Does this work? The idea is to have the messages floating next to the characters so as to not take away from the action on screen.

He quickly flicks his wrist and clicks the mouse multiple times, eyes jet back and forth at the monitor. Suddenly a CHIME from a Facebook message comes through. He smirks and starts to type quickly.

SUPERIMPOSE SERIES OF MESSAGES

MANDY
Hey baby, finally home I see.

BEN
Long day, someone got canned. So that was interesting. When can we meet?

MANDY
Soon. I have a surprise for you at work tomorrow.

This has been done to death in recent years. Especially in shorts. Realistically, it's the way to go. You can't keep cutting to a phone.
