SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  January 2017 One Week Challenge  /  The Real January 2017 OWC Theme Is...
Posted by: Mr. Blonde, January 20th, 2017, 11:00pm
Welcome to the "Gender Swap" One Week Challenge:

We’ve all heard the old adage, “Women are from Venus, Men are from Mars”. If that’s the case, then it’s time to visit a new planet because the rules of this challenge are exceedingly simple: any man entering this challenge cannot write a male character and any woman cannot write a female character. One of the hardest things a writer can do (it seems) is write a character of the opposite sex. Just to make your lives that much more miserable, EVERY character is going to be your opposite gender.

But, you didn’t think it was going to be that easy, did you? No, see, having an open genre when all you have to do is write differently-gendered characters is far too simple. Instead, the genre system is a little bit different. This time around, your genre has been randomly assigned to you from the following nine options: action, comedy, horror, sci-fi, thriller, western, noir, sports and random (you choose the genre you want out of the list provided). I’ve sent a PM to every RSVPer with one word in it: the genre that’s been randomly assigned.

And, now, the clock is ticking.

T-minus 168 hours until your OWC script is due.

Topic: Gender Swap.
Genre: Assigned.

You have seven days to write a screenplay of up to 12 pages. The screenplay must be properly formatted and in PDF format. The scripts are due on Friday, January 27th at 11:59PM EST and must be submitted to: SimplyScripts.com/owc.

There will be a Review Page E-mailed to you for you to score the scripts you read. Please only give scores to scripts that you have read.

Timeline:

January 20th at 11:59PM EST - Theme and Genre announced.

January 27th at 11:59PM EST - Scripts are due.

February 3rd at 5:00PM EST - Names and results revealed.

Da Rules:

Your script must be written in the genre assigned to you and also features only characters who are of your opposite gender (men write only female characters, women write only male characters).

Please do not give a score inside the actual script review. I will be trying something different when it comes to that this time around. Thank you.

Jargon:

1-12 pages.

Properly formatted & saved as a PDF file.

This isn't a contest. There are no prizes.

Free to submit.

One entry per person.

No pissers, please.

You can revise your script as many times as you wish up until 11:59PM EST on January 27th.

Participants are strongly encouraged to read and comment/review on the scripts submitted.

Do not put your real name on your script. However, please use your real name when submitting your script. (After the challenge closes you can either have your script removed or resubmit with your script with your name on it.

Please put © on the bottom left corner of your title page.

Best of luck and I hope you guys have a lot of fun with this contest.

Also, for anyone interested, if you really didn't like your genre pull, send me a PM and I'll pull for you one more time. Whatever it comes up, you stick with it.

EDIT: You should have all received your genres in your PMs. Good luck and have fun. =)

Maybe so, but his script would have to be nothing but transsexuals... in a specific genre. Lol. =)

Since there are only a handful of female writers around here, we'll be easily identified by having all male characters...

Mark, I don't want to beat a dead horse here, but perhaps you should flip everything - meaning perhaps you write sober and edit drunk?

I've seen the complete list of potential entrants, Pia. I think you'll be okay when it comes to getting a legitimate review, if that's the worry. If it's about guessing who wrote what, you do have a point.

I write both genders easily so I'm not fazed by that. Yes, I will blow my own trumpet on that.

Not to say the rest is easy, it never is.
Not sure I'm in yet either, I'm meant to be focusing on the feature.

I took all that out cause it is perfectly clear, even for the dummies. :)

So, all cast is one gender?
And we don't actually choose the genre as it's been randomly assigned to us, not under negotiation.

That is correct. And, if you're dissatisfied with your genre, I will pull randomly for you one time. That one, you're stuck with. And, no, non-negotiable. =)

So is it okay for a western to be a mix of young psychos in love, but on a spacecraft iin the middle of a race of naked old people who use their genetails to kill others?  I mean Star Wars is a space western.
I need help.  Take that any way you want.

Sounds fun! And there are a couple of genres here I hate, one in particular, so I'm glad I didn't get either of those.

I'm actually really excited, though my script might be terrible. I guess we will see in a week.

And then you had to go and quote me. Cool. That's doubly clear.

Personally I like the genre randomly assigned to me, if I take up the challenge. Ta, for that.

