I'm working long hours again atm and I'm filming Sunday. I'll try and make time for this though. In fact, I'm sure I will do something. I've been itching to write a short recently, but have been content rewriting the Fuck the Police feature.

Barely have time to do anything at the moment. Assignments coming thick and fast and working flat out. Gotta get something done for this though. Fingers crossed!

I was just about to ask when? Looking forward to seeing what it is.  :o

Due one day before Valentine's... Now, that's interesting.

Also a Friday the 13th. Maybe a romantic horror.
Posted by: Stumpzian, February 4th, 2015, 7:08pm; Reply: 6
Valentine's Day? Please, no.

Horror? That was last time.

Presidents Day? Naw, though Ray says Washington/Lincoln having sex with their wives might be interesting. (Mary Todd shouting, "Oh, Captain, my Captain!!!!!" comes to mind).

I vote for something unrelated to the month.

Henry.

Hmm, sounds interesting Henry, the sex/comedy part, but let's not forget President's Day means nothing to those of us in the Southern Hemisphere. Universal theme please. :)

Fingers crossed it's a decent challenge that can produce interesting scripts.

Character sits in a chair with a cup.

- Could be a table chair or an overstuffed chair, even a car seat. Doesn't matter. (Wheelchair if you wanna be cheeky! ;))

- Cup could be a Dixie/Solo cup, coffee cup, or glass of [vice of choice], even sulfuric acid. Doesn't matter.

Plain Jane good enuf?

Phil wrote one of those. It was great. Got produced too. They did a great job on it.

I LOVE the OWC! Always have, but I don't think I'll have time to take part. I could probably write something, but it's the reading of 30+ scripts that takes time.  :-/

Good point on the reading. I will catch up, but may not be as good as I usually am when it comes to the reads.

EXT. MIDDLE CLASS SUBURBAN FRONT PORCH - MORNING

MARNIE, ample in her resolute aplomb, sits motionless on
the porch swing, can of Guinness in hand.

The only thing that moves is the shine from the summer sun.

Marnie stares as time holds still in her beautiful world
where the wind doesn't blow, cars don't drive by, and even the
birds and dogs are silent.

Condensation on the can doesn't accumulate and roll.

Everything is motionless.

			MARNIE (V.O.)
		I shouln't have drunk this.
		I didn't need it. I didn't
		even want it. But...

Two open cans of Guinness stand at attention on the porch
floor beneath her. A fourth can awaits fulfillment.

			MARNIE (V.O.)
... a short story might give
me reason to take a break
		from all this...

Nothing continues.

			MARNIE (V.O.)
		nothing.

EXT. MIDDLE CLASS SUBURBAN STREET - MORNING
Marnie sits on her porch swing on a beautiful summer day.

A brown bird flies by.

Or was it grey? Or gray?

Marnie stands up, collects her cans, steps over a man's body as she
walks inside, and closes the door behind her.

EXT. WINDOW OF MIDDLE CLASS SUBURBAN HOME - MORNING
Inside she rolls the computer mouse, the screen lights up, she types.

INSERT:
	EXT. FOREST ROAD - NIGHT
A thunderstorm rages above a drenched man in a wheelchair.

He rolls down the dark road, knife in his back.

Wherein writers were given one week to write a 6 to 10 page short. Stand by for deets. Annoucement will be February 6. Scripts will be due on February 13th. Friday the 13th.

Hm. Either not-so-subtle foreshadowing or a red herring.

I wouldn't mind a Friday the 13th theme, especially if the focus was on the day itself. If most of the entries were just regular slashers and what not, that just happen to take place on Friday the 13th, they could be good, could be not, but I think it'd be a shame if the day didn't play an actual role in the story and was just there. I'd like to see the day be a good supporting character at worst and an omniscient antagonist at best. The superstitions about the unluckiness of Friday the 13th, I think it's good, I think it's interesting. If the theme does go there, I hope it will veer the entries towards exploring the concept of the day. Excited to see in which direction this will go.

...I only hope it doesn't feature valentines day too much. I'm not a hopeless romantic, I'm just hopeless when it comes to romance.

Yep that was the 2010 Halloween challenge. Really good scripts in that one. I love the limitations. Not a fan of a theme that is too open, which is why I didn't enter the last one. Hopefully this one suits me.

INT. SORORITY HOUSE DEN - NIGHT

A room full of tipsy young women cheer on JENNY TULL, cherry of a
girl, and DIXIE NORMUS, taco supreme, who sorta-stand nude over a
plastic cup on the floor, their drunken laughs are heinous.

			JENNY
We can do this! We can--

Dixie rolls to the side, Jenny tries to compensate.

She almost succeeds.

			DIXIE
		DO IT!

Dixie completes her slow fall to the ground, her leg launches the
cup several feet away, then a rooster tail of urine ejects into the
air in the cup's general vicinity.

			DIXIE
		DO IT, JENNY! Do it!
		Do it! Do it!

Jenny takes a single step towards the cup laying on its side, Dixie's
urine splatters on its topside, and cocks her own pelvis at an
unnatural angle.

A dozen cell phones record the streams crossed in this perverse
anti-Ghostbusters event.

The cup resonates the unfulfilled pitter-patter.

EXT. CAMPUS - DAY
Jenny and Dixie cake walk the sidewalk to the university library, they
shield their eyes from the sun's excessive use of sunlight.

A gaggle of girls clap to them and cheer as they semi-stagger by.

The couple observe the curious ritual oblivious to its meaning.

A squad of atheltic boys up the ante with riotous cheers to them

			BOY 1
Do it! Do it! Do it!

			BOY 2
		DO IT, JENNY! Do it!
		Do it! Do it!

