So, what did you guys think??

Saw it on HBO Max. The story was actually half decent. At least, somewhat coherent. There's no tournament as Rene mentioned. It's more like an origin thing where a new group of champions has to learn on the fly as they're being hunted. It's brisk and doesn't take itself too seriously. Although probably more serious than it should. The characters were hit and miss. I thought the main character was the most bland. But Kano was hilarious, every word pure gold. I would watch a solo Kano film in a heartbeat.

This was a pretty fun movie! Not high-brow by any means, but entertaining the whole way through. Some pretty crazy gore, which made me happy. And Kano is awesome!! Biggest negative for me was the editing(particularly the last act) and the soundtrack, which wasn't nearly as good as the 95 original. If you thought the trailer looked cool, I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that you will enjoy the movie. :)

Yeah, the 95 music is the best. I'm listening to it right now.

Nice!! I wish there had been the more human version of reptile in this newest one.

Liked it for what it was, some pretty sweet action scenes. I'll definitely watch a sequel.

Decent fun, some good fight sequences too, better than I'd expected tbh

I loved it. Annihilation, which I had never seen before, not so much. :D

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

Cole was a bit of a secondary character. I thought the opening, Scorpion and Goro were the best scenes. I love the cinematography and aspect ratio, which grounded the story a bit. The "red stuff" was well done. The acting was pretty good for a video game movie.

I can't wait until Saturday to see if the 1995 movie, which I haven't seen in ages, still holds up.

I for one liked Mortal Kombat's interesting narrative choice of not having one on one tournaments a great deal. There was one fight that did call back to a fighting stage of the video games, but that was the only one that I could tell. As a fan of actor Lewis Tan from Into The Badlands I was hoping he'd do well in the lead. In truth, Cole is set up as the lead, but other established Kombat characters outshine that new character. Especially Sonja (Jessica McNamee) and Kano (Josh Lawson) Cole is in a fish out of water situation, i get that. He's "supposed" to be out of place and filled with some doubt.  It does make sense story wise, but they still don't give him much to do by the second act.

Sub Zero (Joe Taslim) is established as the big bad, the character FX are awesome. He also takes a backseat in the second act in favor of lesser known MK characters who will serve as mere Fatality cannon fodder. I did like the bad guy's plans to kill off as many future combatants as they can before the tournaments to tip the scales. But building up the character just to save him until the last fifteen minutes?

And in those last fifteen, Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) finally shows up after that terrific opening scene. They are also the main characters in the marketing. His battle with Sub Zero made all the trailers. It is fantastic to be sure. But we need did more Scorpion. Which also begs a question. In the video game lore, it isn't uncommon for OG characters to have offspring or  protégés, s who take up the mantle of the OG characters. Sub-Zero being a good example. So...why wouldn't Cole be Scorpion 2,0?  Anyway, I hope Lewis Tan either gets better roles or they use the Cole character more better in the follow up if there is one.

I loved it overall, was entertained. I liked a lot more than the 95 version, even though if I had to say anything about the 95 Kombat, it was the soundtrack and use of locations.
