When writing we all know how hard it is to tug on the heartstrings.  Is there a particular movie scene that gets you teary-eyed?  It'd be nice if you could find it on Youtube and post it here.

This one gets me every time.  :'(

If this doesn't move you then you have no soul.

The final five minutes of Stand by Me always chokes me. The two lines in particular which get me are:

"As time went on, we saw less and less of Teddy and Vern, until eventually they became just two more faces in the hall..."

The sad truth of growing up is that you will lose contact with friends, friends who at one point in time were your world. Friends who you went on adventures with which you will never forget.

"I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?"

So, so true. Makes me sad just thinking about it.

I took too much X as a youth... virtually any sad (or extremely happy) scene can have me fighting back the tears.

Superman and his Dad. (1978 version)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KchxYM0WhDM

Or some other scenes, I prefer the earlier cut, Superman really had to work his way back.

Makes no sense, but as a kid it made sense.

I cried at many scenes in About Time. But for all the wrong reasons.

The cold realisation I could rented something else, anything, brought tears to my eyes. Something with Chuck Norris in it.

The fact I'd have to bring the thing back and not just chuck it out the window or down the loo.

"Drive" made me cry after I realized I lost 30 mins of my life, then I turned it off and got drunk.

I always have a bit of a sook at the end of 'Glory' and also 'Friday Night Lights' when they lose.

And Ned Beatty's love scene in 'Deliverance' never fails to make my eyes water... :X

Love scene? What do you do for a man hug?

Poor old Ned Beatty. I've never been able to look at him since without thinking about him running away in the forest with his pants round his ankles.

I cried a lot at Never Let Me Go. You should see it if you haven't. It's a great movie.

Okay I admit it. I'm a sap.

The Notebook

When eldery Allie remembers her husband Noah...only to relaspe and panic not knowing who Noah is. The anguish causes her to be sedated and him to have a stroke. Then they died together.

This scene doesn't pack its full punch without the tension of the drowning beforehand, but Harris' performance here gets me every time (SPOILERS FOR 'THE ABYSS'):

--

If there's something that makes me flat-out weep, though, it's one very small, simple line:

"So. Five-card stud, nothing wild...and the sky's the limit."

Aw. Gettin' emotional just thinking about it. Hahah.

Not really a movie but...

Hurt - preformed by Johny Cash

Gets me video or no video.

Any part of 'Watership Down'.  I watched it as a kid and remember crying my eyes out.  And to think it's a suppose to be a kids film!

I was actually close to tears when watching the superb documentary 'Senna'.

I consider myself a bit of a tough guy. But that torture  scene in Braveheart. Jesus man, every fukin time. It’s the faces in the crowd…”mercy mercy” and then Mel Gibson’s…Freeeeedom…(tear rolls down cheek) never fails.
Posted by: rendevous, March 18th, 2014, 8:08pm; Reply: 18
There's a lot of people hate Braveheart. But I'm not one of them. Even though the history is way off, they made a damn good movie. Ah, back in the day when Mel Gibson was a star.

Anyways, Mery Christmas Mr. Lawrence was always one get me sniffing. A buried Bowie and Tom Conti confronting a Japanese guard. Several scenes that make me weep.

It's quite a weird film that's strangely compelling and of the type they don't seem to make anymore. The lazy barstards.

As a lifelong Cash fan, I could not agree more with you. That video never fails to send shivers down my spine and hit me at such an emotional level.

For some reason, (not related to movies in any way) when I get into a crowd of people, or see a crowd of people together, working together on "something", I feel tearful to the point I feel I must remove myself and go away somewhere alone...

Recently, during the winter Olympics, I continually experienced this phenomenon and I must add, that as a child I had this same feeling on occasion, in movie theatres. I equate it with a paradoxical feeling of both "loneliness" and "togetherness" at the same time. ... In this regard, I think, perhaps, that strong and good movies and scenes within movies do just that:

They help to make us witness to the fact that we are all terribly and utterly alone, and yet-- by some grace of G-d or whatever you want to think, we've been given the gift of each other. Maybe... when writers find these so called "connections" they strike the proverbial nerve/nerves in us that make our spines tingle, our skins to crawl, or some kind of everlasting feeling of eternity that cannot be dissolved in the deep waters under the Titanic or the dark void in the skull of a Voldemort.

