Anyone has any thoughts on this? We need to write scripts that don't offend anyone now?  :(

Boooooohhhh. Talk about caving in.

I'm not sure Sony had much of a choice here, if they'd released it and a cinema had have been bombed... they'd be blamed for not heeding the warnings.

Hopefully the group who did this will be identifed, brought to book, and the film can get a belated release.

I'm shelving my N Korea BDSM comedy though ;-)

Guess we're in the same boat, Anthony. My cop buddy comedy, "Korean Krackdown", was set to light the world on fire. You'd figure with a country that, if the reports are right, consists of a population that would make those in poverty in the U.S. rich, we shouldn't really be all that afraid of them. I'm just not seeing the logic of the major theater chains acting like a bunch of pussies because of something they read on the internet. I'm not old enough to remember a time when the U.S. wasn't full of spineless failures, but I've heard about it and this is such a far cry from the stories I've heard. It's really a damn shame. However, with all this crap about the tentpoles having to also appease China, we should have seen this kind of reaction coming a mile away.

I bet James Franco will make a documentary about this whole situation.... and that will suck like this movie.

Now they're saying the North Koreans are indeed behind the hack attack. I say, let's get Dennis Rodman to take Kim Jong Un out next time he visits...

My thoughts are there's at least two 'e's in 'interview'.

Sony's bottom fell out. Not exactly inspiring.

I'd be more annoyed, but seeing as it's Seth Rogan and James Franco in an American comedy I really could not care much less.

There are several things wrong with this situation. One, why are we going this nuts over a Seth Rogen movie? Two, why are foreign countries being allowed to infringe upon our freedom of speech in our own country? Three, where can Rogen and Goldberg go next, now that they've pushed the envelope this far? They've gotta be running out of schtick.

I'm not sure if you could consider that as infringement on freedom of speech. But if the government takes a pass on a script rather than Hollywood...

If nothing else, it is a great way to make me really want to see a movie that I had virtually no interest in prior to this clusterf**k.

Straight to On Demand/Pay Per View?

It could be the only way Sony minimizes its losses.

Smart of Sony and the theatres to shut it down. The multi-screen theatres can't afford to lose customers for all the other films on the premises. Would you take kids to see Annie across the hall from The Interview given the threat?

Hilarious.

Make a movie that's provocative for profit's sake, of course you're gonna fold like a punk the second there's trouble. They might have to try different tactics now, like, say, making something good.

As someone said, "movies usually have a time-honored tradition of waving giant middle fingers to any body that might seek to censor or silence artistic expression.  Apparently, not anymore.  Go figure....

I'm with Bert, I absolutely had no desire to see this movie, but after the threats, I would have...if the theaters had shown it.

I wonder what Sony would have done had this been a movie with a $150-200 million dollar budget.

I don't have any interest in this film anyway. The film sounds pathetic... and I partially agree with the hackers.

Wahhhhhh! Looks like my comedy feature -- which is still posted up on the boards -- about North Korean dognappers kidnapping dogs in light of the recent meat shortage won't be going ahead...

I wasn't particularly interested in this film, but after what happened, I think we should just all stay home. It's a dangerous world out there.....  :-/

Quite. I'm shutting my curtains now. No, that isn't a euphemism. At least I don't think so.

It reminds me of Borat and how Sacha Baron Cohen was banned to enter Kazahstan.

If I were the Kazahstani president I'd do the same. Have you watched Borat? It's very offensive to Kazahstani people and I'm glad he didn't choose Azerbaijan for the movie. Oh, and I remember Peneloppe Kruz saying "Movies like that create awareness..." I was like what? What kind of awareness?

So, haven't watched this one with Franco but if it's anything like Borat I don't like it in advance. I'm a huge fan of the genre though.
Posted by: DustinBowcot (Guest), December 19th, 2014, 2:35am; Reply: 20
I didn't actually realise Kazakhstan was a real place at first... although when I found out I too felt that he had crossed the line. I loved his Dictator movie... that was very clever but he didn't single anyone out... even as Borat he plays a fictional character so kinda gets away with it.

Depicting anyone that is still alive in a harsh light (aside from convicted felons) should be a no-go area for all writers. I know it is for me. When I have things to say I make things up to get the message across. I wouldn't dream of deliberately offending anyone still alive.

We already have strained relations with N Korea. Why deliberately make things worse?

I'm thinking that if a comedy with Seth Rogen and James Franco can make it worse, then it was probably never gonna get good anyway.

This isn't about N. Korea. Sony couldn't care less about what they think, nor should they. This movie couldn't possibly poke any more fun at N. Korea than we poke at our own government on a daily basis.

It's about Sony not wanting any more public leaks of internal documents and communications. Sony stock went down almost 15% during the period of leaks, and since it announced it wasn't airing the film, the leaks stopped and the stock has climbed back up, almost to the pre-leak level.

Sony didn't cave to N. Korea. It caved to shareholders and investment bankers.

This is exactly what I was talking about earlier... the Americans are terrified of thinking they lost to N Korea. This has in many American's eyes, turned into something like a war between N Korea and America. Being British and not particularly patriotic (I try, but the programming can get in the way) I find this hilarious. It's like Vietnam all over again.

Americans are "terrified" of thinking they lost to N . Korea?

