I'm currently working on a new short and I was wondering how much comedy I can get away with and still stay in the dramedy genre.

I'm no expert, but it seems to me, it has more to do with the laughs. In a comedy, you'd want, or a least hope for big laughs, while in a dramedy, you'd want more subdued laughs. Like I said though, I'm no expert.  :)

I think it depends upon the length of your script, and making sure the comedy isn't there just because. I feel
Comedy in any genre other than comedy should be organic to the situation, just don't overdo it.

I think the short answer is - a lot.

To me the key is not so much the amount of drama vs comedy content is it as the over all theme.

Using the TV series MASH vs. F-Troop is an example.

MASH, a very funny series, is still a dramedy because the backdrop of the story is clearly the Korean War and the tragedies that go along with it. F-Troop is merely a comedy because, despite being set in a German prisoner camp, the war backdrop is nearly completely missing.

So there is definitely a few ways I can approach this.

A serious setting with a slight hint of comedy or I can go all out as long as I keep it within the lines of a drama.

Thank you all for the great insight.
