Ok, I have a weekend of movie watching coming up.  I'm writing a romantic drama and need some inspiration. Would love some feedback.... and go!!!!

Ha! Not quite.  Sci-fi/Romance not my thing.

Recently watched the fault in our stars. Not bad and pretty sad.

Out if Africa is sad by the end if you consider it in the right bracket

"The Notebook" made me want to kill myself, so that's a good one.  "The Way We Were" and "Love Story" are two oldies but goodies.

Blue Valentine. Romantic and dramatic in equal measure. Good rec for people who want something harder-hitting than the Notebook. Fucking devastating.

Blue Valentine is at the top of my list! My script can go in a couple of directions at different levels of sadness and i just don't know which way to go. So as I've read, the best thing is to watch as many movies as I can.  Looking forward to being weepy mess lol. Thanks everyone!

Blue Valentine most definitely! Not mad into romance flicks but this one is absolutely amazing. Loved it.

I know it's more of a comedy but 500 Days Of Summer definitely has drama elements and is a brilliant film.

Heard 500 was great. I'll add that too. I love me some romance, sex, violence and sadness. (Not all at the same time ha!)  Deep emotional movies. You know what I mean.

Glenn, I was pleasantly surprised because I disliked the original so much and didn't expect anything of the remake, and of course Baz always makes things look so hyper real (your version of 'over the top' - think The Red Curtain Trilogy of films) but if you read some of the screenplays they're quite inspiring in terms of teaching you how to write filmically - jmh.

Loved Her!!!  I didn't see Gatsby yet, was on the fence. Crazy Stupid is on my list.

LC- please I get so emotional over sad movies. Ugly cry and everything!  Then, even when its over I still cry.

Yep, Luhrmann is all about the extravagant. I don't mind that at all if the story is strong but I felt that's where it was lacking. I quite liked Moulin Rouge and Romeo & Juliet. Hated Australia though!

Admittedly, I haven't read any of his scripts..

Absolutely agree - but that would be F.Scott Fitzgerald's fault - I always thought the story was pretty bland.

Don't let some of the guy's fool you. They cry as well (well, some of them do, not all).

Imh, it's the same parallel of why you enjoy being scared on a roller-coaster or watching a horror movie - just a different gene I guess. You experience the emotion  vicariously through the character. With romantic films you relate, with horror you can experience terror and scare yourself stupid but be safe. Perhaps you don't have the tear-jerk factor in your DNA, Pia. ;D Nothing wrong with that.

I love all the dark stuff - Blue Velvet, True Romance are two of my favs, but I also love a good weepy.

I hate it when they overdo the saccharine that'll ruin it for me. Richard Curtis is a terrific writer but 'Love Actually' nearly sent me around the bend.

I'd say I'm in the camp of around 80% dark stuff to 20% the other way.

I don't like sad ones, personally. I love rom/coms though. I avoid sad movies. Some people say they like a "good cry". I have enough stress and heartache in my life that I don't meed any more.  ;)  :P

To me, crying is for tragic events and funerals. I can't imagine wanting to pay for it the experience.

Some people have asked me how I can like horrors and dark stuff, but I live with a "comedian". I hear jokes and laugh heartily every day. I just need relief from it, comic that is, every now and then. ;D

Yeah...I think it's about what balances out your life.  :)

  I don't know what it is about sad love stories.  I'm drawn to them. I love horror movies equally.
