Seriously? No one has seen this yet?

Went to see this one today and I have to say I thought it was a GREAT action thriller. So many times in the last several years I start to watch films in the same genre, but I'm always disappointed. Usually, they are so over the top I just roll my eyes and give up.

This one has some seriously great action scenes. I'm amazed how they could pull it off and still make it feel like it could be real.

Pretty much every scene had a twist or two or three in it. Every scene! Something that made me think my own scenes are dull and pointless.

There were some heartfelt moments, but they were not overdone to the point where they felt sappy or tried to manipulate your feelings.

There was also the classic bomb countdown. In fact, there were several times while I watched this that it brought me back to the good old 007 days.

And then there's Tom Cruise. What can I say. Love him or hate him, I personally love him, you have to admire him for his physique if nothing else. He does most of the stunts himself. How many 56 year old men do you know that can do what he does and look good too? Very admirable.

Great movie! A must see in my opinion if you like this type of movie. I will even say it was good enough that you don't need to bother buying any popcorn or a drink, because you'll forget you have it.  8)

I don't think a movie has given me so much anxiety with its action scenes than this one.

And that shot when they cut the bomb's wire was a punch in the gut. Super editing/directing there.

And can I just say: Henry Cavill with a mustache. Swoon.

He reminded me of Rik Mayall in Black Adder goes fourth.

Not my kind of film, but I have to admit, the finale was genuinely spectacular, even with all the marketing and preemptive hype. It shouldn't have worked, even with the film consciously leaning into how ludicrous the scenario is, but it did, which makes it feel all the more triumphant. As gimmicky as it sounds, I think a lot of the effectiveness is due to Cruz handling his own stunts. For one thing, the camera has to show it's clearly him in action, which means the filmmakers can't cut away as readily. Plus when you see his face, it's stricken with panic and intent where you're normally used to seeing an actor trying to look cool (because, you know, it's a film). The direction notwithstanding, it was these little details that really sold the action for me.

As for the film itself, for someone who has zero interest in the franchise, I did enjoy this one more than the previous entry. My only real complaint was that it was too long. It was really, really cheesy, but the filmmakers know it (I'm assuming the audience does too) so I suppose they're somewhat off the hook. It is, of course, based on a TV show from the 60s, and in these last two entries, it shows, big time. Fans should be thrilled.
