Kind of shocked no one has reviewed this yet.

I have been looking forward to it, based on early trailers.  Reviews and BO have been abysmal, but I always like to give movies a chance.

Sorry, there's no chance here at all.  I'm actually shocked and appalled how bad this actually turned out.  I really feel badly for everyone involved here, as well as Universal, who was hoping to open up a whole new world of their legendary monsters.

First of all, the tone is completely off here...or maybe I should say, the tone fluctuates back and forth between light hearted comedy and what is most likely supposed to be horror - neither really works.

Secondly, we have some very strange goings on here, with main characters who aren't even alive - in a way like the classic American Werewolf in London - but here, it's much more than that and really makes almost no sense.

Speaking of sense, WTF is supposed to be going on here, anyways?  I really don't know and I wonder if anyone involved with the production really knew.  It's all just a mishmash of BS, thrown together to introduce us to this "Dark Universe".

Finally, let me bring up a major, major issue that just shocks me that no one realized how dumb this would look.  Our titular "Mummy" is a babe and a half, and is actually nude in several scenes, but the majority of her screen time, she's wearing what is obviously some kind of skin suit, including bra that looks just silly.

Avoid at all costs, although there are some "cool" scenes and shots.  This is one of those flicks where basically everything seemed to go wrong, and alot of money and time was wasted.

I actually didn't mind this as much as I thought I would. Now, before you throw any peanuts or cabbages, let me explain...

I went in with very low expectations. I knew it was going to be bad. The story is weak, Tom Cruise is forgettable and his role could have been played by anybody except for his signature stunt work, the portrayal of the female costar hits every regrettable cliché for a woman's role in a Hollywood film with no agency, and Russell Crowe...I wasn't impressed by his character or his performance. By all accounts, it should have been abysmal to watch.

And yet, I found it to be a fun movie. Despite the groans, eye rolls, and head shakes, it's an action flick that's visually appealing, fast-paced, and the baddie is fun to watch. It also succeeds in setting up the Dark Universe, to the extent that the groundwork is laid but I wouldn't want the other films to follow in this one's footsteps.

If you decide to see it, check your brain at the door and enjoy the ride. Just don't see it in 3D, it's a waste of money. You lose nothing seeing it in 2D.

Looks like they wrote they wrote the story around f/x scenes, like the airplane one.

I guess chicks aren't too sexy after they've been mummified.

The first thing that stood out for me was the rather terrible beginning. I know from personal experience if I ever submit a script for feedback to any competition or film festival, and said script starts off with a voice over and flashbacks telling the whole backstory, then I'm going to get panned hard.

The script is going to get rejected, I'm going to get told this backstory should be discovered naturally by the protagonist on their journey in a natural and engaging way. I should show, not tell. I should use subtext etc. Basically I shouldn't do it and if I felt like I had to, I had no other choice, it should be as brief as possible; like a few lines of text displayed as a SUPER before the FADE IN.

The Mummy is not only is guilty of this but it goes on for about 5 minutes. It feels like an eternity. When Tom Cruise finally turns up and the action kicks in, it's good stuff but there was no need at all for this long, drawn out exposition.

The other bad element that is apparent is you can tell a lot of effort has gone into using this film to setup the Dark Universe franchise they are planning. While some of the mechanisms for this show potential (Russell Crowe's character for example) the story they are attempting to tell in this film suffers in my opinion. The lessons for the writer here is the main story is the most important factor to focus on. You have a massive backstory, great! You have ideas for sequels and an entire franchise; nice! But tell this one first. Don't sacrifice the first story attempting to setup the rest.

The movie itself is quite entertaining with the some impressive action sequences. However, I do prefer the Brendon Fraser version(s). That one knew it wasn't really being serious and had a lot of fun elements. This came across well with audiences. The new Mummy tries to be darker, more horror based yet it doesn't quite work as they don't go far enough. The brief nudity and gore which earns this movie its 15 certificate seems fleeting. If you want go the horror route, then go for it Penny Dreadful style. If not then go for the lighter comedy action. Trying to do a bit of both doesn't quite work, not for this Mummy anyway.

While this movie wasn't any good, it wasn't THAT bad.

It still hasn't opened in some markets like Japan. So, when all is said and done it would have probably made over 400 mil. While disappointing for a movie of this magnitude, they'll probably won't lose money on it. So, I wouldn't call it a flop either.

However, Universal has to question themselves how marketable this Dark Universe really is?
