This may sound like a stupid question so forgive me but is the storyline about aliens being stationed on earth and harvesting humans for food copyrighted? There have been a few scripts-turned-into-movies that use this story so can people repeat this type of story or do they avoid copyright problems by slightly making small differences from the original when they use this type of story?

Don’t think you can copyright an idea or a premise or whatever you want to call it. Have at it.

It is perfectly OK for you to write your version of Aliens harvesting humans. As said, you cannot copyright an idea.

Ideas are ethereal, in the air - it's the execution of that idea you copyright.