Here's the deal, Dan. Star Wars is a space western, but in a video store, would you ever find Star Wars in the Western section? Would you find it there or in the Sci-Fi section? The point is, the genre you were assigned is what it should primarily be. Horror can be funny without being a comedy, noir can have sci-fi. It's one of those things where, if you know your genre, make it the primary focus, but feel free to dabble in other genres, as well. =)

Sean,

Gender  -  Sex

Genre - Category

I am assuming the writers have to stick with the assigned Gender (sex) and have one change to revised Genre (category)

Yes. They're stuck writing the opposite gender, but they have one chance to change the genre they were assigned.

SS isn't as busy as it used to be. Gotta expect that. Besides, it's late, some of our RSVPs live across the pond and we had nearly 40 RSVPs.

My real question is, would it still have been a great challenge if you ended up with a western? Lol.

Just to confirm:

There can't be ANY instances of the other sex in the script?

Like a dead body, or just a shot of city street where other people are walking by.

There will literally be only the one sex on screen at any time?

I believe it's no opposite gender characters. A dead body is not a character. Unless you write something like swiss army man.  ;D

Got a great story, but I reckon it might be too complicated for me to get right in the time.

I always get ripped when I try something a bit too ambitious in the time. It works better in the hustle and bustle of the OWC to have a really simple story, I find.

Not that anyone cares. I'm just chatting...

I'm a bit unsure of this one. I usually do quite well given a set of parameters and can come up with a unique story for me. This one seems so open, anyone can pick any of their existing short scripts that's in their genre and just change all the characters to be the opposite of their own gender.

I won't do that of course, I'm just saying anyone could. I find when a challenge is too open, I struggle.

It's like if you said, write a sci-fi script - ANY sci-fi script. I'd be sat here drawing a blank all week. But if you said write a sci-fi script, 10 pages long where your character encounters an A.I. that's just achieved sentience. Well, then my mind would be off like a shot.

With this...I'm really drawing a complete blank, but I'll have a think.

If you have a ambitious story I'd stay tackle the challenge head on and try to write it. There's no penalty for not succeeding. The only way you will absolutely fail is if you don't even make an attempt. And you can always expand upon it later.

Should be a hell of a challenge for you. I'm not to keen on my genre either, but I'm running with it. And female characters have always been a problem for me, so I'm sorta double screwed. Oh well. Bring it on. I like these challenges because sometimes they really force me to step out of my comfort zone. Good luck to everyone involved! Can't wait to read what you guys come up with.

Strange how sometimes one can invent a hundred stories and other times... Absolutely nothing.

I had that with the fairy tales... Tried for a week to get a story.  Never got a single thing.

Start asking yourself some questions or set your own parameters.

Just finding out now about this as I work Satdy arve/night.

Am happy with the random way the genre as been assigned - Blondie, that is actually an idea of mine for an OWC that I've brought up  a few times!! Thanks in advance for the acknowledgement lol.

But i'm with Mark R on this re more criteria. The beauty of the OWCs of the past has been the unique parameters set. I am no fan of the open ones and this is one of the those apart from the gender thing (just a reminder that there are only 2 genders in this world lol). ::)

If you can give me more criteria to make the theme more and specific and much more interesting then hit me with some.

PS - female Bunnyman lol! ;D

Mark, your comment is interesting. Some time ago, I was openly annoyed about the tight regulations of the taxi challenge and people then called me out, said I'm a non-creative person and stated it's a sign of lacking creativity when not finding inspiration within close margins. I took that to heart…

To me, the topic is more than great because I only reach sentience if you let me out go play :-)

Anyway, I hope you walk through and enter... think about meaning perhaps... what specific abilities women got or what their impact on the world is... what fucks you up about them or what you think they succeed with.

Can I get some feedback on what people would accept as Sports genre. Obviously, there has to be some sort of sporting activity featured prominently, but must it have a "team needs to win the big game" element?

For example, I'd say Point Break fits in the sports genre even though it's mainly a crime/thriller. Even The Descent I feel like could be classified as sports.
Posted by: Mr. Blonde, January 21st, 2017, 9:54pm; Reply: 57
Here's what I was thinking with sports, Mark, if you're not going to do a standard sports story: The Running Man, Death Race 2000, BASEketball. Anything can be turned into a sport, if you get creative.
Posted by: LC, January 21st, 2017, 10:09pm; Reply: 58
Sports genre is hard, or it seems so straight off. I wouldn't have known what to do with that.