An unsustainable curious smile evaporates from Jenny's face.

			DIXIE
		What's that all about?

Posted by: Mr. Blonde, February 6th, 2015, 8:59am; Reply: 34
Ouch. Is my stuff THAT predictable? I don't ALWAYS do crime/thrillers or stories that are written backwards...

Now, that I got my faux-irritation out of the way, your contest entry is going to be a Memento-style crime drama that deals with two people sitting at a table and discussing stuff not even remotely related to the plot. Then, in the last two pages, you have to reveal the whole plot through heavy-handed exposition and the good guy usually dies. Lol. =)

On a more serious note, guys, for this challenge, I would like you to submit to me, when it opens up, which topic you're going to pick. You'll know what I mean when you see the challenge. The reason why I'm doing this is so that we don't end up with fifteen scripts that are virtually identical. This will happen on a first come, first served basis. However, if an idea you want is already taken and you really have your heart set on it, let me know in the message. I'd prefer not to have more than two or three people doing any one idea, especially when there are so many good ideas to choose from.

While I am not exactly sure what you have in mind, I would discourage such complexity.

Every OWC brings many new names out of the woodwork.  Some will not understand the directions, some may not understand how to contact you, some will simply not care and do whatever they want.  I suspect many work right off the home page and do not even peruse these forums at all.

It is your show, and I am happy to sit back and watch it unfold as you see fit, but I am speaking from experience when I say "the simpler, the better".

Getting too jiggy with the OWC nearly always leads to unforseen problems.  It is very easy to wind up with a big clusterf*** on your hands.

I agree with Bert. Plus, it makes it harder to choose a favorite when people have different topics.

Posted by: DustinBowcot (Guest), February 6th, 2015, 10:58am; Reply: 38
I agree with Bert too. I think one topic for all with the same parameters is best all round.

I say let Blonde do what he wants.

Whatever he's up to sounds fun.
Posted by: nawazm11, February 6th, 2015, 11:52am; Reply: 41
I think Sean's idea could work, but if the guidelines handed out to each writer are very specific and constricting, it could result in some confusion like Bert said. Different genres for the same topic might be manageable, but I guess we'll see how it turns out.
Posted by: Don, February 6th, 2015, 12:09pm; Reply: 42
I want to acknowledge what Bert has said that simpler is easier.  However, I'm inclined to give Sean the leeway to try something new.

One of the advantages of a free, challenge (as opposed to a contest you pay to enter) is that you can experiment.  Also, since this challenge is pretty much limited to just the discussion board crowd, I'm sure we'll all be very understanding and forgiving of any hiccups.

Also, bear in mind that until the OWC theme and genre is posted, nothing is set in stone and things might change.

On a more serious note, I do agree with Bert, that simpler is usually better for these OWC's.

But I do like what Sean is talking about in theory...we'll have to wait and see exactly what he has in mind.

Whatever it turns out to be, I hope to be in and right the wrong I shit out the last OWC.  I'm still very embarrassed over that POS.

Tally Ho!
Posted by: Mr. Blonde, February 6th, 2015, 1:00pm; Reply: 44
Guys, I give you my word. If this weren't the way to produce the best quality product, I wouldn't do it. I think this will result in a better OWC (in this particular instance, only) than if it were a free choice one as has been done in the past. I hope it works like I imagined, but if it doesn't, I'll take full responsibility. It's time to experiment. =)

This doesn't bother me in the slightest, but have you taken the different time zones into account. In the UK the theme and genre won't be announced until 2am, so unless people are keen enough to stay up that late, some might see it as a disadvantage.

Again, doesn't bother me, just a thought. What I wanted to know was how do we submit to you?

I've tried as best to take that into account. The opening time could be made as early as 7PM EST (12AM GMT) but that might still cause problems. There's almost no universal way to appease everyone so I have to try and do the best I can.

As for your second part, if you click on my name to the left of this message, there will be an option on the middle-right of the screen that says, "Send a Private Message".

However, I will post the process in simpler detail and more available on the actual thread when I open it tonight. =)

EDIT: I'm very flexible. No one will be at a disadvantage because, if they really want to do one specific topic over another, they'll be accomodated. I just don't want everyone rushing to pick one when there are many choices out there.

You'll have a week to write a short script. Does five hours plus or minus really matter? If so, what about those in Oz? :)

I like the idea of having options, but I'm not so crazy about having to "reserve" them in order to start writing. Truth is, I wouldn't want to limit myself until I actually have a story in my head. So we're talking like... Tuesday or Wednesday I'd actually know what topic I want. I'm also not sure how first come first serve works when there's no upper limit to the entries.

IMO, Options = Good. Arbitrary limitations on # of entries per topic = Bad.

I'd be interested to see it play out though. There's always the option to ignore what is inconvenient to you.
Posted by: Mr. Blonde, February 6th, 2015, 2:21pm; Reply: 51
I'm telling you, you guys are worrying over nothing. I'll be honest, I'm more worried about how you feel about the contest in general than whether or not certain options are going to be available to you.

Note to self: next time, just do the simple time travel one again... Lol.

Makes no diff to us Aussie legends Don. It's usually about 2 pm Sat arve here when you announce it.  We still have exactly the same time to write and submit so no problemo from this little black duck.

On another note, I always bring up this suggestion for an OWC:  we have a theme and people, get randomly allocated a genre for that theme. Just an idea for the future.

PS - Blondie, how about a parameter of a minimum of one char has to be wearing denim cutoffs?

Actually I've always taken this as a test of our British manhood. ;D

You know, the journey from a lad to a man, proven by our ability to cope with almost a day less than everyone else (late to know about it, have to enter early etc) . Ok, ok...
