SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Simplyscripts Collaborative Effort  /  Collaborator wanted for Musical Crime Drama

I'm working on Rebels. It's like Boyhood meets 8 Mile meets Stand by Me meets Sicario. My vision for this film to have an all Latino cast.

I'll break down the plot:
1) They known each way other since they were kids.
2) Dreaming of being in the music industry
3) Being in a drug deal gone wrong.
4) Their friendship is about to fall apart.

Can you help me with the plot and characters?

Edit, thread was originally titled:
Logline Of Musical Crime Drama.

Skip, reading this request it appears that what you're looking for is not actually Logline advice (as previously noted in your header) but a collaborator.

Loglines are teasers e.g. usually a one-sentence, maybe two, precis of your screenplay summary to hook the reader.

I've reposted this here for you and:

One of the big decisions you should make is setting. Where it's set will give you the context of some of the difficulties and challenges the characters will face.

Social and environment contexts are strong influences on music. Hip Hop didn't come out of Maine or Nebraska. It's a product of it's time and the people in a certain situation.

So pick your setting and Genre of music. You want the characters to be Latino so I'm assuming you have those in mind.   8 Mile isn't just about Eminem's life it's about the world he inhabited that made him.

I live in Bristol in the UK so that's the story I would tell. Drum and Base music is big here and the drug of choice is pills and MDMA. It's also a big uni town.

With your parameters and my setting you could tell the following story.

Act 1
Two girls meet at Bristol university. They seem c
like complete opposites but bond over a love of drum and base music.
They get heavy into the scene and decide to make their own music.

Act 2.1
They start selling drugs to buy the equipment and discover they have a real talent for it.
But it's a fast paced life and they start to rely on the drugs to keep going.

Act 2.2
As the music takes off, outside pressures start to pull them apart. Drug addiction, the drug underworld and pressure from conservative families and the uni to keep up their studies takes it toll.

Act 3
Do they stay on the path of self destruction to follow they musical talents or do they give up and conform to the pressures of adulthood?

You can see how the Setting and genre really shaped the direction of the story. It's a coming of age story of two girls manoeuvring in a world that already exists. What you've got is too broad. Play around with some ideas, have fun with some outlines and you'll find the story you want to tell.

Hey Skip, did you acknowledge Sam's response? Maybe you did via PM...
If you haven't yet, I'll just say: Sam, some very good food for thought and starting off points to inspire Skip further. Great input!

Thank's LC. Hopefully Skip finds it useful although I noticed he has a near identical thread for another idea of his. Not sure what he is really after.
