Writers wanted for Horror series. So they want a writer to write from scratch. No pay.

For a short that I already have written, then I may let it go for free to a student. However for an entire web series you would think the producers had a budget. Yet they can't afford to pay the writer?

Obviously this web series will never get off the ground. The poor writer will be left to do all of the work, only for it to go nowhere in the end anyway.

Fairly common type of ad unfortunately, especially on Craigslist, but you never know where you are going to find the right connection or opportunity... personally not one I'd really consider without some guarantees it would be made, which of course there aren't any in the advert itself ;-(

Yeah, it's not always about money. Certainly the most important thing is getting things made. There has to be something on the table, a heap of equipment and available skills/talent is very valuable too. A full editing suite and a guy that really knows what he's doing. Colour grading.

There's just so much involved in making even a short 3 minute film, that for a web series there should be money on the table. It's a lot of work for other people that will most likely go nowhere.

Totally agree, and I've noticed that Ads on Craigslist, even Mandy sometimes suffer from creative non writers been the ones who draft the ads... they could have all the things you mentioned, a show reel that has existing work on etc etc, but no one will know if they don't put it in the Ad and it makes them look a bit Mickey Mouse!

Yeah, I think 99% of those leads are bullshit in the end. Sorry to say.

Hard to say, I know from experience though that at least 50% of opportunities end up not panning out in one way or another...

My current philosophy is to try and connect with the things I've already written, I'm not really looking to write new material unless it's from on of my own ideas or is for a specific competition.

I've arrived at this after writing 8 shorts and starting 1 feature for specific producers, out of these only 1 short has been produced and only 1 other is still in anyway active.

But you live and learn ;-)

I think they're all genuine people that want to get something done, and maybe one in every thousand or so accomplishes something. Like Anthony, I've worked for nothing before only for it to end up going nowhere.

It feels good when somebody believes in our work, but we have to be realistic about the prospects of production. No money is a big give-away that the project will go nowhere.

I've had similar experiences. I've been almost actively writing for 2 years now.

5-6 times, I've been contacted to write something. Others have reached out to me. I do. They "love it". Then the "producers" get lost, don't contact you and nothing comes off it. Sometimes the same "producer/director" will contact me back in a few months with a new "opportunity", I'll write something and nothing will come off of that as well.

Dustin - yep, agree, 100%

Demento - I've had the 'really, we'll be able to make it this time... promise' opportunity too, only consolation is two decent shorts cam out of it!
