just breaking today.... via IMDB.com

i'll give you three guesses... but you'll only need one.....

Disney lands JJ Abrams for the no-brainer decision of the decade.

Was there really ever a doubt on this one?

the script is being penned by Oscar winner Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3, Little Miss Sunshine) with apparent input from George Lucas.

A good and - yes - obvious choice in landing Abrams in the director chair. The guy has proved he can handle big sci-fi (and small as well). Fortunately for him Lucas set the bar so outrageously low with the prequels that Abrams can pretty much film paint dry and still make it more entertaining.

George Lucas as creative consultant? Doesn't that usually mean, "Hey, George. Thanks for the input, here's a lot of money, now shut the fuck up"?

Very nice choices. I think this is the real followup that all Star War fans have been waiting for.

In this movie, the Millennium Falcon crash lands on Tatooine and the passengers can't figure out if they're dead or alive.

At least the new series stands a chance of being decent.
Mr Abrams will use his lens flares to tempt a new generation of Star Wars consumers.

Suppose it's a trade up from what George did with the sequels.
So yay, Star Wars will suck less, but is that so great?

I have to say I feel a certain affinity for Lucas' particular brand of suckiness. There's something so deeply hilarious about just how unwatchable the prequels are. It's endearing, in a way.

But of course, my heart overflows at this news. May the Great Panderer never touch Trek again. I pray.

As a die hard Star Wars fan, I could not be happier. Sure JJ has some problems with story telling. But he's not penning the script (thank god). However Abrams was the BEST thing to happen to Star Trek in years. It's exactly what the franchise needed.

If Episode 7 is going to happen, and of course it will, then I want these guys to handle the franchise. F ucking stoked.

The first of three episodes in the trilogy of trilogies!  Can't wait.
Posted by: Andrew, January 26th, 2013, 5:51pm; Reply: 9
Didn't really enjoy Star trek but the film that excites me about Abrams doing this is Regarding Henry - I'm not kidding. That was an unpolished film that never quite hit the heights it should have, but it showed a side to Abrams (he wrote it) that endeared him to me.

Btw, I see we're all calling Abrams Abrams. Is that because no one can bring themself to call the man JJ? It's kind of hard to talk seriously about a man who calls himself JJ.

Sound choice. A lot of pressure on the man now and I hope he can deliver what most think is a decent movie – there will always be haters.

I enjoyed what he did with Star Trek so looking forward to see what he can do with the Star Wars franchise.

It's a safe choice and a good choice. Am I the only one here who didnt hate the prequel trilogy?

No, George Lucas loved it as well.

Most folks that grew up with the first trilogy don't share this sentiment.
I am definitely one of them. ;D

But I imagine youngsters that hadn't been exposed to them, loved the prequels.
George said himself they were to intro a new generation to Star Wars.
They weren't made for the people already spending their cash on the series! :P

I enjoyed this article, Why JJ Abrams Being Perfect for 'Episode VII' is Terrible for Star Wars, very much. A short one that makes some good points.

Yes! This!

Someone around here called him The Great Panderer.
Your link is a much more academic way of saying just that. ;D

I for one, love anything that "JJ" touches...and for that matter, anything that anyone from LOST touches...

Lost is my single favorite TV show of all time, followed by Dallas (the 80's version).  Lost is the ONLY TV show that I watched every single episode in order, and it is the only TV show that I watched all the way through more than twice.  I used to love going to the online discussion forums atfer watching each episode to talk about our "theories" as to what was really going on on that dang island!  The ending at first didn't sit well with me, but I grew to love it.

When the series ended I felt like there was nothing else worth watching on TV (at least I felt that way for a while...The Walking Dead keeps me entertained for now). i really hope that they bring the series back at some point in the futre and maybe focus on what happened before Jacob and Smokey's mom got to the island -OR- focus on how Hugo and Ben ran the island.  There were just so many amazing characters on that show, and the plot actually made you think (unlike so much of the prediictable garbage that they throw out on TV and in the movie theaters).

