Well, that was a much friendlier-ish week. The nicest gift I can conjure is to give those who are awake at this godforsaken hour a little bit extra time. Anything beyond that is not within the scope of my understanding of empathy. Good luck in week 3.

Theme: "Nature vs. Nurture." (More than likely, you'll have, at least, heard of the topic. For more detail, there are plenty of articles about it, to be found.)

Genre List:

Action/Adventure
Comedy
Crime
Horror
Western
Mystery
Sci-Fi
Thriller
Fantasy
Historical

My whole story is going to be centered around a shoehorn...especially the genre. ;D

Here's a question:

What do I do if I'm way past page 5 with my idea and I need to get rid of a few things in it but the best one to drop is the place and the object I'm trying to wedge in?
Otherwise I'll be getting rid of all the good stuff.

Ha! Bill, I do that all the time. Or, Hubby is talking about something - politics or Covid, or something, and I'm devising plot in my head. And then he says, what do you think? And I say, what? Oh, sorry I was away with the fairies.  ;D

I know!
I know what to do with the Assigned Character. I'll put him/her right on the title page as in "written by an Assigned Character"
It's not wedged in.
It's important as no script would be written without him.

Several pages written then whittled down to five. Will recheck, edit and check again tomorrow because today is pub day. First time in four months I’m seeing my mates. So script work is on hold for one day. Possibly two :-)

It's going to be a complete disaster.

Repercussions: you will lose .1 points off your overall score for each week missed.

As for Anthony, you still have to pick your variables for the week. Might want to discuss that with him directly, to ensure you don't duplicate any.

I have a question about genre. If there are 2 represented, for example: a sci fi that's also a comedy...or thriller that's also a fantasy... is that okay or is it supposed to be only the one genre given?
Posted by: LC, July 20th, 2020, 5:56am; Reply: 71
Marnie, What I do remember Blondie saying was that Comedy covered Romance and Crime covered Drama. A little fusion is okay.

Having said that I suppose Sean could weigh in with more clarification but one of his favourite sayings during this Tournament has been that he let's you be the judge.

Personally, I don't mind a bit of crossover.
Others might see it differently.
Posted by: stevie, July 20th, 2020, 6:10am; Reply: 72
Yeah a bit of comedy in another genre is fine even a sci fo or horror. Comic dialogue not over done is ok.   And crime and mystery can be similar so fine by me

But once you have talking animals in a thriller or action then it becomes fantasy.  It’s getting around the system and I don’t like it as the rest of us are busting a gut trying to do it properly.

Spewing now I didn’t put the Death Star or talking dildoes in my Rd 3 one.

Well now I'm extra glad I didn't draw SciFi cus the only way I could have wrapped my noggin around it is to make it like Star Wars....which is obviously a fantasy. Lol.

Okay...so only human characters unless it's fantasy. Thanks for clarifying.

Simplest I can put it: you select a genre. As long as that genre is represented, you're fine. Doesn't matter if others peek their heads in.

I’m looking at the criteria we’re left with and thinking there’s still a theme to be incorporated and I really don’t think I will be able to do that. I mean the genres that are left are already a problem. Don’t want to say I’m out now but I’ll probably will be.

It also takes a lot of time to write then review and I’m beat. I’m also translating someone’s screenplay right now and it’s screenplays all around. I’m screenplay struck,

That was for a week and will resume in September for a total of 4 months for me. Hopefully. I'm totally not against it after all this screenplay business. And I thought that thing was the hardest.

Kham, don’t sweat on the theme. If you’re bogged down, start writing now. I’ve written one of the scripts already and am halfway through the other. If the themes happen to fit (which happened by chance for my Rd 3 one) then great. If the themes don’t fit, I’m still posting them as the opportunity to create 2 really good scripts is too good.

I haven’t marked down any based on the themes (most peeps haven’t I think) only if the shoehorning has been too convenient, and if the genre has been fiddled with.

Wow! That's gotta take some talent. Well done, you!
...

Anyway... Read and commented on all and my votes are in.
Looking forward to groaning about the next theme.

P.S. Bit of a ghost town around here at the moment.

Voted!

I have some good/bad news. Good because I've got a job and start on Monday. I've been out of work since April and living off meagre handouts from the government and savings. Bad because I've been writing every day and produced so much content. I've loved it and wish I could work full time professionally as a writer, but writing doesn't pay. Well, not enough for me to live off anyway. I'm back to writing on weekends :-(

I'm not out of the tournament or making any excuses. All I'm saying is I will endeavour to read/review all scripts, it will just take me longer to get through them from now on. Just two weeks to go, I'm sure I'll manage!

I'm struggling with the grading this round... there are scripts that have clearly made no attempt to address the theme, and where the genre is also suspect.

So with a limited 1-5 system which is what we have here... a 2.6 or 3.6 is rounded up to a 3 or 4. But then a 2.4 and a 3.4 is a 2 and a 3....