Terrified? No. Just disappointed that one of our own (Sony) made it look that way.

If The Interview is ever released, you'll see how "terrified" Americans are. They'll show up in huge numbers, not because they want to see the film, but to thumb their noses at Pugsly in N. Korea.

Sony, on the other hand, is terrified. Why, we don't really know. That's the whole point.

This speaks volumes and you can't even see it... that's programming for you, I suppose.

The hackers have even been labelled terrorists... by definition, that's political. If it was business, words like terrorists wouldn't be bandied about. This is a cyber attack on US 'soil'. A kidnapping of information and then holding it to ransom with the demand that the film be dropped.

It's obviously not a US, N Korea thing... this is just the vibe I'm getting from the www in general from our American friends. All the patriotic posturing... thumbing of noses... dropping of bombs... AR 15 anyone?

Thank you for the $0.05 psychoanalysis. Have you ever spent any time in the United States?

The problem with the movie is that at the End of the Movie Kim-jonng leader is killed. Big no-no to make this ending could result in tense conflict between Korea and west.
Do you remember books SATANIC VERSES?.???  watch documentary how many people died because of that book.

But from other side. In North Korea in1990s his father starved to death 5 million people because they spend all money for developing nuclear weapons.

so my opini  is 50/50
let's God decide

You answered your first question with your second question:  because a foreign country is trying - and has succeeded - on infringing upon our freedom of speech.  A fat, slimy, pathetic, loser dictator, snaps his fingers and gets a major Hollywood movie shut down by spearheading this hacking and making threats to blow up movie theaters, just because he's a whiny, sensitive little bitch and thinks he can get whatever he wants.  That doesn't bother you?  It doesn't matter whether it was a Seth Rogan movie or not.  What happens the next time he doesn't like something that somebody's doing over here?  Does he do the same thing?  "Ah, rose Uhhmericans, day pussies, day will wissin' to me!"  What happens when another one of those jerk off dictators think they can do the same thing?  It's fucking horse shit.

Ultimately it IS Sony's decision to release the movie, but something has to be done about what happened.  Whatever it should be, I don't know, but something needs to be done.  I doubt anything will happen, though.  Obama will just make us look like a bunch of pussies by keeping his mouth shut.

Sony's terrified that more e-mails will get leaked making them look like assholes.  I just read an article in the paper that one of the e-mails trashed Denzel Washington, saying (paraphrasing) that they don't like casting black actors as leads because people overseas are racists.  Some shit like that.

You can bet your ass if The Interview does get it's release - which it should - that everyone will  show up to see it.  I already wanted to see it regardless, but yeah, millions of Americans will go see the movie anyway.  Like you said, you'll see how "terrified" Americans are. haha

What did bother me was this film. It's obviously been made to appeal to patriotic Americans. I'm not one of them. Never have been and I never will be. I happen to think that people in the US and Britain are just as brainwashed as we claim people in N Korea are. I don't see how he thinks he can get whatever he wants. He wanted this film shut down... it is.

You make it sound as though he's just stopped the Superbowl. He stopped a film made in very bad taste about him and his people. It's also a film that depicts his death. He's still alive. This film is not funny and is typical of the right wing fervour sweeping through the west lately. I'm feeling it myself too. Only, the force is strong within this one. Don't suppose that'll matter if it ever gets to war... but I won't be fighting. Unless they threaten to shoot me... then I suppose, I'll have no choice.

Love it. Perfect.

A comedian just got critically slaughtered in my country for a film they brought out where they take the piss out of a Chinaman doing exactly what you've just done here. Know what they call it? Racism.

Yeehaw. Pow, pow, pow. Why do I feel like putting on some breeches, holding them up with braces and hopping from foot to foot?

Something has been done... they've taken the stupid film down. Why it even got a green light in the first place I will never know.

I see by your emphasis that something really needs to be done... you just don't know what. How about war? Let's go kill those slanty-eyed gooks.

Why not do something yourself? How about an actual found footage movie of you going to N Korea and slapping the evil dictator? You'd be an all-American hero. Yeehaw!

Yeah, because it's not like you're terrified of it looking like you've lost a war to N Korea or anything.

Of course you can... anything but face the actual truth.

Oh yeah, they have lots more. It's clear. Not the first racist-linked email either. There was also much hilarity over Jolie and Madonna's trend for adopting black babies.

I just gave it a 1 and I haven't seen it... nor will I ever.

It's got almost 80000 votes at the moment and it's telling that now people have actually seen it, how the score is dropping. I've heard that the story is really bad. I find it sad what the world is coming to. It's like watching a bunch of giddy morons running about creating havoc and not being able to do anything about it.

Closing the blinds helps... and so does smoking copious amounts of cannabinoid laden herbal material... but, still...

I saw it. I wasn't good but it wasn't terrible. Stupid juvenile humor, I think I may have laughed once or twice. They run their stupid played out shtick. There have been worse comedies lately. Good comedies are really hard to find.

Wow, it must really suck haha.  Most reviews confirm that.

Honestly, I have no idea if I am going to watch this or not.  Weird.

I watched it Sunday night and yes, it sucked majorly. I'm not a big Seth Rogen fan, but he was okay. It was James Franco that ruined it completely with his over the top acting.
