Interesting theory. Currently, it is believed by scientists that the Earth rotates due to material that crashed into it as the planet was forming. The sun's gravity holds the planet in place, meaning it spins rather than shoots off in a straight line.
To be honest, though, that sounds like a load of bollocks to me too. Maybe it is mothers after all.
