Probably better than I expected. I reckon the biggest problem amateur comedy has, outside of Spoof/Parody, is its failure to create situations that are relatable to the experience of the reader/audience.

I read some of the pro comedies on this site before trying my hand at the script. The thing that stood out for me was that they open with stuff that everyone can relate to...Ace Ventura and a UPS guy delivering packages in a comedic way...we can all relate to the way fragile stuff is delivered, American Pie and the mother walking in on a teenagers bedroom habits. Even if you've not experienced it yourself, you can still relate to the awkwardness.

That's the biggest thing I would say the Pre Pro comedy writers miss: Grounding the story in relatable human experience. That's my two cents on the matter.

Good job all.

Personally, I'm inclined to say it's a 100% criteria pass on this one.

Sean, thanks for putting it together, thats a lot of fun.

If someone could remind me what it was before I start reading that would be great. I mean the parameters we vote on - criteria, dialog story, the last one cant remember

Easier to keep your notes in the same order as the score sheet:

Criteria (1 or 5)
Story
Characters
Dialogue
Prose

I'm ready to start reading.

For me, if it's an attempt at comedy and a whistle is included in the script, it immediately gets the 5 points.

I don't care if it's not funny, and I definitely don't care if it's a pisser.

That's why I was so surprised to see so many did not meet criteria scores in round 1 from everyone. I expected a bit more leeway, but this is a learning process like last year.

All good points, excellent observations. However, that's hard to do...a) in 72 hours, and b) in a sewer.

A pro script has been through many drafts and had feedback and development. I'm not in any way knocking the parameters. I just think readers have to go into it with a proper mindset. I think the last comedy I watched was a spoof about two convicts who escape from prison but are at each other's throat. Not sure how identifiable that is for too many people.

Early versions of many famous comedies are not very funny. There's a humorous concept at the core, and some characters with great potential, and it gets expanded on.

I'm not at all arguing Rick's point. It's a good one and I agree with it. I think the last two funny pro features I read was one of the Mean Moms scripts(it didn't get made) and The Heat(Melissa McCarthy). Both were funny scripts that did have relatable characters.

I do think some writers were really hunting for reasons to dismiss. I think maybe next time if criteria could be ranked 1 thru 5 too. For example, I think dismissing a script because the bobblehead wasn't absolutely essential to the story is kind of harsh. It's easy to make a bobblehead prominent, but not easy to make it "essential". And in some stories it was essential to the point of making a serious story seem absurd.

Since no one has submitted scores for round 2, there is still time to update the score sheet.  We could do criteria:  DNS (did not score) 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Let me know.

Agree on waiting until next round to change the parameters. And, I agree it's a good idea to do so. That said, if you change them for this round... please hurry. I don't want to have to go back and reread everything for a new scoring element.

I'm about a third of the way through the scripts. (Enjoying this round's scripts so far. A couple of standouts, and the rest are fun in their own ways.)

Kind of surprised at alot of the feedback, but then again, I'm sure most are "surprised" by my feedback.

Very little comedy in most of these, but many that actually do have comedy front and center aren't getting positive posts.

I really think most peeps here don't know what constitutes various genres, which is very strange.

5 more to go for me...I think I'll save mine for last.  HA!!!

Have to say... my feedback is all over the place for these first two rounds. I'm hoping to tighten it up going forward, but for whatever reason I'm having a tough time getting a handle on things this go round.

I look at my scores... it's not the usual pattern I see for myself. Weird. Feels like a bigger spread than normal.

I would like the scoring system to remain consistent throughout the tournament. If it needs to be changed or altered, it'll be for future tournaments.

I'm surprised at some things people are surprised about.

Why are people surprised that other reviewers found a script funny that they did not? - or vice versa - Surely comedy is the genre that most splits opinions as humour is such a broad spectrum.

Why are people surprised that a lot of writers struggle with writing comedy? It's a board for amateur and unrepresented writers with a wide range of experience and skills across all different genres - It's not surprising at all - I can't write comedy, I'm not funny... I've never researched or studied how to do it, so it's not surprising to me that my script this round is bombing on the comedy front.

Anyhoo... I've enjoyed most of these entries so far - Well done all

I base my judgement not only on my own tastes but also include everything I've seen. Some people like Mrs Brown's Boys and others will prefer Ben Elton. Just because I find it funny doesn't mean that others will. Also, if the writer finds it funny, it stands to reason that others will somewhere. Comedy is so subjective it's too difficult to label what is and isn't funny.

Also, something we find funny at one moment, may pass us by on another depending on our mood. It's very easy to hate on a script in this round simply because you're not in the mood to find something funny. The writers should all be more forgiving of each other during this round.
Posted by: Warren, June 12th, 2019, 5:53am; Reply: 32
There are many I didn't find funny this round, some I did. Those I didn't were scored on the basis of me seeing the attempts at comedy.

So far, and I think I only have 3 left to read, I've only marked one as not being a comedy. I genuinely could not even see the attempts. I'll give it another read before I submit my scores, but I don't think I could have been any more forgiving.

