Welcome to Round 1. At this moment, you are all equal. Now, comes the fun part. Keep in mind that the location and object should be integral to your script (the script can't exist without them), but that doesn't mean your entire script has to take place in that location or that object has to appear in every scene.

For this round, there's a little extra trick to make things harder on all of you.

Genre: Fusion.

Location: Psychiatrist's Office.

Object: Bobblehead Doll.

Now, what does "fusion" mean in this case? There are four genres which will appear in rounds 2-5: Action, Comedy, Horror, Sci-Fi. Your task, in round 1, is to fuse two (only two) of those together for this script.

To avoid questions regarding this topic, I made this list:

Horror-Comedy - Shaun of the Dead
Horror-Action - Aliens
Horror-Sci-Fi - Alien
Action-Comedy - Beverly Hills Cop
Action-Sci-Fi - The Matrix
Sci-Fi-Comedy - Men in Black

Good luck.

Ohhhh...glad I stumbled into my office.

Funny, cuz I had no clue it was starting right now.  HA!
OK< I'm buzzed, and I have nothing but time...no kids, no commitments, free free =, set me free.

I'll get something in that Warren is going to love!   ;D ;D ;D

Got a fully formed story scribbled down in my notebook. Quite happy with it at the moment. Will see how it looks when I turn it into a script on Monday.

Now I can spend the next day and a bit massaging the story in my head.

Thought I was going to struggle a bit more with the criteria but something came to me pretty quickly. I'm not saying it's great but it will definitely do for this round.

You should shit this challenge in bro  I hear you’ve had lots of experience and action with realistic bobble head dolls.  And I imagine the video of it is bordering on horror/comedy  :'( ;D

So, all of it has to happen in the psychiatrist office? Or the major part of it?
Posted by: Scar Tissue Films, June 1st, 2019, 8:05am; Reply: 14
It has to play a key role, so that the script wouldn't work without it, but doesn't have to be exclusively in the office.

Am I allowed to get weird with the bobblehead doll? Lol

What I mean is... Does it need to be a traditional bobblehead, or can it be something a little stranger that strongly resembles a bobblehead doll? I'm being vague, I know. But I don't want to out myself.

Bobblehead doll is pretty specific. It either is or it isn't. Use your discretion, but be wary others may not see it that way in their reviews.

I'm not in this... but, come on, it's a bobblehead doll... it will be some kind of doll with a bobbly head. Even if it's a lion doll with a bobbly head, it's a bobblehead doll.

You're giving your script away more and more. Why couldn't you have just written the script without asking? Your question hasn't been answered and you're going to do it anyway... so what was the point?

Could just be misdirection.  :P  And Sean more or less did answer the question for me.

Though in hindsight, I probably should of just ran with it. Oh well. Asking dumb questions is one of my major character flaws. ;D

In case anyone was wondering:

bob·ble·head

noun: bobblehead; plural noun: bobbleheads; noun: bobblehead doll; plural noun: bobblehead dolls; noun: bobble-head; plural noun: bobble-heads; noun: bobble-head doll; plural noun: bobble-head dolls

a figurine with a disproportionately large head mounted on a spring so that it bobs up and down, often made as a caricature of a famous person.

Is it just me or isn't "psychiatrist office" originally screaming drama?

I got a theme but have to push a certain scenario inside to hit on genre. Ah… just shit-chatting of me. It's do or die I guess. I'm not a restriction guy as some may know, always on the other side, so I got another question, Sean,,,, you know what you demand regarding a two genre script within that bubble head therapist thing ;-) damn

I'm going to let this marinade for a while but, when it's ready, where's the link to submit?

Good chunk done. Thanks for doing this Mr. Blonde! First script I've written in years, having fun. I ran into a weird slug situation, can't ask Jeff til after the voting though. I don't think anyone will notice it. Lost my FD, so using Scrivener. Kind of a pain because you can't even tell what page you're on, and forget about orphans., you can't tell until you convert to PDF. But having fun. About to crack a Tullamore Dew on the rocks.

As great as my mystical, magical powers are, that is one which is beyond the scope of them. However, today is the first day I haven't had to work since April, so I'm happy to update this thread once an hour with a makeshift countdown clock, if you'd like. Not a problem.

Submitted, that was not an easy task. And it doesn't look barely as good in script format than it did when it was just scribbled down in my notepad.