Thinking though...

Simplify it.

All the obvious U.S movies come to mind like: Bull Durham, Jerry Maguire, Rocky etc. The central story is about sport. But there's a lot more going on underneath. They were clever weaving the love story 'you complete me' around a sports story that otherwise probably would have bored the pants off me with JM.

Considering this a short I personally would choose kids or adolescent females, perhaps a competitive plot, moral to the story, about winning and losing, perhaps bullying, or that sport is typically a more male domain. And comedy if you lean towards that.

That's straight off the top of my head anyway.

Yeah, I have a very specific thing in mind. I guess an element of competition is really the key. Whether it's futuristic race cars with machine guns or just boring baseball. My idea doesn't really have any competitive elements, unless I find a way to tweak it.

I don't wanna be in at all but I can't get this idea out of my head now...

Yeah, I was just checking. There's a big difference between an all female cast in a normal world and an all female cast in a world where males are never seen at all.

There's basically two stories you can tell. A very contained one where you're not showing any of the outside world, or a story where men/women are gone/never existed.
Posted by: CameronD, January 22nd, 2017, 2:19am; Reply: 62
So once again, we can only have casts of either ALL women or ALL men? Even if it's just a background character we can't have it be the opposite sex? It's just a little hard and unrealistic to put the characters out in the real world  without any of the opposite sex around.

For example, kinda difficult  to have the main go out to watch a movie and have the theater be full of just women, even if it is a chick flick, lol. Or to attend a sporting event with only one sex in attendance. I understand the reason for the parameters but if it's just background characters would that be ok?
Posted by: CameronD, January 22nd, 2017, 2:24am; Reply: 63
Ok, read past comments. Damn. Looks like zero tolerance for the opposite sex. Ok, restriction breeds creativity. Gonna have to sleep on this. It's not a huge deal breaker for me so I'll work around it.

i was ill yesterday which drained all creative brain power

but today I'm back and have had an idea...

what strikes me when i think about this is how the reviews will really have to take the genre into account. Some are easier, or more welcome to the reader than others. Rom Com versus slasher. somewhat different.

that will make it an interesting reading challenge judging one against another which in itself is a good idea

Not sure why everyone seems to be struggling so much with this challenge.

It's a shot, peeps!  You don't need stadiums or theaters full of peeps.  You don't need city streets, or buildings full of peeps.

All you really need is 1 character, but usually, a few more help.  If romance is your theme, it will have to be bisexual, or simply discussed, as there's nothing wrong with having peeps talk about the opposite sex.

I think this is a great challenge and I for one, am in!!

Or homosexual which is also acceptable as is asexual as is transexual.

If you'd like, I can give you (specifically) an additional parameter...

Yes please, it may help give me some ideas. At the moment I'm blank.

It's not so much the creative aspect. It's more about the openness is giving me too many options to choose from. It's like saying, pick one movie to watch tonight out of a hundred different movies.

The other aspect is the OWC forces people to write something pretty unique in a short time frame. Although any OWC is open to people using scripts they've written before, the chances are slim given the unique parameters of each one.

With this one, you can use any script you've previously written in that genre and just tweak the character's genders.

Potentially we could have a vomit drafts going up against final drafts of scripts that have been in film festivals and competitions.

Sean,

Not trying to be difficult...

If ones character were to be transgendered. As a biological male, could my protagonist be a female transitioning to male? Or would it have to be a male transitioning to female?

The best thing I can say about that is, I'm not big on having people be disqualified. Just try and stay within the spirit of the rules if there are loopholes.

I'm with you on the first point. I hope no-one does and they shouldn't, it's just a lot easier to do so in this OWC than any other.

On the second point, all my OWC's entries so far have been vomit drafts. Due to my work schedule, I normally only get to start writing the day before it closes (Thursday) and knock one up in about three hours. I never have the time to do a second draft. I imagine quite a few enter vomit drafts.

I've only ever managed two entries in all my time here that weren't vomit drafts.

I rarely even have time to read the script through.

And sorry Don...no transgender stuff please!

If someone is born male but identify as female, that would make them a female character? And vice versa would make them male.