If I only passed the ones I found funny that number would be much different.

I think everyone had a pretty good crack at the genre, even if they didn't quite get there.

Agreed - In all the of the entries I have read so far I have seen at least an attempt at comedy, whether it worked for me personally or not. Some are a lot more in your face slapstick, others have a more subtle comedic tone - but I haven't penalized any for lack of attempt.

I only have 1 question mark next to 'criteria' for my scoring - but has nothing to do with genre, it's for the use of sewer and whistle.

There are definitely some dropped marks for criteria... is genre under the criteria section for marking?
Posted by: DustinBowcot (Guest), June 12th, 2019, 6:03am; Reply: 35
Never mind. I suppose it would have to be. How would you give 3 points for only being partly action?

Yes it is. But criteria is also a yes (5) or a no (1). So you only need to not have one of the pieces to potentially get a no.
Posted by: ReneC, June 12th, 2019, 9:11am; Reply: 37
Comedy isn't about making you laugh. It can do that, but it doesn't have to to fit the genre. The Blues Brothers didn't make me laugh, but the over-the-top antics were fun. The Big Lebowski didn't make me laugh once, but it's a fun ride (I might have chuckled).

Comedy is meant to be fun, not necessarily funny. It's meant to surprise, catch us off guard. It can poke fun at things, even ourselves. It can tear down the most horrible things by making them absurd, and hopefully those make us laugh for the catharsis.
Posted by: DustinBowcot (Guest), June 12th, 2019, 9:22am; Reply: 38
I didn't mean that funny made me laugh. Perhaps, I like to think of them as 'inward chuckles'. I wrote a comedy using dry wit. You're not meant to laugh but you are meant to find it funny. I suppose this is just semantics.... but I can find things funny without them making me laugh.

The definition of funny says: causing laughter or amusement.

Reading and commenting on 21 scripts, while writing, and working, and taking care of family, and mowing the lawn... isn't an easy task. So, I try to be forgiving in reading reviews of my stuff. That said... I can't tell you how many times I've read a review and wanted to scream "It's on page 1!" (I even did it this round.) Not to pick on anybody... because they provide excellent reviews... but, last challenge someone commented: "You really should help us with the time frame of these events." I literally had EXACT dates on page one: Christmas and February 18th. Exact.

Knowing they're a good writer and reviewer, I knew they just missed it. Not on purpose. Not out of stupidity. They just missed it. Sucks that it affects scores... but, thems the apples.

No doubt I do it regularly too. And, yes... I've even seen you do it. :) (Probably. Who knows. I'm just making things up now.)

Read the comments.  Several came right out and said they had to bale...or skim.

In an OWC, that's perfectly fine, as you can give the script a score of ZERO...or 1, based on whatever you want to base it on.

This challenge is different, as there are 5 categories, each with a possible 5 points.  If yuo skim or literally stop reading, you cannot score them accurately...no way possible.

True, you've managed to power through them during this tournament so far. How admirable. It's still shitty to call out people for not getting things you're finding obvious when you haven't gotten a lot of things in OWCs that other people got just fine.

1. Disagree. There are multiple options available. One being DNS.
2. If you think calling people out for not finishing scripts is appropriate, given your history... well, more power to you. But, you'll all have to forgive us for having a good laugh at your expense.

I don't find it "shitty" at all, really.  It is what it is.  If something is wrong, it's wrong, and should be pointed out.  If it's not wrong, calling it out is wrong.

When I make a mistake, I apologize, and thank the person who let me know...whether it's on my own work or a comment I made.  I don't see anyone ever doing that.

I'm here to entertain, and if you feel it's at my own expense, that's OK with me.

I made a very general statement and did not call anyone out by name.  It's merely an observation.

Peeps read very quickly, and spend very little time on their comments and critique...that is very clear.

I had one reader say the bobblehead wasnt essential to my story in round one. Which was true, you could have replaced it with a puppet or doll. But now that I see what script is his, the same could be said: the bobblehead could be replaced by...I won't say, that would give it away.

There was a wide range of stories so everyone should find something they love.
Hats off to you all

I'm not going to guess writers this round, I'll just give things away lol

Oh, no one here would call me kind! My review comments said pretty much the same thing I just did. This was one of 3 scripts I gave an N on criteria, and it STILL scored higher than any of the others on my board.
Posted by: leitskev, June 13th, 2019, 1:29pm; Reply: 73
I just read a script that tries something outside the box. And that's what OWC type events should be all about. What better place to experiment? No, I don't know who the writer is.

But this is what he did: he used a flashback memory in which he saw himself as muscle city, but in reality he looked nothing like that, and we don't realize it til the flash ends.

Did the writer pull it off? Maybe not quite. I'm not sure the contrast was great enough. The viewing audience might be confused. They might think he USED to be muscle city.

I once saw a cartoon drawing that showed a fat, middle age man daydreaming at his desk. In his dream, he's a knight in shining armour fighting a dragon. This reminded me of that.

