So now that the most important sport in the world is back, and its best league is back, who are people predicting to actually go out and win it?

Top 4:

United
Chelsea
Man City
Arsenal

Champions League:

Real Madrid

The Premier League is going to be utterly wondeful this year - now that is the prediction we can all agree on.

Top 4:

Chelsea
Man City
Man United
Arsenal (or possibly Spurs)

Champions League:

I hope Barca can get back on top but I have my doubts. No team has ever won it two times in a row and Madrid will not be the first to do it (I hope). I'm thinking Chelsea might snatch it - not a fan but they have Mou and Mou has gotten himself a really good squad this season, imo. the most improved squad in Europe.

Are you doing it on this website?.. http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb.html

If so, I've got a team on there and I'll join.

Just entered a team for the first time in a few seasons.

Welcome to the fold, col!

Snipes, that was pretty disastrous, much to most of the country's enjoyment.

Two things to aid my recovery... I've dug out the Ben & Jerry's choc fudge, and I'm not switching off the Spotify random cycle of Kelly Clarkson's Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You).

And on the Fantasy front, my last minute change of Sigurdsson out for Mata & Blackett for Jones has made it a double blow for mewith a net loss of 12 pints. Bad times.
Posted by: ArtyDoubleYou, August 16th, 2014, 9:21am; Reply: 13
I've got Sigurdsson, seemed like an obvious choice, pretty cheap and takes corners and free kicks, should be a few goals and assists in him.

It's not letting me see the other players teams yet, I wanna know what I'm up against.

Also, I did quite like United as they were always the team that could stop the teams I hate from winning the league. But since Van Gaal chose United over Spurs and the United fans on the BBC website started getting very arrogant about it, I now hope he gets sacked by Christmas.
Posted by: Andrew, August 16th, 2014, 9:30am; Reply: 14
Yeah, I should've gone with instinct on Sigurdsson. I opted to go for a power midfield 4 of Sterling, Mata, Eriksen and Fabregas instead. I changed it all up to accommodate that hence the omission of Jones, and the gamble on Bojan Krkic.
Posted by: ArtyDoubleYou, August 16th, 2014, 9:41am; Reply: 15
This is my team...

GKs - Cech, Myhill
DEFs - Jagielka, Baines, Coleman, Caulker, Kompany
MIDs - Sigurdsson, Ward-Prowse, Townsend, Eriksen, Lamela
STs - Dzeko, Costa, Wickham

My biggest gambles are Costa and Lamela. I always have to have three Spurs players in my side which is why Lamela is in, but I've just got a sneaky feeling about him this year.

Love to hear your thoughts on Ashley Young at left back btw? Ashley Young on a pitch is a bad decision in my eyes anyway, but at left back? Insanity.
Posted by: Andrew, August 16th, 2014, 9:55am; Reply: 16
Good squad, that. Considered Lamela myself, but felt at 8m he wasn't worth the risk. Wouldn't be surprised for him to do big things this year, though.

I've gone:

GKs: Howard, Krul
DFs: Terry, Chambers, Blackett, Hutton, Bruce
MIDs: Fabregas, Mata, Eriksen, Sterling, Wanyama
STs: Rooney, Sturridge, Krkic

He's been decent in pre-season, but I agreed with McManaman and Scholes that he's unfortunate today 'cos he's definitely not a LB.

All United fans are saying it, but if we can get Vidal, Di Maria/Cuadrado, Benatia/Rojo it would make a huge difference. I think we need a combo of 3 from that with Vidal an asbolute must.
Posted by: ArtyDoubleYou, August 16th, 2014, 10:02am; Reply: 17
Is that Alan Hutton you have there? He likes a red card.

Agree with you about Vidal and Di Maria as I reckon they would enhance your squad. I can't see the others adding much more than just making up the numbers.

He's having something of a renaissance is Mr. Hutton. His current clean sheet is something I could do with.

Millionaires kicking each other. Or pretending to be kicked. It's been fucked since Trevor Francis. A waste.

Still plenty of time to perform one of his trademark two footed tackles, followed up with a tirade of abuse aimed at the ref for rightly showing a red.