I didn't forget about them, though. My point is, did they need to be female? Over the course of an entire movie, they could've easily pulled that off. Surely, you can do it for 12 pages. =)

Entirely fair question, since we all know about Stevie... but the answer's no. How I look at things, in that respect, is how would the characters be cast if the script were filmed? You know, you wouldn't hire a woman to play Stevie's part (you could, but it would be more of a creative decision).

I was looking forward to writing something since I got a genre I like and I have no problem, IMHO, writing an all male cast. However, four close relatives ended up in the ER, two are awaiting serious surgeries, in just the last week! Four separate incidents in four separate cities. How weird is that? :-/

Any chick wearing denim cutoffs is eligible to play me.   Jeff could write about his Arizona Cards - none of them have any balls!  The Packers too, come to think of it.

Man, don't you just love the toilet when the great flashes of inspiration hit you when sitting on it? Amazing...even at 1215 am after work!

No, Libby, I'm def out on this one. I thought of writing, I even asked Sean for another genre - the first one was sports. Then I immediately regretted it as I got sci-fi next. Well, I tried to write, but the thing that I wrote is a stoner comedy that smells like a pisser. No sci-fi whatsoever. So I'm not submitting.

A few people here have given away their genre. I've been taking notes. ;)

Looks like the female entries (all male characters) are going to be dead give aways. I wonder if I might be the only gal entering now...

IMHO, and I said this to Jeff while on Skype, there are only so many character types, but they all exist in both genders. If you're a guy and think writing female characters are hard, just write an all male script and then tweak them into females when finished. Alien was written for a male lead...we've all seen how that turned out.  :)

Good luck everyone.

It's set in the future. But there's nothing futuristic about it - the theme is clones and whether they are real people.

Yeah, that was one of my thoughts too that it actually could be a comedy.

The plot reminds me of this movie where Robin Williams is a robot and wants to be human:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0182789/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_38

categorized as comedy, drama, sci-fi.

But as I added to my last comment, I think it would qualify. If there's a basement like cloning, it should be accepted as SF as well in the OWC (for my taste).
Posted by: khamanna, January 27th, 2017, 9:13am; Reply: 138
Yeah, Alex, the one with Robin Williams is definitely SF as it's about an android.

Mine is very light on SF compared to this one. Probably would qualify according to some. I'm very lost when it comes to SF. Or sports.

Who knows? The guys might even let the ladies have a speaking part or two in their scripts. Of course, I'm kidding. I like the group of RSVPs that assembled, as it's a highly-talented group. I'm expecting some high-quality scripts across the board and, if not, I'm not going to be upset, I'm just going to be disappointed. =)
Posted by: PrussianMosby, January 27th, 2017, 10:45am; Reply: 144
Actually, I'm not sure about if I should enter anymore. This whole debate about clichés and "how a female character should be in this challenge" is been a killer to me. I have no desire to come along with the hard shit just to hear people scream: you cannot do this because of this and that. My script is so vulnerable in case of being talked into a corner by superficial fake arguments. The main problem is I don't want to let somebody call my integrity toward my work into question.

With some statements, the female writers have definitely not done a favor to me, and I bet a few others in silence think the same.

Actually, I'm not sure about if I should enter anymore. This whole debate about clichés and "how a female character should be in this challenge" is been a killer to me. I have no desire to come along with the hard shit just to hear people scream: you cannot do this because of this and that. Well if you did your job as a writer this shouldn't happen so suck it up.

No one is saying no one enter bc of this or that. I believe we are merely stating that everyone should take full advantage of the opportunity to do something not necessarily in their comfort zone. Me included. This one was very difficult to work on bc I just had no clue how to create a world inhabited by all men....uncharted territory and all.

Also, I certainly don't want any of the guys to think I am going to read their script and deem it unfit simply bc they fall into 'mary-sue' territory, Not that anyone really cares. But I read and judge based off the same mechanics as anyone else.

Relax, Ashlie...just having a little fun.  I merely jest.  No Lesbos in my script.  Hell, I don't think there's more than 1 nipple, even.   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I'm always 'relaxed'.

But my tongue will always remain sharp. Too bad about the nipple, though.  :K)

You know what they say - Sharp tongues cut erect nipples like sharp knives cut frozen butter. Or...uh...is that what they say?  Who is they?  Did anyone ever say this...or even anything like it?

Oh, dear. ::) I see boys will be boys, will be boys.

