Dustin Bowcott vs. Silverback.

Dropbox links submitted by tonight.  Or say 12 hours from now.

Topic, genre: Anything goes.  (unless otherwise specified)

Page length 1-5 pages. (unless otherwise specified)

Not quite how it works. First you need someone you trust to post the links. Otherwise it will not be anonymous, and what's the point.

Second, you need someone to give you a logline or a topic. Otherwise you might send in some old short.

As far as 12hrs, the problem is this: we don't want to read crap. The shorter the time given, the greater the likelihood of crap. 48 hrs is more reasonable.

There ain't gonna be any anonymity, Kevin.   Boycott's got a very distinct writing style as do I.  Let's not pretend we're not gonna know who wrote what.

And I don't know 'bout you, but I can bang out a script in a day.  A good script.

I have no idea what either one of you guys' style is. I agree with Kevin except for there should be a short time limit. I remember when a director came by here and wanted a short for a hospital he had available to him for two days. He needed a script in 3 hours. I wrote one, they ended up not shooting anything, but someone else shot mine. Turned out great.  :)

Many of us have never read your work, so we won't know your style at all. I've only read a little of Dustin's work, not enough that I would recognize his voice. Anonymous is always best.

And you know, I've been involved in a lot of sports leagues in my day, including bar sports such as pool and darts. The guys that talk a lot of smack are always pretty good...but never really good. That's been my experience. They beat up on the lower level players, but they always fall to the really good ones.

Good luck, though.

Has to be anonymous so the voting doesn't get swayed one way or another.

Are we really gonna pretend we don't know each others style?  Really?   Dustin's style is wordy and overwritten.  My style is sparse and awesome.  ;)

Screw the possibility of swayed voting.  We all know it's gonna be swayed because my script will clearly be better.

C'mon Dustin, let's go!

You'll be surprised. I can write in any genre and change my style to suit. I'll point you to this thread and post number 23

http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-Scifi/m-1366140294/s-15/

I've written a feature in 8 days and 10 page shorts are done in a day, a working day which is 6 hours. That makes 3 hours for a 5 page short easily manageable. To do it on the spot and make a cohesive, non-cliched story is certainly a challenge. After reading your squid-in-the-brain idea, I'm not in the least bit intimidated by your sparse, underwritten style.

Agree - it used to be anonimous and it better be. And just like Kevin say - someone has to post the links for you.
It's more fun this way.

You're not even on my radar, reaper. You fly too low.

It has to be anonymous. the fact that people can spot my style is neither here nor there. I've clearly lost the popularity vote. That always happens when I deal with idiots. I have no patience for them, you see.

I have four children and two dogs, I've also got a business to run that puts food on the table. You may be able to rush about doing whatever you want, but I have to organise things.

I'm also not happy with the rules yet. So calm the fuck down.

We forgive you, kevcott.

All I said was I can't read your scripts because I get frustrated with character and story.

If Silverback was just the same, I'd say it about both of you, but I haven't read much of his stuff yet... if anything at all.

So you basically called me an idiot for not being able to slog through your features.

That's great... but it's also not my fault.  I find your writing boring, big deal.  No reason to shit your G-string and start calling people names.

That's not all you said... you said that I reminded you of Norman Scribbler. It was obviously meant to be derogatory. You denying it just shows how much of a coward you are.

Dustin I have a genuine question for you. I am not attacking you or argument with you, since this is not my fight.

My question is: if you feel as if people here are idiots which is something you have no patience for and that you have established to yourself that you're a true writer, then why are you on this forum? Especially when you sound so busy.

I am not saying that you should leave. I find these quarrels entertaining and look forward to the showdown. I am just curious.

You guys have got to be kidding. I want each of you (as part of your challenge) to honestly re-read each post that you have made in this thread and in the Ray W thread. Can you read your own posts and not be disgusted at yourselves?

My question is... why is your comprehension so bad that you would read that I called the entire forum, idiots?

There are idiots everywhere. It is my having no patience for them that leads to pointless arguments. There... reiterated. I cannot put it any simpler than that.

And I have established to myself that I am a true writer... what does that mean?