...anyways, I guess it just proves, you don't need to have a character die in order to produce sympathy, empathy, and or otherwise, the feeling of a heartfelt connection.

This thread brings up so many good questions. I think it deserves a solid place on the boards for awhile.

I wouldn't say Cry... but i definetly get that little lump once in a while

The ending of United 93 gets me every time.

Something about Bruce Willis' delivery gets me with this one too.
"An old man dies, a young woman lives. Fair trade. I love you nancy"

Atonement is the only film that does it for me. plenty of heartbreaking scenes but the ending is just brutal.

Vader's funeral.

Out of the emotional deepness of this scene, I think the shot is brilliant in any form; ending with Luke's posture in front of the fire; simply phenomenal.

Just watched MAN OF STEEL.

Holy hell, what the fuck was that? The biggest load of shit I have ever seen or just a huge rain of piss?

Either way, as a big fan of the previous Superman movies, this flick might even surpass Superman IV as the most pointless and ridiculous film in the franchise. Awful.

This film makes me cry because how frickin' terrible it is.. yet it's gonna make money and a follow up will continue in the same vein.

Crikey, at least I felt something with the other Superman movies. This fucking thing just goes so over the top it turns into a Transformers movie. Dreadful. Forced. Frickin' one of the worst films I have seen in a long time.

I'm going to add a 'girly' one and say: Steel Magnolias.  That kid should have got an academy award. Gets me everytime.

And a ditto to Eternal Sunshine. The premise is both ingenious and heartbreaking. If you've ever had your heart broken that simple idea makes a lot of sense.

Oh man… slow, lazy summer.

Anyway, digging around old threads and figure I might as well post for the sake of it. Most of you have probably caught this short film already, and I’m not sure this really constitutes as a “Scene that made you cry”, however, the local theaters like to tuck this little gem in among the numerous pre-show commercials every time I take my kids to a movie (now, I’m not saying there’s a conspiracy involved here) but, I’m pretty sure its sole purpose is so the ushers can watch me suffer an emotional catharsis… at least they’re humane enough to give me those dark 3D glasses to hide the tears.

Lily & the Snowman…

Ditto to that, Dave, that kid was amazing as was the older one in a more stoic way.

This movie has me blubbering every single time.

P.S. Oh, and Rick, I envy you your 'slow lazy Summer' - bloody freezing here... Well, cold anyway with the Antarctic breathing its icy cold all the way up to The Bite.

Why would you do this? It took me years to cope with the fact that the show is over  ;)

That entire show was heartbreaking so often: the one where Angelus comes back for the first time, the one where Willow wants to the destroy the world, once more with feeling and the one after that were all heartbreaking.

But besides Buffy, I'd say Schindler's List and the final performance of Tom Cruise in Magnolia do it for me.

The scene is The Abyss where Ed Harris' character has to watch Mary Elizabeth mastrantonio's character drown.

Then, again, back on the rig, where they're all trying to bring her back.

Actually, The Abyss is one of my favorite movies of all time and there are several scenes in which I have to hold back tears.

Hey Libby,

Right, forgot the Southern hemisphere is actually in winter at the moment… my bad. Ya, it’s been raining like crazy here, and humid as f*c… which brings the mosquitoes, oh joy!

Is “The Bite” an affectionate name Aussies give to a cold wind…? That’s cute. Around here the North wind is called “The Whore” or “The Siberian Express”, and she usually equates to -40 C. Sorry, now I’ve gone off topic, but not really… winter makes me cry. Actually, I like the change in seasons, autumn is my favorite time of year. Mid August I start counting down the days to October… OK, now I’m off topic.

Of course, being a dog owner, anytime I sense Marlee and Me is airing anywhere in the world, I run the other way.

The endings of Ordinary People and Terms of Endearment had me crying in theatres.

Even the end of Midnight Cowboy choked me up.

On Netflix, the original series Derek with Ricky Gervais has its moments.

On the other side of the coin, the film that brought the most tears of laughter would have to be Borat.