Great news on job, Mark! That's become a rare thing these days. So glad you were able to find something. I hope it's a job you like!! Lost mine in March and can't find anything that paid close to what I was making. Crazy times.

Indeed. It's about a 50% pay cut I've had to accept. Better than nothing and maybe in a year or two I can crawl myself back to what I was once earning.

yup, it's a tricky one.

The scoring system is not a bad one, but as you say sometimes hard to separate out. Especially as you could have good script, but weak connection to theme/parameters - if we don't adjust, whats the point in the first place?

I haven't given a 1 because the script are all fair efforts

I have rarely given a 5 as I reserve this for a 'blow me away' type script

so that leaves 2-4 to differentiate. But averaged out across us all it seems to work out

I did wonder whether we should be given our average review figures to see who's mean, and who's just plain lovely  8)

would that change some scores? don't know.

If I remember my statistics education, it shouldn't matter if someone votes 1-4 or 2-5 (either thinking no one is excellent or no one is crap). Where scores can muddy the system is if everyone is average. I've rarely scored an entry a 5, but I have dished out a 1 a couple times through the years (sometimes for my own, if I could). So mean/lovely is relative to the curve that they vote on. If they voted 15 entries as poor and 2 as very good, that can screw the scoring as well. I usually think of just how I would order them from first to last based on how they fit the parameters and how well crafted they are. A well crafted entry that is light on theme is better than an entry that ticks all the boxes but is riddled with mistakes.

But then again, maybe I'm just blowing smoke.

There are three ways this gets handled in serious surveys.

First, yuge sample size. Law of large numbers ensures the effect you mentioned above.

Second, inter-rater reliability. At the opposite end of the scale, you can measure that different raters' scores of overlapping targets are sufficiently correlated that the ratings mean something. This is usually combined with attention checks or manipulation checks (where the answer is already known by the surveyor, to make sure people are taking the survey seriously.)

Third, rater fixed effects. That is, you take a particular rater's average score and subtract it from each of his/her scores. All of your scores will be centered on zero, but comparable to one another. You can go all-out with z-scores (subtract the average then divide by the standard deviation) to normalize if one rater has higher variability than another.

It'd be a fun exercise to see the margin of error for the ratings here (standard deviation of ratings devided by the square root of number-of-ratings times a scaling factor*), but all it would really show is that the top few entries are really close to one another. We already know that.

* Scaling factor comes from looking up "number-of-raters minus one" on the first column of this table and using the third column, which will be something in the neighborhood of 2.15.

I mainly score based on obvious effort. To fit in 5 variables in 5 pages and come up with a decent story is beyond challenging. Some weeks you have easier variables than others, and sometimes you have to work with variables that are just completely insane. If I see someone tried to fit all 5 in, even if they were light on a couple or even "kind of" shoehorned...I give them credit for trying. If there is no attempt at theme...they get a 1. Zero sign at an attempt of the assigned genre...1. If they just tell us someone has a certain job but it's not shown in their actions...1. Object...personally, I dont care much. As long as it's doing something and not just a prop, it's there. Location doesn't seem to be much of an issue. I think the majority of scripts so far have made good use of that.

IMO, people are going to vote on their personal take on this challenge. Some review and score according to their prefence on fave genres.  Some even review and score based on their own made up rules of what's acceptable and what's not. So based on all that, I'm not sure showing averages would enlighten us to anything.

Sean probably knows the history of us and how stingy or lovely each of us is.

I have no pattern, but usually there is at least one excellent from me. This time there were two.

Actually this time there were a variety of grades when other times (not often) there's many goods and just a couple deviations.

There are so many factors to care for in this comp. So I decided that genre and theme are more important than anything else. I don't see many that are not on the theme btw or there's no attempt to touch the theme.
And genre better be somewhat close to the labeled.

I score according to my view of how the script has tried to meet the Challenge, i.e. use the criteria, meet the theme in stated genre and fit them into a coherent story.

But I think maybe we might be taking it a little too seriously if we get into debates on statistics ;-)

I wasn't really concerned about the statistics, I was just pointing out that if in our minds the script is a 3.4, then the script is still a 3, as is a 2.6 script. So the quality can vary widely, by 8/10 of a point, and the scripts will receive the same grade.

Rachel: The... the WENUS?
Chandler: Weekly Estimated Net Usage Systems. It's a processing term.
Rachel: Oh, that WENUS.

Nothing as exciting as a WENUS in my work. One branch of statistics (called Bayesian) gets upset whenever you talk about a “p value,” but their own methods involve a lot of “priors” and “posteriors.” The nerdy inside jokes basically write themselves.

First, thanks for the essential work that you do.

Second, working 24/7 is tough but now that it's 25/7, you can take a breather ;)

Thanks Frank but I'm not a health care worker so no thanks necessary. I run office buildings and property management was considered essential from the get-go.

I was able to work from home most days from mid-March through most of April but my engineers were on the front line, every day. They are the real heroes.

I've been back in the office since last week of April.
