact, the title sequence of "Catch Me If You Can" is a smoochy love letter to Saul Bass.

Saul Bass and Maurice Binder are both excellent- I always like to see how graphic designs can be revolutionised via technology but I always enjoyed the hand drawn animation of the heydays. The Pink Panther brings to mind.

I always thought the opening title sequence of Dawn of the Dead(2004) was one of the most effective I've ever seen.  Can't go wrong with Johnny Cash.