1) Liverpool

The rest doesn't matter

Everyone thought we couldnt challenge last year. This time we have a better squad - suarez accepted - and the same manager.

Man U already lost. Arsenal were behind. You can have all the possession you like but if you don't score who cares.

Bring it.

Stevie, I'm currently reading all the United in crisis articles to enjoy our resurgence even more when it happens!

Mark, did you see that Moyes article from yesterday? That bloke is seriously deluded and still refusing to take responsibility for what was an asbolutely unmitigated disaster.

I honestly think it just shows how good Sir Alex Ferguson was to always be getting the best out of a team of average players.

I'm just hoping this year the BBC football page decide to write some articles about other teams. All it was last year was about United's bad season, got old pretty quickly.

Van Gaal out I say. Might take a punt on him being gone by Christmas, especially if he doesn't buy anyone in the next couple of weeks.

But it's a win win for you... If you win I will pay to the charity of your choice. If I win you will pay to a charity of my choice... which sadly will be Spurs ;D

Just made a couple of transfers to my fantasy team. It's cost me four points to do so, but as I feel like I'm already falling behind after a week, it's a price I'm willing to pay. Was tempted to go with the wildcard, but I'll give my squad a couple of weeks to produce the goods before I do that.

Lamela stays in, changed the game in the Europa league last night, coming off the bench and getting two assists, albeit against poor opposition. Also, this is the first time I've actually had any interest in the Europa league as now if you win you get an automatic Champions league spot. Before it was a complete hindrance, now there's something to play for.

Thought I'd throw down some predictions for this week too...

Villa v Newcastle                     2-1
Chelsea v Leicester                 3-0
Palace v West Ham                 2-1
Southampton v West Brom      1-0
Swansea v Burnley                  2-2
Everton v Arsenal                    2-3
Hull v Stoke                             1-1
Spurs v QPR                            2-0
Sunderland v United                1-2
City v Liverpool                        3-1

Just noticed this thread. Brilliant as I love football.
Big Liverpool fan and today I'm pretty happy and excited by the signing of Mario Balotelli! Will be interesting to see how he turns out.
And off work on Monday so get to watch the city game! :)

Also out of interest does this forum have its own fantasy football league? Would be a great idea if not...

There's a few Liverpool fans on here, all living on past glories and claiming this years title as theirs already. As a Spurs fan, I wish I could do either.

Never been a big fan of Balotelli myself. While he's undoubtedly a talented player, he's also a liability and seems to play when he wants. I thought NewsThump summed it up pretty well with the headline 'Liverpool to replace mentally unstable forward with mentally unstable forward'. £16million seems a decent price though.

As for the fantasy football league, one of the guys on here has a league that a few of us have joined, just scroll back through the thread to find the details. If anyone can be bothered, maybe an official simplyscripts league could be set up too so we can better keep an eye on each other.

Feel free to throw down any predictions or other random footballing thoughts, and don't be shy on giving us your top 4 predictions as well.

I'll set up the league. Love me some competition!
As for Balotelli, I agree he's a bit of a loose cannon. But if Rodgeers can get him to knuckle down, we may have a top class player on our hands and at 16m, I think it's worth a gamble.

My top 4 prediction would be: City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal in that order but this year will be tough to call as I feel Spurs, Everton and United will be challenging too. Gonna be an exciting season.

Anyway, I'll post the details for the fantasy football league a little later if anyone's interested.

Sorry, missed this one earlier. I'm of the mind that the squad is not as bad as is being gleefully reported. Without being ironic, I would take our squad over yours any day. I'd have Gerrard, Sturridge (and now maybe Balotelli) but that's it. Our defence is better than reported, but admittedly we're weak in midfield.

Those that make waves...

I'm a Liverpool fan, not impressed by the possible Balotellii signing.  Just seems a bit of a weird choice. Random, even.

Should he be a red, I'll support him but I just don't see this benefiting Liverpool. I don't rate the guy at all and think he's a bit of a dickhead.
The easy comparison is Luis Saurez, an amazing talent hounded out out by the grand English (so-called anti-racism media, yet they encourage racism in their columns -- it's OK, though, they're just innocently covering football and promoting English youth) press, so I'm sure Mario is now gonna get more of the same.

