SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /   General Chat  /  Another stolen screenplay...

The above link is to a short film I found on youtube. Not only was I not asked for permission to use my screenplay(link here-http://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-short/m-1199652397/s-0/), but the director also took the writing credit for himself.

Should I reach out to youtube and have them take the video down? I've already reached out to the up-loader.

I'd be telling him that if he leaves it up, he better give you writing credit. That is IF you want it left up.
I would contact youtube, too.

You can open a copyright claim with YouTube and they'll take it down for you.
Posted by: Zack, August 3rd, 2016, 2:53pm; Reply: 3
Thanks guys. I'm gonna see if youtube will just take the video down. It really pisses me off that the director took credit for writing my screenplay.

This is worse than mine, at least no one claimed they'd writtent them!

As said prev and above, you can get Youtube to take it down, but somehow that doesn;t seem enough here - he's a thieving scumbag!

Woah, Zack - that stinks!  Everyone else who's commented is right.  You should contact the person and Youtube.  The film needs to be taken down, and IF you even let him keep it, you need to get credit.

How'd you find it?  Just random Youtube search?  :/
Posted by: Zack, August 3rd, 2016, 6:13pm; Reply: 6
Yeah I search youtube every so often. This is not the first time this has happened to me.

I would absolutely do something about it. I would post on Youtube just to expose him, then file a DMCA takedown notice with Youtube. Not only did he steal your credit, he put it in great big letters at the beginning of the film and didn't even credit the actors in the film.

Let him be shamed.

I actually remember reading this script on here.

Truly shameful.

And Sarah Charlton is a liar.

I think this is his FB page. Not 100% sure, but he's a filmmaker. The other main hit is a lawyer.

Have you all actually commented on the YouTube page? If so, he appears to have deleted them. It starts...

Mine seem to be still there in what I can see - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJhqAZProrw and https://vimeo.com/160672984

Strange, I can see my comment on my PC, move to my son's PC and it's not there. I left a response on my son's PC (using his account), but it's not there when I look on mine. Only my comment.

Does YouTube allow comment administration?
Posted by: Zack, August 4th, 2016, 1:52pm; Reply: 23
All I see is my comment as well. Hmm... How long will it take youtube to take the video down?

On my laptop, I can only see one comment from a woman posted four months ago.

Ditto.

That said, on my phone, while this is the only one I can actually read, the number of comments says four. On my laptop, it only says one. Fishy (although beyond outright disabling comments, I don't know how this shit is supposed to work on YouTube).

No problem... here's a number from his profile page. You may be able to call him: 778-688-9649

I'd have to jump through hoops to check if the number is live from here in the UK, so can't be sure it works.

Nah - I STILL see my comment on there.  Is it an issue of viewing permissions?  :P  (For me, just mine and the old compliment by a female are the only ones I see.)

Same here.  I left a choice comment for this little douchebag yesterday.  All I can see is my comment and the other woman's comment(probably the kid's relative)

A YouTube channel can set comments so that all comments must be approved before being publicly visible. If you can see your own but no-one else can (I see none of yours, even signed out), that's probably what's happening.

This kid went to the same film school as me. What a little shit.

Huh...today I find one for me, too, for "Someplace Nice & Dark":

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HBQVKCn3MTE

No need to watch the whole thing.  It's not so great -- liberally adapted, but with most of the dialogue still in place.

I am acknowledged in the credits, kind of, with my name wrong.  Never heard of the guy, but he even loaded it into IMDb.

Feel free to give him online sh*t -- if you're the type to do so -- and tell him to add a "Story by" credit to my IMDb haha.

Jeez, another one... Are you going to ask him to pull it?

It doesn't do your screenplay justice. Not even a little. I would have it taken down.

Honestly, I'm kinda shocked that this happens that frequent. I suppose this isn't a new trend either?

Thank you.  That is very kind.  I'm not even sure what was going on at the end of that film, and I wrote it haha.

Naw...who has time to chase all that stuff down?

The extent of my hobby here is perhaps finding a few readers that enjoy my stuff -- as this guy obviously did -- and perhaps accumulating a few IMDb credits along the way.

A lame hobby, perhaps, but it's mine :)

They are pretty easy to get pulled... but your choice of course...

It appears that the YouTube version is down, however the Vimeo is still up: https://vimeo.com/160672984

What concerns me about  Bert's script is the film maker states, "This was a second year University film showcase, in which a script was given to us to adapt. We were informed we had permission to shoot your script among other scripts by our tutor, we were not aware it was not public domain. "

Perhaps we (I) need to craft a statement regarding "For Educational Purposes Only" and the pitfalls therein.

e.g., Even if you are going to use the script for educational purposes only, you still need to contact the writer. If you put your film on YouTube or any video site that has advertising on it, the script is no longer for education purposes since someone is making money from it.
