Welcome to Week 4. Unfortunately, we did have two writers who had to drop out after Week 3, so, for the rest of you, I've become used to the idea that you're all the heroes, fighting the good fight against a sadistic villain. Not this week. This week, your job is to play the proverbial bad guy and, in your scripts, have your protagonist be the villain. It's just that simple. Good luck. =)

Theme: "Your Hero Is the Villain."

Genre List:

Action/Adventure
Comedy
Crime
Horror
Western
Mystery
Sci-Fi
Thriller
Fantasy
Historical

Who dropped?
Warren and Jordan? Looks like there’s someone else, is there?

And how to be positive, negative or indifferent about this theme? Looks like additional variable and not a theme.

Joe (Spqr) did. He has his reasons, which are private. Unless he feels like sharing them, I would leave it at that.

That's true, this is much closer to a variable than a theme. However, it's something that I've just been wanting to see. I didn't say positive, negative, indifferent this time. So, all in all, grading for this round should be easier and more streamlined.

So, how bad is bad enough? Does he have to kill, think of killing, or maybe some unethical behavior will do?

Villain. I have no other way to say it, other than that's it's the opposite of the hero.

Well, it was only a vague idea not written, thank God. :)

So, just to clarify your villain could appear to be the good guy (hero) initially, right?
Posted by: MarkRenshaw, July 24th, 2020, 2:13am; Reply: 11
Interesting.  I could do a traditional villain who is simply a villain,  or a more modern villain who thinks they are the hero and has reasons for their actions.

I also hear Trump is joining in this week using the elements person, woman, man, camera,  T.V. I can't wait to see what he comes up with!

The villain is the hero of his/her own story. But I think it'd need to be clear we're talking about something more serious than a difference of opinion on what is right.

Frank: Yep, I'm thinking not like some silly lovers quarrel villain. High octane villain, (not comical, though, I hope) or at least very nasty.

Ant: I'm with you there.

So, just thinking, your main character is the bad guy, not necessarily the hero in the conventional sense, but the guy who comes out on top. ??

I'm having trouble with this:

Given the the antagonist is synonymous with “the bad guy", it's not easy.

There have been many films that either have the villain as the protagonist...and some of who have reson to think they are in the right.

There Will Be Blood
My Best Friend's Wedding
American Psycho (although technically, Bateman was over worked and hallucinating)
Nightcrawler
Last Days Of Disco
X Men films (Magneto)
Avengers Infinity War (Thanos)

most gangster movies
some vigilante films

But I think Legacy fits too. Does it? I wish people told me here if Legacy fits this. Because I like moreof this type of stories, where the villain is not so obvious yet he's a villain.

I think stories about straight-up villains are not what Sean was going for, but we'll see...

Btw, there are a fair amount of scripts last round and this round that didn't FADE OUT. I get the page count restriction makes it difficult... but technically the actors are still there, waiting for the writer to drop the curtain, ala THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO...

To quote SeaN, he said... "have your protagonist be the villain."

I think that allows for straight up villains, anti-heroes, protags that appear to be good and then are revealed not to be, etc etc... I'll only think it's offside if the main character is not in some way the villain or villainous.

Yeah I was a guilty party of that last round. I noticed others doing the same, no FADE OUT mostly due to the five page limit, and pushing it  as far as it can go. I'm rather loose with it though in the challenge. If  it's there it's there and that's good. If it isn't, it isn't and I'm okay with it given time and page limit.

Posted by: LC, July 27th, 2020, 8:08am; Reply: 68
AJR, that's very funny about the characters being stuck in limbo on the page.  ;D

I agree on the theme not being met in the sense Blondie hoped for too. Least, I imagine... The most popular story will win out, regardless of that.

It's no easy challenge... I didn't manage one this week so not wanting to be too critical.

Obviously, I was making a joke about them being frozen in time...

In scripts we submit to prospective directors, producers, etc., it's necessary so that the reader doesn't think there are pages missing. In this contest we pretty much know the story ends at page 5.

On the other hand, it's a cheat for space, given that space is so precious with the page limit.

Hey, at least no one is using 9-point fonts or setting their paper to legal size.

The best one I ever heard of was a word-count limit, and since the staff were using software word counts, one guy got the idea to put in a page-sized image of about four paragraphs of text.

I wouldn’t mind a nice healthy dissention. In old times we used to have mods chase us and take out posts in bulks!

Darren could comment on his own script for sure without revealing he's the author.
I don't like doing it cause I'm too obvious, but I notice some people are pretty canny.

That's always backfired in the past. Not that folks figured out it was me who wrote it, but in order to"throw people off" I'd throw in a few criticisms of my own work which others missed. Then other folks chime in, and in 'agreeing' with me, the reviews take a bigger nose dive  ;D

Agree with DJS on this - positive comments seem like a campaign for your own script, and negative comments are just weird...

If someone wants to spend the time figuring out which single script I haven't commented on, then have it yet. I'm too busy to engage in that.

Ugh. Now I have to start thinking which one is Darrens and if I missed his protagonist as well.

If I say yes, would that narrow it down? lol

The bit that I've noticed with this one is the theme seems to have confused people... people are looking for anti-heroes or goodies who reveal themselves to be bad later, and that's not what Sean initially said.

To quote Sean
"This week, your job is to play the proverbial bad guy and, in your scripts, have your protagonist be the villain. It's just that simple."

So protag* = main character... has to be a villain.

I think the further discussion in the thread has then confused things.

*Protags don't have to be good as far as any definition I can find.

That's how I understood Sean as well - your main character is a bad guy. This is actually simple, I agree with him on the fact that it's simple to understand. Unless i totally misunderstood what he said and "your protag" doesn't mean "your main character"

@Darren, I think you just need to forget about it.
I wanted to respond to you on mine last time. No one suggested the thing you said, you totally mixed up things there, cos you studied history and mixed up the names. But I took ahold of myself. Now it's your turn I guess.

Agreed. I've also noticed if the villain has a reason for being the bad guy, some folks seem to think that makes them not a true villain as it is understandable why they are being bad, but that is not correct. Most villains see themselves as the hero and have reasons for their villany.

It's bloody tough coming up with anything with the criteria we have left so I just think we should cut each other some slack.

It is, and I agree.

Having said that, I've been around these parts awhile now, and though some people are kinder in their reviews than others, overall there's no cutting of the slack in anon challenges. It's dog eat dog just as Blondie intended it to be.

Very true. I'm being more lenient with reviews and not disqualifying anyone if they have at least attempted to include the parameters, but my score is still based on how much I enjoyed the story, the characters and if they have put an original spin on it.

Personally I think there was a lot of creativity, imagination and very decent scripts this week.
I didn't read one bad story, just different levels of good.

P.S. You have coyotes, (would love to see them!) we have a new family of wallabies in the front yard. The Joey is so cute.

I vaguely recall a hanging in 1877, Johnny, in which the hangman wore a suit of armour, the gallows was decked out like the Titanic, and the condemned guy was in a fish tank.

Originally, my rough draft plan for week 2 (way back when I decided I was going to do this year's) was something very close to that. It was to pick a number between 0 and 9. For every number away from my number that you picked, you'd lose .1 points off your score for that week (like Lucky Seven on The Price is Right). Seemed WAY too mean-spirited. And evil. And I bet some people would've quit. So, I chose something a little bit more family-friendly. That makes me almost not a villain, right?
Posted by: LC, July 29th, 2020, 8:52pm; Reply: 122
Well Blondie, you didn't act on that evil thought at least.

But this week's evil dastardly theme remains to be seen.
I'm interested in scores for people ignoring theme altogether.

We shall see...
