First off - I have never done a review before, so this isn't really a review. I just need a quick rant.

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

Being a huge sci-fi fan, I have been looking for a good series to get into for a while now. So when I opened up Netflix and saw this pop up I let out a squeal of excitement - after that the only noises I made were groans and yawns.

It is created by Aaron Martin (no idea who he is), but to me, it feels like he has watched too many sci-fi series filling his head with cliches and tropes and can no longer have an original idea of his own. Either that or he has just picked an 'off-the-shelf' blueprint.

The opening is interesting - an alien ship crashes into earth, turns into some big diamond looking mountain and starts sending signals into space. Here the story splits in two, the story in space and the story on Earth.

The Earthside is dull, there's a breakthrough that gets them excited but I didn't share in it as I haven't been told the relevance or implications of this breakthrough - most of the time I saw the guy he was just kneeling in front of the alien structure, staring at it while his annoyingly impatient boss stood behind him repeating "this isn't working" - on a side note, why isn't this a bigger deal? I'm assuming this is the first time they have had alien contact (No idea, I haven't been told) but theres no indication of how the world sees this generally, they don't seem overly scared, the thing isn't well guarded from the general public and at one point the guy brings his kid to it - too much tunnel vision on the two main characters to the detriment of the wider world we are in - the stakes are not high enough for me to really get invested (Sackhoff every now and then screams that everyone on Earth is in danger, what danger? I don't feel it)

The spaceside is mostly a space travel cliche full of annoying characters - The plot, crew and relationship dynamics swing so much in the first episode it is jarring, I feel like I couldn't get my feet firmly on the ground to get into it - the rug kept getting pulled from beneath me. They crammed way too many story and character beats into the first episode with insufficient buildup and quickly dispersed fallout.

The dialogue, at times, made me roll my eyes - some of the lesser characters dialogue, when they talk, is just grating.
I will say at this point though that the hologram character played by Samuel Anderson (if you are a Doctor Who fan, you will recognize him) is by far the most interesting.

I think people will watch this purely for the fact that Katee Sackhoff is staring in a new sci-fi - but ultimately I think most people will be let down by it.

I mean, if you like Sci-fi then watch it and see for yourself - I may just be bitter because I wanted to be blown away, and I wasn't.

I was really looking forward to it as well as Katee Sackhoff, but the reviews so far have been really bad. Not just mixed, but absolutely abysmal. It can't be that bad, can it? I'm kind of just looking for a decent sci-fi popcorn show.

I didn't even know it was in the works, so I didn't have an exciting build-up - and I was still disappointed lol

Don't let me put you off though - see it for yourself. I think I have been waiting so long for a decent Sci-fi to really binge on that I was pissed when I realized this was not what I had been waiting for.

Maybe I went into it expecting BSG but it ended up being more Galactica 1980

Aaron Martin is the creator of the surprisingly excellent Netflix show, "Slasher".

There are 3 seasons and each is well worth watching.

Agreed on all counts. Huge BSG fan and I was psyched when it popped up on my email as well. I only got about 20 minutes into the first episode before I called it quits. Just horrible OTN dialogue and ridiculous characters.

BUT... let's see what Amazon does with The Boys! That series was released today and it looks fantastic!

Yes! I saw that as well - I was going to finish Another Life before starting The Boys - But when I get back from my weekend away I'm jumping straight into it. Fingers crossed it ends up being as good as it looks

My favourite was the:

"You have been working on a way to communicate with an alien spaceship that landed on earth 6 months ago..."* - holy crap sticks

*I'm paraphrasing - I can't remember the exact words

Let's greenlight some total twaddle!
God knows how this stuff gets the go-ahead. I ditched it quick smart.

Not keen on The Boys either.

How To Sell Drugs Online (fast) is a riot though.  ;D

Netflix's business model appears to be to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks - forget pilots, proof of concept and focus groups.

I need to hurry up and finish my Sci-fi series so I can hand it to Netflix before they change their business model :-)
