SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Getting to know you, getting to know all about you...  /  New guy

Hello all,
I'm new to the site and to screenwriting, in general.  My name is Phil. I'm not sure of the general age range here, but I'm almost 38. I'm originally from N.J. but moved to England about 6 years ago, so it really hurts when people say to move to L.A.
I just completed my first screenplay, "Hit Yourself", two nights ago (it should be posted soon) which I started back in June.  I submitted it into Scriptapalooza (mainly for the purpose of getting cheap coverage) which afterwards, I proceeded to find a few mistakes which is just my luck.
I spent about 22 years in rock bands, writing songs, but never actually had the desire to try screenwriting. I actually only started doing it after hearing Stallone's Rocky story.  I've always wanted to get into acting, but was never in the right place, etc.  So, I started writing because I can do it from home, and its at least, a way to become involved with the field. However, after working so hard on my first screenplay, I see how much I've learned in 6 months and it wouldn't be a horrible thing to keep doing.

Thanks guys, all the same.  This seems like it should be a new fun thing for me. I've gotten sick of all my old fun things.  Haha.

Welcome to the boards, Xxoxia!  How's that pronounced, by the way?

Welcome to the boards Z-zoxia - I'm guessing that's how you pronounce it?

And yes, pie is a wonderful thing but chocolate might just beat it. :)

Hahaha, it's been a while since I've had to go over the pronunciation.  When I made up the name, I wanted to have three "x"'s, so I'd have one for each sound the letter can make. X, Z, and SH.  So, it's pronounced ehk - ZO - shya.  You can hear me say it in this video, within the first 8 seconds, or so, haha.

And oooo, I just remembered back in Jersey, the Tasty Kake company made chocolate pies.  Double attack!

I've heard the feature market is small and difficult to break into in England. Have you looked into that? From what I've understood, the TV landscape on the other hand is quite rich and promising for new screenwriters. There seem to be numerous competitions/projects (The BBC writers room etc.) for new writers to break in, long-running TV programmes that give new writers plenty of opportunities. I've always found the TV system there interesting, but with no local knowledge of it I'm not the best to judge.

Either way, with features, I think the era of the Internet and possible interaction with producers through Skype etc. give chances to people far away from the intended arrival destination of a script, which is nice. As long as a great script is written the odds will be worse, but just a little less so.

Looking forward to seeing you around here and best of luck on your screenwriting journey.

Thanks man, looking forward to it, myself.  And yeah, I'm not too sure about the London scene.  I'd still try to do any kind of work with US companies. email and skype are beautiful things.
