SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Questions or Comments  /  Simply scripts home page

Hello fellow SS members.  I wanted to say a few things about the SS home page.  It's very hard to navigate it.

It seems that the home page has a lot of info on it, but, it takes forever to access it, and requires going from page to page to page.  That isn't very realistic.  Wouldn't it be easier if the following was done, if it's possible:

1.  You rework all of the promoted scripts in their own section, that way Janet's work becomes available to anyone who wants to read it, even if that review was done a year ago?  That seems to be your bread and butter (shorts) so, shouldn't you feature them on the home page?

2.  Your full length screenplays should also have their own link, right?  Again, shouldn't the best of the best be placed in such a way that a director or producer doing a fast search can see the links?  They won't take the time to move from page to page looking for ones they haven't seen yet.  If you post them separately, then they can find them easier.

3.  Wouldn't it be more beneficial to have all the nobullscript reviews in one tab too?  Again, one click access for anyone who wants to look for an idea.

I think this site is amazing and there are some great folks on this site, and I just want to give all the best scripts the best way possible to have people's dreams realized, and each having their own tabs would, IMO help.  You could put TV scripts and movie scripts together in research or something like that.

I'm just trying to help.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Dan, are you talking about the SS DISCUSSION page where scripts and feedback are posted, or the SS HOMEPAGE where other updates and notices are posted?

Also, STS - Janet's website, is a separate section/offshoot of SS.

SS is a site where anybody and everybody can post their scripts, with no obligation to partake in anything else. Apropos of that, some writers will post their scripts on SS and never make an appearance as far as feedback/discussion is concerned. The other side of the coin is I'm sure a good few writers who never appear on the discussion boards have been contacted by producers via their email contact details on their script.

Don also provides a link on the main discussion board where members can post their website addresses.
http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-News/m-1388760285/s-0/   Perhaps that could be more prominent... but otherwise I think it's pretty streamlined, I dunno...

The 'best of the best' is a pretty subjective term imh, too.

Hey Libby,  I'm not talking about this section, all the discussion board stuff.  I'm talking about on the SS home page, you know, at the top of the page it says home.  If you click on that, I'm talking about that section.

Janet and others post reviews of the best of the best.  They try to make it easier for producers and people to find them.  But, whenever I try to use it, I get frustrated b/c it's so hard to move page after page.

Yes, anyone can post on here, on the discussion board.  And I'm sure people do get stuff optioned here, but, Janet also takes time to post the best of the best and that section seems very hard to navigate.

My thought was to combine some headers on that page, and make the stuff that seems to lead to stuff getting sold or optioned more available.  One click and you go to all of the stories that Janet and the others have reviewed.  One click and you go to all the scripts of the month.  One click and you go to all of the nobullscript reviews.  One click instead of how it's set up now.

If I wanted to read on her site, it's almost impossible to transverse the pages b/c they go back and forth between new stuff and old stuff.  I'm just trying to streamline stuff for everyone, especially people like you LC that are really skilled to have the best chance of getting read.

Oh, I get you now. Your query is mostly about easy access to STS.

I reckon Janet's the best one to chime in on this.

I've looked at a lot of the STS reviews on the home page.

If I could add one suggestion there it would be that the author of the script (their name) is made prominent under the Script title - perhaps 'posted by wonkavite' could go underneath. I know there is a blurb at the bottom 'about the writer' or words to that effect, but at the moment I think the writer's name gets a little lost and the next thing seen is the reviewer's name.

I agree LC.  That should be at the top.

And yes, it is on that page.  Actually Janet told me that it was more Don's area and that I should post it on here to start a discussion about it.  Actually, it's more probably about the programmer if they can move stuff around.

Since you have looked around on that part of the site STS, you know how inefficient that it is.  I hope they can make it better to navigate.

Since we are on the subject - my personal preference would be that the last comment posted on any thread is the first one to appear when you open the thread.

I agree with you on this but if you look closer, site admin is the first post. It's a link to the script. Putting it in reverse would put that post last on the thread which is a huge sacrifice. Not sure how you'd get around that.

The only way around it is to have a 'go to last post' link or a 'go to last read post' link. Some forum software allows for it. Not sure if this one does. If not, it would take some coding to do, which takes time and know-how.

Whoa? There's more to this site than just the message boards?

Yes, if you click on the home page up at the top, it brings you to the sister site, which is how i found out about the message boards aka discussion boards.

I'd like to see them a bit more user friendly.

Hey guys,

Just got home and settled long enough to chime in on this thread.

As others have mentioned, there's *a lot* of material available on Simplyscripts (of which STS is only one small part.)  :))

I'm sure everyone - including me - have views about how the home page should be structured to maximize readability, with a user friendy format.

The thing to remember is that Don's working with a certain programming framework - which might limit options; not to mention the fact that doing a major redesign requires time and money... both of which can be scarce...

As far as STS goes, searchability is the reason that we run a separate blog here: https://simplyscriptsreviews.wordpress.com/

Same reviews, articles and information.  Just, a little more self-contained.  :))

Hi Janet,
It might not be doable, but, it never hurts to ask.  Perhaps if it is just renaming tabs and stuff, it might not cost anything.  Perhaps you could put out an ask to the community looking for someone who can help.  I belong to a myvegas website and the one guy is always asking for, and getting help for his free website by users.  It's possible that there are people on here that know how to do that too.

Or you could partner with a school in the area and give them some free work to hone their skills.  They could be on the job training, or even say, give them credits to help do stuff.  That's what I did :)
