As the challenge title implies, there will be three short challenges in relative quick succession.

An amount of time will be given to read and review scripts - approx 48 hours for the first challenge, and then:

- The announcement of the second challenge will follow, read and review, and then -
- There will likely be some breathing space before The third and final challenge is announced.

Though all three challenges will be of varying page lengths they will all be short page counts to enable ease of reading/reviewing.

Stay tuned for ongoing announcements and to keep up with deadlines.

The deadline/countdown clock will be posted at the start of each challenge.

So plain and simple, this is what you want... that couldn't be more clear.

1 - 2 page only for the first, and right up your alley, Warren, so you should get this done in a couple of hours.  ;D

Hhhhmmmmm.
It’s just coming up to midnight here in Bonnie. I’m working tomorrow (Monday - Friday) 8hrs per day from 0700 - 1500.
Minus family time and before i go to bed it leaves me roughly six hrs in total to get something written before deadline.
Is that possible? Of course it is, the quality of my stories isn’t that great that I can’t hammer out some dreadful guff in that time.
Count me in :-)
Great wee challenge.

The tail would be the end right? Apologies if that's a dumb question.

Good on you, Owen!

This might very well be the hardest challenge for some...
Or the easiest, depending.

Yep, generally. As long as you surprise /shock/ give us something we weren't expecting, you'll be good.

Gazza, nope I don't think Aussies can take credit for this one.
The mother country as is often the case can take credit.  ;D

Oxford Dictionary def:

Sting in the tail -
...an unexpected, typically unpleasant or problematic end to something.

Cambridge:
If something, such as a story or joke, has a sting in the/its tail, it has a surprising or unpleasant part that only becomes clear at the end.

Just think of when you're watching a Horror, or equivalent Thriller, ScFi, and something entirely unexpected, horrifying or shocking happens. Maybe it appears with a happy ending but then there's a big unforeseen catch at the end.

Just wow us, frighten us etc., with your story. You'll be right.
Oh, and there are no stupid questions.

As the challenge title implies, there will be three short challenges in relative quick succession.

Will there be an overall Writer's Choice for the cumulative scores from the three challenges or just one per challenge?

EDIT:

That was probably a stupid question, just read the brief again and this is called the Mini Writer's Tournament (or MWT as I will refer to it now or is it the MTC?), so that probably answers my question.

I only have my lunchtime today to write anything - so if I can't get an idea down in that 1 hour then I am out - hopefully, I get an idea by then.

Great idea on the mini-tournament. Some tight deadlines so hopefully there are a few writers who make it to the end.

May challenge submissions are not closed - the countdown clock at the top shows how long left to submit an entry (above that is a link to submit your script)

By the sounds of it you clicked the normal "Submit your script" which says "Script submissions are closed for the May Challenge." - meaning that normal script submissions are closed until the May challenge is over

I've been scanning flash horror stories all day in-between work for inspiration and there are loads out there, lots of them are decent reads, it's just the twist endings are all so similar or follow very predictable traits. It's tough to come up with something a bit different.

If I get time tomorrow I'll have a go.

Bedfellows was actually what inspired me to write my first ever short, Lullaby. It follows the same pattern, a quick misdirect then a jump at the end (it's not very good). It was picked up 2 weeks after posting it here on SS and was filmed as Hush.

So Bedfellows actually has a special place for me, I feel like it's what really started it all.

Here's the old thread where I actually mention it as my inspiration, a blast from the past...

It sure will.

As I said in the last challenge, by the time I have to submit I've read the script so many times that I've found hidden themes and subtext I never meant to put there and realize I've actually written a modern-day masterpiece...

Then the reviews come in and I come back down to earth  ;D

So I wrote something.

The last time I tried something like what I've just written I was so eviscerated I didn't write anything for months.  Obviously didn't learn my lesson and I'm ready to be kicked in the private parts again.

Mug coveters beware.

Still, I'm guessing a few mug winners in this lineup so everybody should be very afraid.

As sad as it is for me to say, I'll be sitting this one out. If the Halloween OWC proved anything, it's that I'm no good at twists or gut-punching the audience which I'd prefer to do. That takes some talent which I don't think I have. Best of luck to those who'll be entering.

Haven't been active here lately, but did manage to slide some words together for this challenge.

Everyone will hate it.

And that's fine. Just trying to get back into the swing of writing new stuff.