3-0 and counting.

This is why I wouldn't swap the Liverpool squad for the United squad. Last season was a flash in the pan.

Thought 3-1 was a bit harsh but again defensive problems raise their ugly head.
Johnson has become an awful footballer over the last 6 months and annoys me when he's in possession.

Anyway, that is one hell of a City side and can see them brushing many sides away this season.

That doesn't surprise me! Liverpool fans uniformly hate Mourinho! And he hates the club right back. It's very amusing. But it does mean that his qualities get ignored, and downplayed - the bloke is a top, top manager.
Posted by: ArtyDoubleYou, August 25th, 2014, 5:22pm; Reply: 63
I'd describe both City and Chelsea as efficient. City didn't play well tonight, seemed to lack a bit of pace, but they were ruthless. Chelsea are the same, but both teams have players who can turn on the style and can be great to watch.

If you want to see style though, just get down the Lane. We scored a goal that had 46 passes and all 11 players touched the ball. That's basically a dream goal. However, I'd prefer it if we do it against Liverpool on Sunday, QPR were poor. Hopefully we'll play our second team in the Europa on Thursday and be fresh for Liverpool. Can't go much worse then last season anyway.

"Bore-inho" He he, permission to use that one.

City look great, hard to look past them or Chelsea for the title but it’s still very early days...Recycled vague opinion no.1 - Check!

Are Liverpool fans really happy with the Ballotelli signing or just pretending to be, looking on the bright side, groping for positives in his game? They're a glutton for punishment that lot given the way Suarez left the club. And Ballotelli is more crazy and less talented. It all comes across as Late Transfer Window Desperation Syndrome (LTWDS) I refer you to the similar case of Old Trafford and certain micro phone haired Belgian/Moroccan this time last year!

Ballotelli has serious potential and I’ve love to see come right for Liverpool and making the league more competitive but like Torres I’ve kinda lost faith in him, my expectations are low. Is 16 million really that cheap? He’s got youth on his side but oh so headless. His performance against Costa Rica and Uruguay were bordering on shameful, very disappointing, especially after starting so promisingly against England. He went to his dream club and only stayed a couple of seasons, you have to ask why. Is he considered too good for them? He looks like a guy that’s so easy to put off, to get inside his head, then either kicks out with reckless challenges or just loses interested and doesn’t want to know about it.

Again, as a neutral, I hope I’m wrong, hafta wait and see...Recycled vague opinion no.2 – Check!

Ha ha use away.
You bring up good points about Balotelli but as a Liverpool fan I'd say I am happy with the signing.
I'm not delusional though and I know there will be problems along the way but if he can produce the goals it doesn't really matter.
Rodgers said before tonight's game that Mario knows it's basically his last chance at a big club and he's determined to prove he's the real deal so hopefully that's a sign he's now ready to knuckle down and get on with his football.
I think for 16 million, it could turn out to be an absolute steal. I hope so anyway.

And Andrew, yep as a Liverpool fan I dislike Mourinho but there is no doubting his class as a manager. It's just his negative tactics and child like behaviour with the media that really grind my gears.
Posted by: ArtyDoubleYou, August 27th, 2014, 3:10am; Reply: 66
Would be interested to hear your thoughts on last nights United performance, Andrew. 4-0 to MK Dons is pretty horrible, even though it was a second team. I would of been pretty pissed if Spurs had just got tonked by a league one side and then my manager was signing autographs afterwards. He also said he didn't expect much from the kids, which would worry me as Fergie won the title with kids.

Wonder how long it'll take for the fans to fly a banner over Old Trafford this year, or whether they're gonna show LVG a bit more respect then they did Moyes.

Di Maria's signed though so at least you've got a world class player in the team now. I think he's a great player, was awesome for Madrid last year. Is he the answer to all the problems?

4:0 to the MK dons - you've got to be kidding. Bring back moyes :-)

Re Liverpool at the nutcase...err ballotelli, my new favorite player. It's a big gamble, but, if he does work out for £16m that sounds good value. Can we tame him? Not sure about that.

Utd still had 5 internationals on against a 7th place league one side. But then again they had their "full side" on against Swansea and Sunderland lol... the mighty Burnley awaits.

