Though it’s been happening forever in Hollywood, there seems to be a lot of remakes of movies recently. Whether it’s a remake of a foreign film or just a revamped version of an older movie, they seem to be coming thick and fast.

I say this with the Total Recall remake due out later this year.

I thought it would be nice to hear people’s thoughts on their favourite and worst remake.

Obviously I am happy to start.

Fave: Dawn of The Dead (2004)

Worst: Planet of the Apes (2001) Though this isn’t a bad stand alone movie IMO, I absolutely loved the original and nothing could have topped it and it’s for that reason it’s here.

Also a quick mention for The Wicker Man (2006) just terrible. :)

Are we talking all time or the new wave of them?

See, I'm tempted to say "The Thing" but it's really not a remake of the movie, but of the short story.

To make sure there's no logical flaws, I go with "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1978).

Worst...? I don't know. I don't watch many movies I don't think I'll enjoy. I'll get back to you on that one.

The bests for me have already been mentioned.... The Fly, The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers.  All amazing.

For worst, I would suggest A Nightmare on Elm Street.  So, so misguided.

My favorite is Dawn of the Dead and the worst I've seen would probably be One Missed Call. What angers me is when films like Troll Hunter and Let the Right One In, get remade not long after the originals because apparently we're too lazy to read subtitles.

Of the upcoming remakes, the one I'm most curious about is RoboCop. It's one of my favourite films.

Best:

The Fly (beat me to it, James)
A Fistful of Dollars
Cape Fear
A Woman, a Gun, and a Noodle Shop

Worst:

Bedazzled
Rollerball
The Wicker Man
Black Xmas/pretty much any 2000s remake of a Western horror film

Most disappointing:

The Pink Panther, which is the highest grossing of all the Panther films.  A shame!

Most interesting upcoming:

Spike Lee's Oldboy, if it gets off the ground (note that I said "most interesting," not "most likely good"!)

Not sure about the best but The Departed is up there.

Worst has to be The Last Airbender, even though it was an adaption, it still sucked. Worst movie of all time.

Best: Diabolique w/Chazz Palminteri

Worst: King Kong 1976

I was quite surprised by this, I never knew RoboCop was going through a remake. I find it very difficult to think they could outdo the original which I also liked but have to say that my interest is piqued and I’m curious to see what they do with the franchise now.

Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what they do with it. Good choice of director. From what I've read, he looks to be exploring the process of man becoming cyborg and the loss of humanity. Not sure how that'll lend itself to the original, but it's actually quite compelling. Padilha's quite wise to avoid trying to emulate Verhoeven's satirical masterpiece. Must admit I'm looking forward to seeing Robo back on screen.

Go Robo.

Worst remake in history, hands down, "Double Indemnity 1973" version.    Not too much thought or care went into it.  The dialogue was so corny, it was painful to listen too.  No chemistry between the central characters, or any of them.  It was just horrible.

I think "Get Carter" (2000) with Sly Stallone might be close to that title as well. ;D

I recently came across this and I LOVE IT! I feel like the old Star Trek has become a living spirit entity. They've captured the magic ingredient of the old series.