I feel like there is a fairly obvious story and genre combination to take, I'll be interested to see how many people head in the same or similar direction.

At the very least I think there will be an overwhelming number that are the same genre.

Good luck everyone, though challenge for sure.

Quick funny story, as I prepare to throw down...

Literally less than 10 minutes ago, I decided to run my idea on Teri, my girlfriend...as some of you know, that didn't go well the last few OWC's.

So, I started and within 15 seconds, she grabbed a file and started filing her nails.  As I continued, I paused at each important revelation...waited for a response...got none, and continued on.

When i finished, she said, "I don't think you should spend alot of time on it".  I asked why, and she repeated what she said, got up, and as she went inside, she said I have no idea what you just said and didn't get any of it.

So, there we go...

I'll write it now and submit and wait for the bashing to begin...

Submitted. I like the story I came up with, but man was it tough getting it all into 5 pages. Let's just say I'm not expecting rave reviews. ;D

This sucks. I'm really happy with what I wrote, which means you're all going to hate it. Dammit.

Submitted.

BTW, when I went to submit, it said "Script submissions are closed for the Writers' Tournament." Kinda freaked me out thinking I was too late. You might want to check your wording!

So will the writers be revealed at the end of each round or at the end of the tournament?

The writers for each script will be revealed after the voting for that round ends. The scores will remain private until the end, but will be added to each script individually, as well as the overall scores added to the leaderboard.

So Blondie when the scripts are up, we read and review till the next round right? So we have 3 days for that then rd 2 starts Sat arve Oz time? Is that how it goes down?

To vote for round 1, you have until round 2's voting starts. For example, if you finish round 2's script early or don't like the topic, you can still review Saturday, Sunday and Monday. The full seven days.

Submitted with a whole 23 minutes to go. It's not as polished as I would have liked, but it's done. The kids' beach day really ate up my time.

As usual, my title sucks. And my logline sucks. Why do I always forget I need to think about those things?

Now, I've got to get my comedy head on, I suppose.

Got my little scoring table set up.

This is not a criticism in any way, good concept for a tournament! Just a general observation about the problem with scoring by category.

I can conceive of some talented writer crafting the perfect script, yet scoring very low on dialog. For example, comedy is much more conducive to showing dialog prowess. Some stories by nature have limited dialog, and to try to spruce up the dialog would ruin the story. In those stories, sparse dialog is the perfect dialog, but it won't really showcase what the writer can do and won't score high.

Again, it's not a criticism. No matter how you break down the categories you can run into that.

Here is the best retort I can muster and I'm so glad you picked dialogue because this will be the easiest one for me to explain.

If you read a script with no dialogue, would you grade it as a 1 or a 5?

People like to look at dialogue as "good" or "bad". I don't believe in that logic. I've had way too many conversations with people that a lot of reviewers would say is bad and it reads false because they don't think anybody actually talks like that.

Instead, I categorize it as "necessary" and "unnecessary". There's no rule which say your script has to have dialogue. If you have a no dialogue script, but you still understand everything and every character's motivation, knowing that putting dialogue in would be a bad idea because you don't need it would probably result in a score of 5 for me.

Dialogue only works if it's necessary, no matter how good or bad it is. Otherwise, it's just fluff. But, that's why I like doing this kind of thing because you'll see people disagreeing on what they believe is necessary, unnecessary, good, bad, etc. and that starts a discussion and, as long as it remains civil, hopefully everybody learns a little something.

^^ That's bad dialogue. I didn't need to write that much. The real answer is score it how you feel. =)

Great point, Sean, and that's the way it should work. But I doubt it would. I suspect a script with no dialog might get a 3...not a 1, but not a 5 either.

There's no perfect way to do categories. The only writing contest I used to care about was Nicholls. But the last time a did Nicholls, several years ago, they let out that they had, I think, 7 scoring cats. And one was "character growth". Which was a problem for me that year.

I usually build growth into my main character. But there is a whole other type of story that many gurus forget. It's the one where there is tremendous pressure on the hero to change, but where she must resist this pressure if she is to succeed. Her strength in this inspires others to change. Think Luke of Star Wars. Yes, he does mature into a adult, but the main pressure on him is to become selfish like Han Solo. He has to resist that. And because he does, it is Han Solo that changes.

I couldn't enter that script, the best one I had ever written, into Nicholls because of that. If you lose a couple points in Nicholls scoring you're out.

Anyway, I love your point.