Anyways looking forward to watching the Champions League draw tomorrow. .. excited all the big teams are in it.

Andrew, Scooby doo is on at the same time for all Utd fans :D

Let's get a few things straight:

1) A shambolic performance, but credit to MK Dons - they played well and deserved to win.
2) Moyes would've been gone by the end of January (at the very latest) at any other major club.
3) He was given plenty time, and the supporters were fully supportive. The minority flew that banner; he was given rapturous applause that day when he strode out. The fans were first class.
4) He would've been booed at clubs like Chelsea, City, Spurs, Arsenal and given hell in a way he never was at United.
5) The only other club that can match United's fans is the only other English club that truly stands on the international stage with us, and that's Liverpool (as much as I hate them). That said, they've not got a leg to stand on with criticising us on Moyes after the Hodgson debacle. The natives were restless far sooner and made life for Hodge a lot more uncomfortable.
6) van Gaal is the right man for the job.
7) Di Maria is definitely not the answer to the current issues, but the transfer window is still open. It's looking very likely that Mr. Vidal will be joining us shortly. An additional defender and the squad has a totally different complexion.

Proper United fans know that it's a tough time, but we stand by our team. Personally, in a perverse way, I enjoy seeing everyone else get their knickers in a twist and throwing around the gags after years of seeing us win the lot, because when we rise back to where we belong, it'll be that much sweeter.

You're right Andrew though we despised Hodgson especially when he started to slaughter the fans for not supporting him... not the smartest thing to do.

I disagree with Spurs being on that list. We pretty much always back our managers as we know Daniel Levy is the mental Bond villain behind the scenes. We booed some of the performances last season, but losing 5-0 at home to Liverpool deserves a booing, it's an unacceptable performance. It's the players who feel the wrath. Danny Rose is our Glen Johnson for example.

I remember a few years back when we were bottom of the league, 2 points after 8 games under Martin Jol. He found out during a game, as the fans did, that he was getting sacked. The whole stadium was on their feet singing the 'I love Martin Jol' song (to the theme of 'I love rock'n'roll). I'm still gutted about him getting sacked to this day.

Not many people I know wanted AVB out either, especially as it wasn't him buying the players, plus the fact fans know it takes time for that many players to gel together. Liverpool could have the same problems this year.

Like I say though, Daniel Levy is the guy most would like to see go. Personally I quite like him because he's always willing to splash his cash, he just doesn't give managers enough time to take us forward. I think we've had 10 managers in 12 years or something. The guys that joined last summer are now playing under their 3rd manager. That's insane.

As for United, if LVG doesn't finish above where you did last season, should he go too?

I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it, but there's a lot of wild 'analysis' going on right now. We're two games into the Premier League and have had a terrible performance in the League Cup. No disasters yet.

There's a tiny emergence of Moyes revisionism, which is staggering. Moyes took the champions to 7th. Do you think that would've happened under Fergie, Mourinho, LvG, Guardiola? Never. Moyes has to shoulder the blame for it as the manager. LvG is inheriting the mess that Moyes left, and that's what all this ridiculous media speculation is missing.

Agree on Levy. Uncle Fester needs to get booted out. Why your lot ever got rid of Redknapp I don't know. The current bloke is decent, though.

CL 14/15

Arsenal – Borussia
City - Bayern
Chelsea - Schalke

Anybody else got a de ja vu?

Chelsea doesn't have to worry- Schalke is trash. Chelsea would win this with the second squad. But Chelsea isn't famous over here anyway, right?

Heavy groups: B, E, F and perhaps D if Galatasaray goes shopping now.

We have to be beating Basel and Ludogorets both home and away.
I'm also confident we can give Madrid a good go at Anfield.
The trip to The Bernabau will be tough.

Delighted to be back!

Balotelli and Lallana in the squad as well.

If you can get him playing, you'll have a tidy little player on your hands. He's just lost all of his confidence. Can't be easy being the butt of the jokes all over Twitter! Still, if you see his other half, and his bank balance, I'm sure he's not too fussed.

You might have won the battle, but it's a long old war. We were awful to a man, where all your players brought their A games. Was a tough watch.

