I just stumbled across this gem called Kung Fury.

DISCLAIMER  I'm an 80s guy.  I had a ton of fun and played a lot of video games, saw lots of movies and am heavily influenced by the culture of the 80s.

I like stupid dumb.  Kung Fury is such a movie.  A product of dozens of movies and failed ideas and video games like Tron, and more randomness then you could say came out of left GALAXY (forget left field) this 30 min follows the life of Kung Fury.

Who is Kung Fury?  He was a regular cop until his father-like figure gets killed by a ninja master.  Before he can respond, the man who would become Kung Fury gets hit by lightning while getting bitten by a cobra, in between 2 buildings, to become the mythical warrior Kung Fury.  He defeats the Warrior and decides to help his city, set in Miami, 1985.

Our story starts after a video game goes berserk and Kung Fury is the only one who can stop it.  Don't you hate it when your video game goes on a killing spree?  I know I do.

Hitler comes to the future to kill Kung Fury.  So, Kung Fury decides to go in the past and kill Hitler.  Seriously, that was his idea.

However, a mistake happens and funny insanity follows.

Featuring such memorable characters as Kung Fury, Hackerman, Barbarianna, Thor and others, this romp through pop culture will leave you either hoping it ends now, or never.  I could have watched this for another hour.

This was a kickstarter movie.  Make no mistake, this is not for everyone.  But, if you loved the 80s, half the fun is picking out the references, half is the absurdity, half is the crazy (for the budget) special effects and you have 150% already, just the sort of thing this movie would want you to add it up to.

Here is a link to the movie:  For free.

Don't say I didn't warn you.

Been following this project a little before the kickstarter video. It took them a year and half to finish the movie after they raised the money and it was supposed to be longer.

Anyway.

Movie looks great, seriously, they totally nailed almost everything visually. The fact that it cost under a million and what they did with it, I tip my hat.

Other than that... I get what the movie is trying to do... BUT... it failed, IMO. Instead of making an intentionally funny, tongue in cheek type of movie, a la Black Dynamite, they made a stupid one. Its very difficult to maintain a pace in that kind of movie and for the movie to not become boring very fast. But here, they try something and it totally doesn't work. Every 30 sec something happens, there are no character interactions that last longer than 20 seconds. Just one thing after another with corny lines in-between.

Love the visual style, but not much else.

Looks utterly fantastic. Incredible work on that front, really incredible.

It was fun in an unintentionally abstract way. Like looking at a piece of art. It just sort of flows merrily from one thing to the next.

It was so well-done, I ended up wanting it to be a better actual film. Seemed a shame to put so much effort into something so stupid. It would have been better if they tried to tell the story well. With all the characters they had, it could have worked. By trying to make it intentionally silly, it missed the mark.