I just remember in another thread you said that if somebody got shaken off their dream of being a writer by negative feedback, then they weren't a true writer to begin with.

And actually you said that you obviously lost the popularity vote. Why? Because there's two people here (other than Silverback) that said something unfavorable about you? Usually popularity means reputation to a larger group of people. And then right after you said the idiots thing.

So, yeah...fuck yourself.

Only people that are posting. Doesn't matter if it's two or ten. That's the popular opinion on display to me.

A real writer cannot be told they are not a writer. I am a writer and have been one since I could write.

Okay there, you've clarified and answered my question. But don't go insulting my comprehension skills, when logically what I inferred from your sentence (from a linguistic standpoint) was valid.

We still haven't chosen the critera for the challenge.

My vote:  A romantic comedy about two gay Nazi guards set in Dachau Concentration camp, circa 1941.

That should be easy enough to write.

I know you were joking...but this would actually be pretty interesting.

And funny enough, if you got like Steve Zaillian or someone on it, it would probably be nominated for an Oscar  ::)

Hold yer horses, Boycott.  I'm not writing about gay nazis.  Big waste of time.  I'd rather write something that actually has the chance of getting produced.  I just PM'd you.

My suggestion would be Thanksgiving or Christmas as the topic, 3-5 pager, genre -drama.

You'll have 3 days to knock it out and we'll submit it via dropbox.
Posted by: DustinBowcot (Guest), October 31st, 2013, 3:35pm; Reply: 32
I'm writing a feature right now and two features in the wings that I'm writing for producers. Not to mention two shorts that are also being produced that I'm needed for rewrites on. Despite my overly worded style, I seem to have a few fans of my work.

3 hours and I will write a 5-page producible short. On any subject given by a third party.

Theme: Thanksgiving or X-mas.

Genre: Drama.

I've got nothing written, but I've got an idea.  I'm going for it.

We'll dropbox the links here in 24 hours.

How are you at a disadvantage?  Because you think I've already written something?   Nope.  I fight fair.

Here's what I'll do for ya.  You pick the topic.  Ready, set, go.
Posted by: DustinBowcot (Guest), October 31st, 2013, 3:49pm; Reply: 36
I'll go with the twenty-four hour thing. A whole day is plenty of time. Parameters have to be set by a third party at a specified time though. Only way this can work.

Dustin, if I may call you that --they don't much care for me either.   We're on the same playing field.   Now stop stalling.  Pick a topic.

Don's gonna shut this thing down if we keep going back and forth.  Better to keep it low profile.

Ha - yeah right.

I don't care when you write or submit yours.  48 hours?  72 hours?   I'm ready to write now.  So pick a topic.

Should really be a holiday-based theme, but whatever.

I'll have mine done by tonight, then just wait till yours is done to submit it.

Pick a topic or three random words.

I'm not ready to write now. I've been writing all day. I actually write... a lot. The twenty-four hours can start tomorrow evening around 7pm my time. If you're on East coast then I think that may make you around 5 hours behind me? I get confused with daylight saving. I know Cali is 8 hours back. Either way... 7pm for me is great for you.

What fresh hell is this?

Seriously, guys.  This is the second time I have to go in and clear out a thread because of fucking juvenile name calling.  If I have to keep doing this, I will fucking ban everyone involved and delete your fucking scripts from the site and you can take this shit over to another screenwriting website.

I hate coming back to stuff like this.  I am so on board with what Don has posted above, and the self-aggrandizement on display here is about as distasteful as it gets.

Fine.

Your topic is an internet feud gone bad.  Take it or leave it.  You want to set it during the holidays, knock yourself out.

Any more name calling or d*ck-swinging and this thread gets locked up just as tight as the last one.

Behave and you can post it here or start another thread.

Anonymous submission is too much of a pain for me or Don to get involved, so if you do not want to do it out in the open, then don't.

Hahah! If ever there were two scripts totally, absolutely undeserving of being read by anyone, it is the two scripts that will arise from this "contest." Why don't you guys do something useful with your time and have a contest for who can give the best and most useful criticism on one of the new members' features?