Did okay on fantasy football though, every cloud and that. Sigurdsson was a good choice as captain.

I'm not a United fan but to say they have no midfield now is...lets say, an interesting opinion. With their recent additions they will be formidable once again. Their first 11 looks very strong.

Col I don't know what your definition of first 11 is.

The mighty Man utd with the worst defender's in the premier league Johnny evans, phil jones, Chris smalling and they sign Radamel falcao . Thats like going to the hospital with a heart problem instead of fixing your heart you come out with 3 legs ! They are seriously getting the hand taken out of them with these panic buys by the players agents !

As my own team proved last season, you can have an amazing forward line but it don't mean shit if your defence is conceding.

This is Utd's tactics now :

Ha, love the diagram and yes there is definitely an element of United going for players they want rather than they need (insert witty analogy here) but with Rojo (pending work permit) and Blind they have bolstered up the defense, I can't imagine Smalling or Evans holding onto their place. Plus, I'm sure they can incorporate a link man in midfield out of what they have to provide for their top heavy team. Wayne Rooney, anyone? ;)

You should be worried that you're still only 30 points ahead of me after I've suffered two dreadful weeks ;)

I spent most of last season in the top 10k. I'm currently in the 1,600,000 region. I'm comparing my boys, Shep's Prodfoot, to the mighty Manchester United... an imminent resurgence inevitable. :)

At least supporting Ireland you probably never have your hopes built up or expect much from your team. Just scoring a goal is a bonus for you lot, but at least your boys play with some heart and desire.

England suck balls, and we shouldn't. We've got a team of heartless, gutless, millionaire playboys who have let me down for as long as I've been alive. Can't stand our national team. People keep saying about our next generation coming through but I've heard it all before. Once they've been around for a couple of seasons they lose sight of what football's all about -- playing for the love of the game.

And I probably shouldn't give fantasy football tips, but definitely wait until the international break is over before playing your wildcard. You don't want half your team to be injured when it starts back up again. That's the way I'm gonna do it anyways.
Posted by: IamGlenn, September 3rd, 2014, 10:00am; Reply: 101
Don't worry Arty, I'm not a total novice. The wildcard won't be whipped out until next Friday night/Saturday morning. I'll make sure everyone is raring to go ;)

And yeah, the Irish lads play with a bit of heart but at the moment there's a serious lack of class. Horrible to watch.
I'm one of few Irish fans that would like to see England do well too. Being a liverpool fan, half our players play in that side. But I just find it funny when the British media build them up so much and they fail so miserably everytime. It's become a routine every 2 years at a major competition.

Terrible stuff.
Posted by: Andrew, September 8th, 2014, 3:52pm; Reply: 102
So what do the English boys think of that?
Posted by: ArtyDoubleYou, September 8th, 2014, 3:59pm; Reply: 103
Dull.

My favourite thing was Wilshere stinking the place out. Wasn't so keen on seeing Welbeck score a couple of tidy goals. This is all from a Spurs perspective though, I don't really care for the England team these days.

How Fabian Delph is in our squad and starting while Huddlestone is sat at home on twitter is beyond me.

And I wish Rooney was 18 again, you know, when he was class.
Posted by: Colkurtz8, September 8th, 2014, 4:18pm; Reply: 104
A good win for ye. We had the same yesterday against Georgia. Poor performance but the result was good which will unfortunately paper over the deficiencies in the former.

Does it matter anyway in terms of these qualifiers? Platini's latest brain fart of increasing the Euros to 32 teams is every kind of wrong.
Posted by: IamGlenn, September 8th, 2014, 5:38pm; Reply: 105
Both games were dull. Englands latest poor showing and our narrow victory over Georgia. Two good results though.

However, I must say I was very impressed with Scotland against Germany. I think they deserved something from the game.
It'll be a very tough game when we come up against them.

I'll take third place, automatic qualification for the (fantasy) Champions League next season and isn't that where every club wants to be?

You must be glad to have avoided the (fantasy) Europa League, Andrew. No arduous treks to Riga or some other God abandoned eastern bloc hole to face the Latvian runners-up when you've got a key premier league clash away to Stoke on Saturday.

Bring on next season, missing it already.
