$35 poxy dollars? That's just over 20 quid for a 5 page short.

When one writes for themselves, it's fun, enjoyable... writing for somebody else is work. It will take around 20 hours to write a 5-page short. Even on minimum wage (which I'm estimating at £7 per hour) that's £140, so more like $250.

At least this one offers to pay, but the derisory figure puts me in mind of a 9-year-old boy that has got a GoPro for his birthday and is now investing the rest of his birthday money into a film.

I say that, because I did buy my 9-year-old son a GoPro for his birthday... he also has the use of  a Canon 600D. So be careful out there.

I hear you Dustin.

but I guess the other side of the argument is that the 5 page short you've written for yourself, fun as it might be, may never get optioned/sold and could therefore be argued has cost you $35 in an opportunity cost kinda way.

Of course I'm just playing devils advocate ;-) The only ads I personally respond to are the ones seeking already written material.

But each to their own, and you never know where and when you'll make a useful connection via these sort of ads.

Well that's my theory anyway ;-)

Every man and his dog are filmmakers these days is my point. Often, it's less about making connections than it is selling yourself short.

One good thing produced work does (no matter how poor) is open a few doors. However it only partly opens them and there's somebody standing the other side, trying to close it again.

Agree completely Dustin, and of course one of the other problems is that every man and his dog are screenwriters too.

Remind me, why do we do this again ;-)
