In my ongoing quest to watch the so called best of the year, saw this one last night.

Some nice genuine moments between mother and daughter, father and daughter, daughter and high school friends. However, sadly, not much of a story here - at least not one that's worth framing a motion picture around. It ends with a whimper - you know the ones - at the ninety minute mark the screen goes to black - you turn to your loved one and say - "wait, that' it - that can't be it."

The credits start to roll and you know that's it. "What the fuck - that's it.?????

Thought it was good, not great. It's the type of film I as a 50 year old had grown up on. This was the norm - characters and story - so I'm not sure why it generated so much buzz.

I think the universality, though the film was very well done, was pretty niche. And I think that was reflected in the lack of awards - it came out with such Oscar buzz, and then it was scaled back.

GREAT performances from Ronan and Metcalf though.

At the risk of being immodest, I think I'm currently shopping a coming-of-age drama with wider appeal...

Yeah, pretty much the same as you guys. Felt like this decade's "Little Miss Sunshine".

Yeah, its feeling like an echo chamber in here. I thought it was ok too, surprisingly ordinary.

I enjoyed the mother/daughter relationship and the titular character but everything else felt very familiar from other films; the waaaay too nice and understanding dad, hipster, aloof cool guy in a band, big hearted friend, snobby popular girl, etc.

It liked any originality which I thought Gerwig would bring to it given her specific and singular presence in other films.

Disappointing...but are we perhaps the wrong audience? i.e older males
