Well, here's the new Jeremy Saulnier movie, and it's quite a trip, to say the least.

I didn't know what to expect going in and after watching, I don't really know much more, as the "plot" here, is...well...I guess it's the kind of movie in which each viewer can try and explain exactly what's going on and why, in their own opinion.

We've got the always excellent Jeffrey Wright and Alexander Skarsgard in remote, Northern Alaska in a twisty ultra violent thriller in which the story and plot are most likely much more than we're actually shown.

This is based on the 2014 novel by William Giraldi, which I am not familiar with, but I have to imagine that things are made much more clear in the novel, than they are in the film.

The scenery and cinematography are absolutely beautiful.  The violence is seriously top notch and downright shocking.  The performances are strong, yet subtle.  And the overall mood is mysterious, supernatural, and rather strange and unnerving.

I have my feelings about what this was really about, but I bet others may think completely differently, or that this is as simple as it plays out on screen.

Either way, this is something to see for yourself.  Some may find it slow and too hard to follow, while others, namely Jeremy Saulnier fans, will see this as a masterpiece.

For me, it's good, but left me wanting much more in terms of explanations.

Got to be honest, I really didn’t follow what was going on. I enjoyed the violence but I couldn’t get a grasp on the story.

Yep, totally agree.  As I said, I have my thoughts, and IMO, the wolves have an awful lot more to do with the Slone family than was revealed in the movie.  There were several references made that weren't really developed, but IMO...

...well...that wouldn't be fair to spoil anything for others.   ;D ;D ;D ;D

Let's just say, I think there's alot more to the Slone family than we actually saw.

I thought the reviews were pretty decent, actually.  For a DTV, they spent some money for sure, got some relative star power, and delivered a quirky movie that I bet alot will really like.

Lol I googled this and read the entire plot. Halfway through I lost track of what it was about

Disappointing, ridiculous, muddling, violent, nonsensical bleak rubbish.

Great talent, in Jeffrey Wright, Riley Keough, Alexander Skarsgård.
Great visuals, great atmosphere, great wolves!

Pity.

I am all for bleak rubbish. However, this movie contained violence that was just there for the sake of showing violence.

I'm going to have to give it a thumbs down.

We turned it off about half way through. Maybe I should go back and watch again.

I watched half. It was well into the a.m., and I'd just watched another movie (Mandy), which ran long itself. Decided I'd pick this up later, which I haven't yet.

Not bad, but I read Jeff's review beforehand and was surprised to find that I was on board with most of what he said (I thought I'd fall into the Saulnier fanboy trap). The plot did start to come apart for me a way's into the first half. It didn't bother me per se, but I did start to have trouble following, which didn't subside as of where I stopped.

It was also noticeably slow and a little too busy. Saulnier's been noted for his slow burn before, but his previous films are all pretty punchy and direct compared to this one. I wonder if that doesn't have something to do with the fact that this wasn't original material from him. Not to overpraise his writing, but this felt noticeably dense, very much like it's based on a novel (as it is).

I won't say much more. That I'm "reviewing" half a movie is not lost on me, which is perhaps not fair. I will say that I was totally on board with the cast, the atmosphere, and the way the violence was handled. Also, "bleak" is usually a positive for me, so no issues there. I was especially stoked to see Jeffrey Wright in a leading role. I'll make a point of finishing what I started here.
