SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  January 2016 OWC  /  January OWC?

Hopefully, Don won't mind this, but I'm sticking to tradition.

It's slow as hell here. Seven days worth of threads on the portal?? Traditionally we always have a OWC in January, April, July and October and they always liven up the boards and get people writing more. How about it?

Comedy anyone? I can't even remember when we did that last.

Comedy!!!  YES!!!!

I'd love an OWC, as I think I missed the last one, but I'll need some warning, as my work life is alot more time consuming than in the past.

You guys and your comedies. Lol. Still, it is coming up on that time of year.

Count me out for comedy. But good luck and lots of fun to all participants :)

In all fairness, taking what I said into account, there is an idea for an OWC that I've had rattling around in my head for a while now. And, it's funny, looking back on the OWCs for the last two years, I hadn't realized this until just now, but I've hosted the last two OWCs to start the year off.

Interested as always but comedy ain't really my bag... still, I'll probably give it a go,

Never written a comedy. Not intentionally anyway. Have an idea for one though. I'd be up for a OWC.

All my shorts are unintentional comedies. I'll win this hands down. Lol

anything would be cool

i would like to see a comedy challenge, as it would be damn hard, but its not for everyone. so maybe it could be split into two different genres and then we choose one from each

anyway, whatever we think, don will have his own ideas.

Good, otherwise it'd be June before it dawned on me that we haven't had a challenge in a while...

Undoubtedly the death knell of SimplyScripts

Yes, I agree.  Sounds like Mr. B would like to take point on this one.

I will announce the timeframe shortly.  This will be limited to discussion board members, so will be light on entries.

Oooh.

I might have a go. At the challenge I mean.

Unless I find the theme unbearable. That's happened before. It might have been I just couldn't come up with anything decent. But I couldn't possibly comment. Didn't seem to stop some others. Commenting I mean.

I look forward to seeing what Blondie and Don come up with.

I feel the same way about comedy, but this is supposed to be a challenge, not a cake walk, so...  :)

Comedy, ay? So that means I have to submit a serious script lol?

A pisstake of a pisstake...now there's a first.

Looking forward to Blondie's involvement. He organised the time travel one two years back and that produced some fine work.

Comedy would be a nightmare of people not finding anything funny after the first page and declaring themselves out. Even though it will be obvious everybody has tried to be funny, people not feeling in a 'funny' mood will read it and declare it as being more like something from the horror genre.

Comedy is something I have to be in the mood for. If I approach it in the wrong mood, the story will have to work hard to make me laugh. Plus, reading one type of comedy could well ruin the vibe of a second script written using a different type of comedy.

I like comedy... just not all the time. One or two scripts out of thirty sounds good to me.

In regard to the site slowing down, this is true of all sites (aside from commercial ones) over the festive period.

Not sure I'll be entering this one as I'm writing too much already, but I am easily inspired, so who knows.

At the moment, I know I shouldn't, but when the time comes, and it's in my face, I won't be able to resist.

Personally, I think the OWC's should not be be genre restricted. i.e., pick a topic that is a;; genre friendly and let the writer decide the genre. Don't get me wrong - comedy is my personal fav - especially to read - but I find script reading more appealing when I open the script and I don't know which genre I'm getting.

I think Dave has a great point here and personally, I tend to agree.

The problem with reading (and reviewing) a shitload of scripts, all on the same subject and all in the same genre, is that it gets quite dull, quite fast, and the shit scripts stand out like a sore thumb.

I'd be down for comedy or an open genre challenge.

I think you guys are going to have enough options to toy around with on this one. It'll be very genre-friendly (I don't expect to see many straight dramas written...).
Posted by: stevie, January 6th, 2016, 4:35pm; Reply: 21
Open genre is fine as long as it has a decent theme with interesting requirements to be fulfilled. The open theme ones create the average scripts IMO.

I'm new here, never done OWC before. Are there rules beyond the basic write a script fitting the challenge in one week? Like unwritten rules or something? I'd love to do this, as long as I don't become too busy or anything. Anything I need to do to be a part of this, or just write and submit? I'm glad I joined in time to be in a comedy one, as that is my preferred genre.

Welcome to SS, Hunter!

The OWC stands for One Week Challenge. It's supposed to be a challenge, not a cake walk. It's meant to challenge us as writers. Pretend a producer asked you to write a script with a short deadline and very specific guidelines. That's what this is supposed to be. It's usually a lot of fun, but can be a bruising experience too when you receive comments on your own script. That's part of the fun though. It's not required to read and comment on all the scripts submitted, but reading none of them is frowned upon.

Also, I suggested comedy because I can't remember when we last did one. This does not in any way mean it will be comedy. The genre, theme and subject is completely up to Don and I guess Sean/Mr. Blonde. The assignment will be a secret until either one of them announces the next OWC.  8)

Thanks! Well even if it isn't comedy, if I can come up with an idea I'll give it a shot. And if I participate, I will definitely read many of the scripts and comment on them.

I don't know if they'd be able to find a way to make Cowboy Sam 2: Cowboy Harder find into the parameters this time around. Possible, but tricky.

I'm hoping that if we do get a January OWC, it will not fall on the week of the 25th, as I'll be in Nashville all week on business.

This weekend is the first time I take my wife....err...away for the weekend, for a long....longtime. :K)

Hell, it's an OWC, she has to learn priorities  :D

PS in the reference to God, I was of course meaning Don...unless he hates such references etc then it's somebody else

Curtains are lifted tomorrow night, Bill. And, besides, it's not a one weekend challenge (although that'd still be the same acronym). You'll have time and it's an easy topic, anyway. =)

The challenge has been announced:
