Interesting little movie. Basically a fun, good-natured home invasion flick with a kickass protagonist and the curious distinction of being unpredictable. The low-budget digital is at times distractingly ugly, and the movie does have the inevitable scenes of shrill, shrieking women with lines like "Why?!" and "We're all going to die!!" shot in irritatingly incoherent handheld. Once we settle into the ride and figure out how the movie's gonna shape up, though, it's a darn good time with enough gore for all, I'd say. And there are, of course, some unnecessarily topless women thrown in the mix, though there's an interesting and obviously intentional lack of sexiness to some of the nudity.

There's quite a lot of black humour in the movie, and for the most part it lands pretty well. I could have done with a little more, actually.

There are jump scares, and they are obnoxious and un-earned.

The cast is fun. Lots of indie directors, some Glass Eye Pix folk, and even the great Barbara Crampton, though she's disappointingly underused. The self-reflexive humour of moments like Joe Swanberg telling Ti West that commercials are the most worthwhile type of filmmaking is a bonus for those in the know. The wonderful Amy Seimetz was also a nice surprise, though she too is underused (see Upstream Color immediately!!).

Anyway, won't please all but exactly the sort of thing that should be making it to the theatre screens more often. And not scary at all, just fun.

So the critics loved the s hit out of this movie. As for me, I was a little disappointed (especially after reading all of the hype). However I still had a pretty good time.

Really enjoyed the cinematography and the 80's-esque soundtrack. Very throwback.

Was a bit iffy on the plot. Kind of flimsy in my opinion.

The acting sucked a ss. Seriously, I couldnt wait for the father to get the axe.

Overall, this film is yet another example of American filmmaking falling behind. If you watch any international horror, then you've seen all of this before. Sure, it might shock your friends who aren't movie buffs, but that's it. Reminded me of the Evil Dead remake.

Watch this and then check out Inside. A much nastier home invasion movie IMO.

Haven't seen this yet, but it really bombed at the NABO.  OPened in 7th place and, as far as I know, has the lowest grossing openign weekend of all horror releases so far this year.

Critics loved it indeed, but it doesn't appear that audiences have much interest.

I hope to see it this week.

I don't really know why the critics liked it. Because there are like five minutes of relatively witty family-dynamics comedy, maybe? Or maybe they thought the female characters got better treatment than in the average horror flick. Weird to see a positive consensus on this one, though. I find that solid, unique flicks like this are usually down in the 60% range on Rotten Tomatoes, with Spring Breakers and the like.

Inside was definitely a lot nastier, but I liked this more. I like some black humour with my home invasions -- Mother's Day was another recent winner, I thought. I would count this as a strong showing for American film, actually. I like these dudes in general though, Autoerotic and whatnot.

This was brilliantly enjoyable. There are obvious moments where you feel more cringe than watching The Office (UK), but it manages to pull you through. This is a movie made by people who love movies and it's infectious. A ride to be experienced.

Well, I had bene looking very forward to seeing this and finally got the Blu Ray last night.

Did it live up to my expectations?  Did it merit all the positive word of mouth and reviews or maybe more like the BO returns showed?

Sadly, it's the latter and I have to say I was very underwhelmed and unimpressed.

Story was extremely weak at best.  Writing for me was also weak.  Acting was borderline terrible for pretty much everyone involved, saved our fiery Protag, Sharni Vinson.  ANd the dialogue?  Really?  This is black comedy or wink wink horror?  Not for this kid.

Biggest isue was a complete lack of setup, which threw all the charcters into a mishmash of who's who.  No one remotely seemd like they were related here or even knew each other.

Character's actions and reactions were also borderline comical, but not in a purposeful way.  LIke the Mom giong upstairs by heself and taking a nap?  Really?  Many otehr examples of what some may call purposeful homage to dumbass horror movies through time, but to me, it comes off as poor writing.

Now, one of the few areas this film works in, is its mean spirited attitude and no holds barred gore and violence.  I liked it and was impressed.

Overall, though, sadly, this was nowhere what i was hoping for and although it may fair slightly better than the usual crap we'r force fed, it ain't by much.

I really don't understand why this movie got the hype that it did. It didn't offer anything original, it was pretty much a standard horror film. "Been there, done that". Had a lame twist and an all too familiar setting.

I too was underwhelmed. I was looking forward to the movie, hearing good stuff about it. In the end the movie looked cheap and it felt cheap.

If the acting wasn't so actrocious and flat, apart from Varni, I would have liked this a lot more.  

I watched this the other night after I'd heard rather good things about it.

It started quite well but went downhill from there. The lead actress was about the only one that came out of this without making a fool of herself. Some of the acting was awful. No, quite a lot of it was. Truly bloody awful, now I think about it.

The trap on the front door, the 'oh, I'll just climb in through the broken window of the house' business. Christ. Some good ideas and efforts squandered, in my humble.
