I always look forward to these. Thanks Don, and Phil if he is helping run it.

Unless I go to the well and draw blanks...I'm in!

I'm running the show this time.

MWA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!!

I'll post the rules on Friday when I post the genre and theme and type.

Long or short, I'm in. Assuming I can come up with something, of course, but that's usually not a problem.
Posted by: wonkavite (Guest), March 6th, 2013, 8:32pm; Reply: 5
I'm in - if inspiration hits.  And I promise not to peek ahead of time.  (Like Phil ever tells me anything...!  :(   )

I decide on the genre and theme (and now, which challenge) at the last second.  And usually depends on what I've been drinking... and how much.

Whatever it is, it won't be very specific.  Don't want to have to wade through thirty romance scripts about a plumber and a minister meeting and falling in love in a stuck revolving door during the Hollywood premiere of Kung Fu Panda 3

Hopefully I'll be in.

No motels, please! ;D
Posted by: LC, March 6th, 2013, 11:23pm; Reply: 10
I'm a possible as well.  All depends on what 'he who is running it' comes up with.

I'm encouraged by the 'it won't be too specific' comment...I think. :)

My two cents:

I have no interest in anything other than a short for this. 7WC's are just too tough to read, and I don't want to write features that are not a topic of my choosing.

I am in favor of topics that are not too restrictive, and not too "out there". Yes, by doing that it means people can't just submit a short they happen to have lying around. But there's downside. Really restrictive rules inhibit creativity, so shorts can end up all being similar, or less interesting. I want to enjoy the reads.

Also, these are the only shorts I write, and I don't want to have to kill myself checking off a list. When it's no longer fun, I'd rather do my regular writing.

Just my two cents, nothing more. Thanks for running it!

I think 7WC's make you think outside the radius of your natural ideas circle. It helps you try new things which I think is beneficial to becoming a better writer.

Anyway, since we've got a ? where the number should be, I don't think this will be a one week challenge. Perhaps a 3 week or 7 week one?
Posted by: KevinLenihan, March 7th, 2013, 1:52am; Reply: 13
Mo, it's a big commitment, though. Not just in terms of writing 7 weeks on a topic you did not entirely choose, but to reading a lot of scripts that were cranked out, and therefore hard to read.

A 3WC where people wrote an act one might be more reasonable. But only if the topic is such that one might want to develop the concept. So if it were too weird or too restrictive I would not want to invest the time.
Posted by: LC, March 7th, 2013, 2:24am; Reply: 14
Gotta say I'm with Kev on this. I'll likely be in if it's a one week challenge cause it's a manageable time investment, and less consuming to read all the other entries.

Just putting it out there so 'he who is running it' can weigh the general consensus.

Plus, surely another 7WC or similar can be done in between, like before. Anyway, it's all speculation at this point. Roll on Friday, curious to say the least.
Posted by: Reef Dreamer, March 7th, 2013, 2:31am; Reply: 15
Why the ? rather than one, me thinks.

I did I note there was once a two week challenge!

Looking forward to seeing what this is.
Posted by: Steex, March 7th, 2013, 4:20am; Reply: 16
I actually think a 2WC might be kinda cool.
A little different.
Maybe it would give some of the people that would like to join in, but
are a little resticted at the moment, some time to put something together.

If we're taking votes,
mine is for a 2 week.

But either way,
I'm down!

If we go OWC and the genre's groovy, I'll swing for the cheap seats.
Zero time for me to do a 7WC. Work. Work. Work.
Got enough feature plates spinning, consult/collab projects too.
But I'd take a stab at a short! ;D

I see no reason why there can't be a usual OWC and then have a 7WC after?

But it's not me that organizes it. There is probably a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes.

We're not taking votes.  The concept behind these challenges is what if a filmmaker needed a script, with certain parameters, in a short period of time.  Could you do it?

It's all part of the game.

It's not just a matter of 'could you do it'. It's a matter of does one want to do it. We all have other stuff we are working on. People are merely relating what will make them want to participate or not. You may not be taking votes, but that kind of information might be helpful.
Posted by: Dreamscale (Guest), March 7th, 2013, 10:56am; Reply: 22
OK, since we are taking votes, my vote is for a standard OWC involving a hairless Protag and a very hairy Antag.

I'm hoping that this challenge requires us to somehow incorporate cheetah warthogs.
Posted by: DarrenJamesSeeley, March 7th, 2013, 11:39am; Reply: 24
It depends on several things for me.
If it's a 7WC it's less likely.

Word-up to some of you newer guys -- you are wasting your breath suggesting things to Phil when he is in the driver's seat.

Whatever you suggest is automatically scratched off his list.

Unless he already wants to do it, of course -- but in that case your opinion is still rendered meaningless -- which is just the way he likes it.

Place your comment there in a different context, bert, and it's fodder for the mooted x-rated OWC!

XWC? What's this mean...x-rated one week challenge.  Write a porn movie with a believable story that doesn't include a plumber or cable guy?

As I said to buddy Jeff, maybe the X stands for the Roman numeral ten.

Where that leads I have no basic idea, lol. Will have to wait and see

"X" could mean a 10wk challenge, (X as in roman numeral)
Furthermore, the scripts must have either ancient Romans or Greeks in them.
Okay I'm guessing.

but with a xxx, we'd have 100, right?

If the OWC's secret is "X", as Stevie, that fucking Aussie and a few others noted...maybe it has to do with 10.

Maybe, it's a modern take on the Blake Edwards' "10".  YES!!!!!   ;D  Thank you, Phil...perfect idea!!!

"X" is also a shortened form for not only "Crossing" but also for Christ.  It's also used in "X" marks the spot, and used to lead off a badly spelled "Xtra."  So maybe we have an xtra long short where you have to incorporate Christ criss-crossing the Middle East to find out who stole his stupid grail.

Arrh, that's half the fun, even if completely useless to do.

Having seen the three week OWC a while ago, with the Star Trek theme, I really hope it doesn't go down that route. Hope you keep it simple and short.

Otherwise I will dial in with great interest tomorrow morning to see what it's all about.

The OWC will be announced in about 4hrs and I find this thread near the bottom of the portal???

What's up people? Where's the excitement? The arguments? The threats of bodily harm to Phil if he comes up with something crummy? C'mon people!!
Posted by: Dreamscale (Guest), March 8th, 2013, 5:29pm; Reply: 45
If Phil comes up with something crummy, I'm going to permanently block him like he has done to me.  Can you imagine how much he'd hate that?   ;D ;D ;D

I'm excited but with Phil in charge, my expectations are diminished.   8) 8)

I'll probably try for this one depending on how my Poli-Sci paper goes this weekend...