I do hope there are not going to be a plethora of tacky lesbian themed scripts. Classy, with smart chick dialogue, then yes, for sure, I'll read.  :D

Don't you worry, Ooodles of female class heading your way with mine  :K)

I hope you don't lump my comments in there. My suggestion was to write whatever character you want. Just because they are females doesn't mean they have to be like your sister, mother, girlfriend or daughter. That's why I mentioned Ripley. Not exactly your typical woman, but boy does it work.

My suggestion to anyone who's struggling with their story is to just think up a cool idea for your genre and then build the characters from that. Don't worry so much about gender.

Oh, no I don't think those things. Just I'll need to reread and stuff. And I don't like stoner comedies)) that read like pissers to submit one myself)

And also, I'm actually all for anonymity, I personally don't like knowing who wrote what, so...) but thanks for allowing me to submit.

FUCK ME!!!  That sounds alot like mine, but mine is set in an old Western town, so it's not much of a kitchen, and I tried to make it funny as the 2 babes were engaging each other.

I just need to find a way to wrap this up and have a real bang bang ending...OH SHIT...YES!!!  I'll have them bang each other with a double dong and that should be that.   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I think I did the best I could with the time available.

After a couple days,  and a few reviews,  I am sure I will realise how flawed my script it is, but I tried.

Thanks for the OWC Don, and Sean

A final point...

We all need to be aware of the different genres given out. Some are harder than others, or different. Let's really bear that in mind.

I am going to share a short I was in a few years ago from the 48-hour film festival.
For which, you have to write, shoot, and submit in 48hrs. Proof, that it can be done!

Aww!  :-/ I just had a thought right before you posted this that you might be the dark horse.

Anyway, at least there's two of us (Ashlie and me) by the sounds of it. Would be way worse if only one female writer, which is why my iffy entry is making the cut.

P.S. Zack, it's usually the next day. Last few times Don has posted all pretty darned fast. Clock's not counted down to finish yet though... Mine's not even in yet. :)

How many? I'm assuming you mean what ratio men v women? Cause you gave the 'how many in total thing' away early on, or close to it. Some of us actually do pay attention.  :D

Oh well, doesn't hurt to try, and it'll be clear soon enough... Unless there's a guy writing women characters, writing male characters or vice versa. Don't worry, clearly the hot weather is making me go balmy. My entry has been submitted.

I will endeavour to stay up until midnight, but if I can't and you don't receive confirmation, don't panic.  I will send the final list and such to Sean early tomorrow morning, so it may be as late as Sunday before you see any of the scripts posted.

Before this OWC was announced, I was 50-50 on entering. But three things fell my way.  I had been thinking about a female-driven short for many months;  my winter break from school was extended this year to give me extra weeks of write time;  and I pulled a ‘Random’ genre, thanks to Mr. Blonde.

I have no idea what that kind of alignment means, but this is the most fun I’ve had with a OWC like ever. Considering my track record, not saying much.

Thanks, Don, and Happy New Year to you and your family.

Hey Ashlie, can I get credit for talking you into doing this?  It was you that said you only do feature length, right?  And I said it's a great brain exercise?  Hope you enter...

Good luck to everyone.

After much debate, mostly with myself (it was ugly), I did submit.  Although, I think I submitted to the wrong section.  Guess we'll find out if it shows up.

Mine was about lots of women on the moon who try to make a man.  Please don't ask how they got to the moon.  Creative direction, folks.

Actually, I really did submit.  I am sure I will win.  Win last place.  It's horrible.

As I was rereading what I sent in, I realized I had to cut parts of the script that made the entire idea make sense.  So, yep, the story won't make sense.  This sucks.  A lot...

12 pages, you did me in...

So, I believe in the fairness that I will win last place that we should also have a contest for worst of both.  I'd be in the running...

Perhaps, I just suck...

Off to bed.

I failed. Becoming a common thing. Can't remember the last time I made it.

I had one day to write, but I realised several pages in that my story wasn't really suitable for a short, it was more the opening of a feature.

Well, it wouldn't be the first time a man has taken credit for the work of a woman lol I'm just kidding. I'm actually glad I did this and I have a new appreciation for the form. Maybe my new fav hobby of sorts.

No one failed just like LC mentioned at least you guys tried. The only reason I didn;t fail is because I remembered I was working on something a while back and boom it worked as a short. So we shall see.
