Well Done Kevin, top work.

Jeez, Dena. I'll get you for this.

But thanks. Hopefully it can make the next leap. There's a long line of SS people who read this and gave notes, so many thanks. Ryan, Janet, Gary, Brett, Dena, Greg, Phil W, Jeff, James. Hope I didn't forget anyone.  Ryan did not like the concept at all, but he actually gave me the most helpful notes by far when it came to addressing the story.

And...not one person liked it. But hopefully all of their thoughts went into eventually making a better draft. So again, thanks a ton.

And in case people don't know, Phil Whitcroft has made the finals with his script Dumb Animals. This is not his first trip to the rodeo!

Congrats Kevin!

...I did not get to read it...

Btw, Breanne made it too!! Goo SS'ers!!

Breanne's a regular there. She has her own seat at the Nicholl's bar and everyone knows her name! Good luck Breanne and Phil. I don't think too many SS people entered.

Well done Kevin and all SS'ers

Keep us updated.

That's FANTASTIC news Kevin!

Is your script up here?

Breanne & Phil made it to?

Wow! A lot to look forward to here. When is the next round announced?

Gongrats Kevin! :-)

Enjoy the ride.

Well done, Kev.  Really chuffed for you.

Thanks Gabe, Greg, Alfy. The script is called Dark Messiah. Not posted here. It has its flaws, but shows that even flawed scripts have a chance. Got lucky with a reader or two. It's not a script likely to ever be produced. Very large budget. Happy to send anyone a copy if they're curious about it.

Congratulations Kevin! And congrats to Phil Whitcroft, too! And congrats to anyone else who advanced that I’m not aware of yet. :)

Congrats Kevin! Happy for you. Don't know which script it is though.

Philip's short Dumb Animals was entered in an OWC here on the site. It was pretty good - just read the comments there. The feature must be based on that one.
Congrats Philip!

Way to go, big fella!

I think I read a early draft of that script. It was a pretty full on concept.

Hope you go all the way mate

Thanks everyone. Congratulations to Breanne and Kev.

I'd never have devised the concept if it hadn't been for the OWC. The comments that I got here on the short version of my entry encouraged and helped me as I developed the feature.

Congrats, Kev!

Keep on keeping on!
Is this the alt ChiTown script?
Always lovely to hear the lovely Breanne's scripts making the grade too! ;D

Is there a quarterfinalists list or do they just send out e-mails?
What's the percentage/number that make it to the quarters?

Regards,
E.D.

368 out of 7100. Then 110 to 120 for the semis. Obviously it's all nice, but doesn't mean much unless you make the finals.

Same script, Brett, though much changed. Thanks for reading the first draft, which was a much tougher read than what I ultimately entered. Not only because it was an early draft, but because I was a pretty lousy writer. My skill has improved somewhat. Surprisingly, the learning curve is still steep, though, as I feel I've learned a lot even since I entered the contest. I'm keeping on.

Congrats to Breanne and Phil. :)

A massive congrats to my buddy, Kev. Excellent to hear this news and I hope all of you more success in moving onto the next stage. :)

Kinda gutted I didn't get to read it though, Kev.

Top stuff.

Got a question for you quarter finalists and maybe you Kevin especially. You said no one liked your story, but still you advanced to the next round. Do you feel that story or writing/grammar/punctuation advanced your script?
Posted by: leitskev, August 1st, 2012, 8:59pm; Reply: 25
Steve, thanks, and you're welcome to read any time. I just decided against posting my features online, except the ones I have posted already. If this one doesn't win, and odds are overwhelmingly against it, I already have ideas for a rewrite. Maybe you'll be willing to read the new draft?

More than willing, Kev. :)

But don't shoot down your chances just yet. You never know? ;D

Keep us updated, mate.

I'd like to chime in and say I don't think that's why Kev's script advanced.
Always dug the concept of Messiah, I just didn't care for the execution.
I feel it's the kind of script that does well in Nicholls as well.
And I'm sure Kev's progressed his craft since then too! ;D

Kevin's writing is cream of the crop if you ask me. You can open up even his first script ever written and see a STORY. If the story is there, some minor things like formatting and silly errors can be overlooked.

That being said, he is probably the hardest worker I know at the craft. He spends hours literally writing, researching and READING pro scripts....and still has time to help those in need(like myself) :)

We all have growing to do, but in my honest opinion, Kev's writing has mad leaps and bounds.

The script and the story def changed a lot, Brett, several times. Every time I've reached a point where I think I've at least got the writing part of this field down, a month later I find myself looking back and wondering how I thought that. The curve is still steep. I looked at the draft this morning that I entered the contest with and I cringed a little, wished I could give them another draft. There are things I'd do different now than from a couple months ago. I'm still like the kid taking off the training wheels.

Thanks, Dena. She knows I screw up, try harder, repeat cycle.

Utterly thrilled for all you clowns.

Fingers crossed for a 3-way SS tie.
Posted by: leitskev, August 31st, 2012, 12:31pm; Reply: 33
No tie. But one member of the SS community is in the semi's, which is a huge accomplishment!

Phil Whitcroft, I believe with his script Dumb Animals. No one is more deserving than Phil, a true gentleman and a real script craftsman.

So give him some SS karma, he's one step away from a free trip to LA!

Wow, major props to Phil!
Dumb Animals was written before I joined the site.
But I've downloaded and eager to check it out!
Here's the 2010 OWC if anyone else is interested.

I've read the feature, but not the short. Cool that it came from OWC. You never know where those suckers end up! It's going to get a lot of looks by producers now.

I didn't remember Dumb Animals, but I see from the thread that I liked it.  Well done to Mr. Whitcroft.  Great to see a script borne of the OWC makes its way to the Nicholls semis.

See you took everyone's advice about changing the title.  ;D

Congratulations Philip!!  Nice going!!! And I agree, very cool that it originated as a OWC script!! 8)

Yeah, two things;

Well done Philip, v cool that an OWC emerged into something and...

Well done kevin. I'm sure you wanted to go to the next step but hey, kudos, damn impressed with what you did.

Onwards and upwards.

I wasn't going to enter and decided the day before the deadline. So I did a total rewrite. And I made some mistakes. Now I have time to fix them up. And I'll try to come up with another script or 2. You can enter 3.

This is the only contest I have any interest in. There are a lot of behind the scenes games that go on with other contests. Nicholl's seems honest and fairly run. Each script gets at least 2 reads.

Congratulations Phil -- I wish you well.  This is a prestigious contest... I couldn't enter this year, so I focused on Page and Shriek -- But I'll certainly have my Drama ready to go by Feb 2013.

FANTASTIC JOB!!!

What a great contest season it's been.

I'm hoping someone gets the BLUE RIBBON from here ;-)

Best of luck guys!!!

Congrats Phil! Seems like there's a few people from this site that are leaving their mark in the screenwriting business. It truly is a great thing to see.

All the best :)

Thanks for your support. I didn't make the finals. Now I'll get my logline and synopsis into shape and hope that it being a Science Fiction script works in my favor when the results are published.
Posted by: leitskev, September 27th, 2012, 9:25am; Reply: 44
Phil, sorry to hear that. That has to be a stinging disappointment.

But you've now had studio level producers read your work. That's big!  Hopefully it gets picked up!

Sorry to hear you didn't make the finals, Phil, but making the semifinals is a big deal. I hope you're not waiting for the results to be made public before you start trying to take advantage of it.

In any event, I hope November brings you a lot of interest. Wish you the best with it. :)
