Came across this and thought it summed things up so even I could understand.  :)

Still somewhat in the dark however of what writers should do though.

This is all part of the big dispute betwen the WGA and agencies/managers.

When I was over in Nashville I got to network with a few people with connections and they said what's happening right now is a lot of writers are cutting out these middlemen and going to the production companies, making deals with them direct.

I presume these writers are already known and have the right connections though, which makes sense. For those of us yet to make a breakthrough I rekon this is tougher to do. Most production companies won't take unsoliciited material.

Yes, a friend of mine used this video to explain why he was forced by the WGA to fire his agent. In his case that was UTA. I personally doubt that I'll ever get to the point where I need an agent from one of the big four. :)
