Anybody have an opinion on the format rules at StorySense.com?

They appear to be pretty much up to date (2014), but some vary from what I've learned here.

The basics are pretty much the same on every site.

It's usually the more uncommon elements, e.g. MONTAGE, where you'll see different views.

Personally if I'm in doubt I consult 'The Screenwriter's Bible', by David Trottier, new edition released last year. The author is widely respected as an authority on format.

What I like in particular re Trottier's book is that he himself say the 'rules' are really guides and he covers what has become accepted as industry standard, for now... he often points out that what's important isn't the rule but the fact that your execution is clear and consistent in the script.

That is a good point Anthony. Writing a script isn't like creating a citation using MLA where there is a definite right and wrong way to write them. Thanks for pointing that outas too often I think we get caught up in absolutes. I'll add that thought to mine. Gracias.

Just learn the basics and enjoy the process of writing. Don't get too bogged down with details. They will take you around in circles.

You're certainly right about that. AND -- this particular site helped me solve a technical problem with a feature I've been working on. I take what I need and leave the rest.

P.S. I don't cap sounds anymore (based on a comment I  read from you), even though this site says I should.

CAPPING "certain" sounds makes sense and can add to the read.

Gunshots, screams, roars...loud sounds, violent sounds, etc.

Just don't overdo it, as it can easily get irritating.