Ant, honestly, at this point I don't know.

Don's rules there, so if you can get an extra past him good luck.  ;)
He may well see what the final count is before deciding so make sure your best offering is there.

Competition will be stiff. I see another mug winner has entered the fray, too.

V.nice to have you and Frank onboard.

Yay! It's gonna be good.

I sat out the December 2020 and this year's February challenge.

But ok, I might just get one in, but don't expect anything earth-shattering.

As it's only 1-2 pages of course I've ended up writing more than one... but I may just enter the one I think is strongest after I've re-read them all... then submit the others further down the line.
Posted by: Warren, May 11th, 2021, 3:11am; Reply: 96
For what its worth, if people are going to be submitting more than one script can there at least be a limit?
Posted by: LC, May 11th, 2021, 3:20am; Reply: 97
I think I'll make an executive decision and say:

1 entry per person.

Apologies it wasn't up top. I really should have anticipated the question with such a short page count.

No multiple entries.

I hope that sounds fair.

Just don't blame me if Don lets one slide.

Just show the audience your left hand and then smack 'em round the head with your right.

Watch that Bedfellows short for inspiration as it's simple and effective..
In the left hand there is a lump in the bed next to her, must be her lover.... then monster in the right hand and SMACK!

Play on peoples preconceptions and assumptions... I hear hooves, must be a horse... oh wait, it's a Rhino!... see, you thought the twist there was that it was going to be a Zebra.

Take this word "talent" out of your vocab when you think about your writing, it will hold you back. "I'm not talented enough" is a dangerous mindset and implies there is no hope. Practice and study and write and practice some more... you got this. There is a simple phrase we say in my household when something gets tough, we just shout to ourselves "Yes I can!" (It helped the other half through labour twice)

Best of luck

I think I have submitted (One of these days I will do it wrong and not get my entry in lol)

I was feeling super pleased with my entry, it follows a basic and well-trodden path but I thought I had done it well, then I showed it to the other half... I don't think I've ever seen her look so bored lol

Oh well, I'm in anyway.

Nice pep talk from Matt, too. Ha! Just read Matt's last post.

I agree. It works a treat in Bedfellows.

Bedfellows is fine, it's just a rework of the "There's a monster under the bed" then when you look under the bed the same kid is there saying, "There's a monster in my bed" jump scare, which has been done so many times.

This is the issue with flash fiction in particular. As there really are only a handful of twist endings a lot of them are similar. You can't get away from that so the trick is to try and give things a different spin.

So I've had a go and I'm in! Managed to break something at work (which is my job, I test business software and websites) which gave me some free time. It's all very rushed and last minute so that is my excuse if it is poo!

I'm glad I read the comments as I had an idea for a 2nd one I was going to write and I've never entered more than one before, but now I see it's 1 entry per person so I'll keep that idea for another time.

Everyone reading is going to be expecting a twist or surprise, so the trick is to make that twist so wide open it could be anything. Or so out of left field it knocks the reader out. And not cheesy.

I think I hate this challenge, lol. I keep thinking I'm clever and keep getting reminded it's all in my head.

The frolicking feline phrenologist was actually a dog in a cat suit this whole page and a half! And after a mild electrical shock, she got a beesting in the tail.

How hard is this? ;)

I don't think I ever got that email last time. I checked to make sure my submission was in the list when they went live. Assuming the same this time.

Sorry Paul but according to the internet...

Originally Velveeta was made from real cheese. Today, it's mainly whey protein concentrate, milk protein concentrate, milk, fat, and preservatives. By the Food and Drink Administration's standards, that's not real cheese—which is why the FDA forced Kraft to change its label from "cheese spread" to "cheese product."
Posted by: Gary in Houston, May 11th, 2021, 2:51pm; Reply: 124
So now we have to refer to it as "Mac and Cheese by product".  That doesn't sound as tasty!

Fake news perpetrated on the masses by Big Cheese.

(I cover all of this in my sitcom pilot "In The Dog House." Written several years ago... it's very prescient.)

If it's yellow (ish), comes in brick form (no matter how large), can be melted and eaten with a Dorito... it's cheese.

Speaking of cheese and Dorito's... love me some (authentic) nacho cheese Doritos. That's some real food right there.

Kinda like a Cujo plot with a twist.

P.S. I'm going to look at altering the announcement drop for the next one.