I will also say that I actually liked the first three Star Wars.  Sure, they were nowhere near perfeect, but as a kid growing up in the 80s, I had been jonesing for some fresh material in the series and episodes I-!!! helped feed that appetite.  I think that "JJ" will help put out something that is at least better than episodes I-III, and that's all a real Star Wars fan can really ask for.

P.S. For anyone who hasn't seen the short funny clips between Jacob and the Smoke Monster...you HAVE to check them out...espceially the one where they talk about their mom having sea shells in her hair...LOL!

I just read something online that Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford will be in Star Wars: Episode VII.  I have to say that I am pretty excited to hear that!

Ha! Just saw this. I think it's very difficult for an English or Irishman to accept this thing of calling people by their initials. It's almost as bad as when someone inserts their middle initial in a vein attemot to intellectualise their name.

I personally enjoy most everything I've seen from JJ (there, I said it--his first name, that is). The first three seasons of LOST was some of the best TV I've ever seen. Fourth season got weird, and after that, it was chaotic. But JJ wrote the pilot and not many others if memory serves--he ex-prod'd but had his minions show-run it and write the bulk of the series. One of the best pilots I ever saw. Same for FRINGE. Okay, I didn't get ALCATRAZ, but not sure if he actually wrote any of the seasons, and I never saw FELICITY.

He was outstanding writing & producing 8-MIL and the MISSION IMPOSSIBLE installment. Haven't seen STAR TREK: INTO DARKNESS yet, but his first STAR TREK, I thought, was outstanding, and I'm a huge fan of the original series, liked most of the movies made in the 80s. Thought he gave a very well-conceived and interesting origins story and the casting was spot-on, both for resemblances to original cast members and story lines. And JJ even admitted that he was never a fan of the original ST series. He is, however, a huge STAR WARS nerd (okay, nerd in general), so I can only imagine what he'll do with the franchise and where he'll take it. But my glee is tempered by the fact that's he's not the key writer on it, and Lucas still has a say.

BREAKING

JJ Abrams has begun rewriting the script with Lawrence Kasdan...the chief co-writer of Empire Strikes Back.

this should get the fanboys fired up.

Haha! Apropos, that was also me.

I fear that, like Lucas and Spielberg before him, Kasdan's time has past. The only thing he's done since fucking up in 2003 is fuck up in 2012. And he's the talented half of the duo. Though to be fair, Abrams is a better writer than he is a director.

I love how many people are now "on board" with this film now that the trailer has debuted. If I remember correctly, you were all talking shit on Abrams just a few months ago (and by "you," I mean the general nerd population, not the members of SS). Abrams is a terrible writer but a fantastic director. I have full confidence in his abilities.

I posted a detailed analysis of the trailer and have been doing articles on leaked concept art for the past few weeks. But I was thinking as I watched the trailer for the 10th time today.

Damn. I really want to read this script.

You can see how much care and thought has been put into this already. I'm just curious how much of that comes from the screenplay and how much during pre production. Really looking forward to this.

Star Wars 7 trailer breakdown. The (Star Wars ) world according to Earl.

"We all know why we’re here.  You didn’t click this accidentally, I wasn’t paid to write this, and no part of this discussion will lead to a cure for cancer or world peace.

We’re here to geek out.  So let’s not do it half-way..."

Look forward to it, I know JJ will bring this franchise back from the dead. And there's only a little more than a year to go...

Better than I could anyways.

It's another year yet. I went for a part. Stayed in the queue for three hours, then thought 'Ooh, I'm a bit hungry. I need the loo. And half the hundreds of people of here have at least ten years on me. Ho hum, time for a burger.

Not a fan of J.J. Abrams or Star Wars but I was a fan of Star Trek and the two movies he made were pretty bad. Especially the last one which I found to be horrendous, one excuse after the other to do "cool" action scenes, most of which were highly illogical. Movie was unwatchable imo. I don't hold on too much hope for this as I think the same strategy will be applied here.
