So - I'm currently mulling my next tech purchase.  My goal - a "pc" that's light weight with a decent sized keyboard for typing - and small enough to be stuffed in a (large) purse.  And cheap enough that I don't care if it gets stolen. I've noticed that the ASUS 2 and 1 Chromebook's pretty good for that. But the OS obviously gives me pause.

I know it can't use Final Draft - though Word's okay - but my understanding is that *some* of a Chromebook can't be used unless online.  I do most of my writing offline in the subway.  

Anyone have experience with one of these suckers?  If so, I'd love it if you'd share!  "P

I bought a chromebook for my Mom - I hated it.

Everything to me was anti-intuitive in terms of how the OS works. I am a Microsoft guy so keep that it mind - I would never buy another  

I hear similar things to eldave in terms of counter-intuitive IOS and the thought of not being able to use a dedicated screenwriting program makes me shudder!

Have you considered an iPad with a keyboard? That's my setup for travelling and FD and Fade In both have decent ipad apps... I use FD and sync back to dropbox as soon as I get near WiFi... works pretty well for me.

I just purchased a cheap, small, light Windows laptop for this exact purpose. Cost me the same as a Chromebook, but let's me run Final Draft on it, thus turning my commute into something productive!

Have you looked into these instead?

PS - I did buy my wife a Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga - she loves it. It serves both as a tablet and a notebook

Honestly, I'm majorly considering a Surface Pro (and they should be coming out with the 4 during Microsoft's October 6th event.)

After all, that allows me to run art programs with a great stylus - and other non-truncated programs (which Chromebooks AND iPad...even the upcoming Pro don't, due to their OS'.) As some people on SS may not know, I'm actually a pretty nifty artist as well - good at illustration and some 3d.  So being able to doodle properly on whatever I buy would be a plus.  And really... I've tried all the supposed styluses for the iPad.  Even the Wacom high-priced one is crappy.  And why would I buy an Ipad Pro in November, when it won't run Zbrush or Maya?

But since I write quite a bit on the subway, I'm still mulling the idea of having a cheap machine that I won't tear my hair out about if it were to get stolen.  

Still, if Chrome's THAT crappy, maybe I'll just go with the Surface.... and fight tooth and nail if anyone tries anything!  :PPPP

IMO - you cannot go wrong with the Surface - it is a solid machine
