Low-budget films tend to be extremely under rated these days. In the modern day, almost anyone has access to the resources required to make their own independent film. How great is that?!

So I thought I'd take it to SS, to ask a quick question. Can you give any examples of low-budget films that really surprised you when you found out the real budget.

Here's one of my favourites. Australian film 'The Castle.' Nothing beats the the Australian sense of humour. The film was made on a small budget of 19,000 Australian Dollars. Not sure if that falls under the 'low-budget' heading...? Anyway, it's still worth the watch.

Dan,

I don't think the American's in the audience will really get the Castle - funny as it is.   Just like they didn't get Kath and Kim.

Yeah I thought that might be the case. The video I posted doesn't really do it much justice anyway. There's a lot of other funny moments in the film.

Lol, I love The Castle!

I'll mention two movies, not indie but I was surprised how well they were shot with a moderately low budget.

Atonement was shot on 30 million dollars and they still managed to film this scene without any special effects.

Like what?

District 9 is another mind blowing movie. I literally screamed WTF when I discovered it was filmed on 30 million dollars.

That video is pretty priceless, my friend. Good call.

Awesome! I love it! Probably the strongest point of the entire film (apart from the laughs) are the characters. It's impossible to hate them.

Hope you enjoy :)

30 million dollars for each of those?! Shit...

Well, I’m sure we all have different ideas of what low-budget is, but I always liked the original Saw movie which was a cracking little horror/thriller and set-up a profitable franchise even if all the sequels couldn’t come close to the that first one.

Or how about the movie Primer which I believe was made on a really small budget, certainly worth checking out.

Hey Dan!

Thanks a ton for the recommend!
I really enjoyed the film and the whole tone.
It was one joke spread nicely over 80 minutes.
The nice white trash premise kept me chuckling.
The family's blissful ignorance is endearing.

The land deal subplot slowed the middle somewhat.
But it wrapped up nicely...
And OMG! Eric Bana! LOL. His mini mullet was hi-friggin-larious! ;D

Regards,
E.D.