I'm sure in the long history of film everything has been done. But I myself never thought of this, so the writer stretched my mind a little, and it's much appreciated. We have to open to some mind stretching!

Just did my score card   Gave them all a Yes for criteria but most scored low in most categories   Only one script received a 4 vote in any department.

This may be harsh but only a couple of the pissers gave me genuine laughs. The writing in several was very good however.  It was a tough challenge

Sean, one suggestion and don't know if it's even possible.  The first and second round scripts were starting to get jumbled and scripts from the second round were starting to fall to the second page as people were commenting on their first round scripts.  Can the third round scripts be put in a separate thread?  Just makes it easier to follow.  If the third round is mixed with the first two rounds, I'm afraid some scripts might get overlooked if writers comment on previous rounds scripts.  Maybe this is much ado about nothing.  I'm just all about reducing clutter if possible!

I would suggest using the first post in the "Round N Scripts" thread and just use that as your list o' links. Pretty sure that's what people mean when they are "going from top to bottom" or "going from bottom to top".

Gary, good advice from Frank.

Example: Click top of SS page - heading says Round 2 scripts are up.
Click on it, you get:

https://www.simplyscripts.net/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?b-Tourney19/m-1560227314/

You probably know this already...
It gives you a Master List to work off.

Things can get jumbled otherwise. :)

We have until the submission deadline for Round 3 scripts. A couple of people even handed theirs in late this time around, though I don't know if there was any penalty attached to that.

In any event, you have until 11:59PM Eastern Daylight Time on Monday for scoring.

I wrote the script that had 1 or more characters, some or all took place in some form of a sewer, and had some take on a whistle, and at least 1/2 an attempt at some form of comedy.

That's all I can say at this point.

I'm neither for nor against anything like that. Those are technical things which I have no access to. Pass it up the chain, see if Don's into it.

Quoted from Dreamscale
Don't worry about them...they love the extra work.   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Admittedly, I really don't have anything better to do. Don, on the other hand, actually has a life.

Quoted from Zack
So are we allowed to start guessing yet?

Guess whenever you like. Just don't confirm until Tuesday.

I think Jeff wrote Gym Coaches Blow.

I'm positive Zack wrote 1 of these scripts.

I also am pretty sure Kevin write 1 of these.

Other than that, I have no idea.

Here goes:

Coming Up Roses - Paul
Underneath The Streets Of New York - Kham
Rats of a Feather - Rene
Henry Schmidt: A Tosser's Tale - Richard
The Foul Case of the Feculent Fiend - Matthew
Whistle While You Twerk - I'm thinking Zack, but could be Jeff

Not very sure of any of those this time around, but thought I'd have a crack.

I think Whistle While You Twerk is Zack cause of a telltale thing that Jeff would never do - even if he was trying to deflect detection.

Whistling in the Dark : Kev

That's the only one I know for sure.

I may have written this or maybe I didn't, but I did put many telltale things in several scripts that I may have handed off to others to throw you all off on what I did write. or maybe I said fuck it and didn't even enter 1 this round, being in 17th place and all.

Underneath the Streets of New York should be Frank

but thank you for assigning it to me. It's a good one. I would love to have it.

Didn't leave a couple of reviews but done. Finally.

Two all fivers and two all fours.
The rest are average and like three are on the lower side.

That's an unexpected turnaround as you all complained about your bad scripts and all. Liers.

I think we all know the winner of this round, just based on the reviews.

It'll be interesting to see where the others end up, though.

Really?  I have no clue which on will win...but again, I'm old and out of touch with what's hip and cool.

For me, there are 2 scripts tat stand out, and, no, is not mine, but we'll see if the rat pack votes anywhere near what I think it should be.

My guess - the one with no dialogue and all the songs - Kev.

Yes. But for me, it's tied with Coming up Roses. Unfortunately not every reviewer thinks the same.

Coming up Roses is so clever. Once again people are crazy. Well, at least it'll end up on top.

Wasn't for me, that one. I thought there were several stronger entries.

Hopefully, nowhere near the top...very poor entry...but maybe I wrote it and am just trying to fool you all.

Not It - Zack
The Foul Case of the Feculent Fiend - Anthony
Rats - Warren
Crappy Job - Frank
The Quest for the Red Boat - Kham

Your turn, Matt...

Man, I hate to be a pain in the ass, but once again I have no idea where to vote, and I am freaking pressed for time. I've just searched several spots to no avail. And I have to leave early in the morning.

The writers should be known tomorrow. Don may, or may not, provide scores tomorrow. If not, I'll update them when I'm finished calculating. Certainly before the next round topic is announced.

Now can I say... I can’t believe nobody commented on my script’s useless quest for a mug guarded by a dog named Blondie.

Thought I’d at least get a shout out from Kham for heeding her call to name a character after Sean!

I thought for sure someone would at least give me some crap for it.

You know, it seemed odd at the time but that got lost in all the other juicy stuff to comment on.  ;)
