What’s this? Is it some sort of hint? Something to do with that fish? Did someone say “Twist and Trout”? 😂
I’ll see myself out. 😊

I'm thinking about this twist. Let's say I can't promise anything and say that I'm either in or out. What will be considered as a twist - if I'm in or if I'm out?
I'm very curious here.

In filmmaking, a twist is an unexpected turn in the plot, narrative, or character's perception that surprises the audience.
It can be a sudden revelation or event that alters the direction of the story, changes the audience's understanding of previous events, or introduces a new conflict.
When it happens near the end of a story, it is known as a twist ending or surprise ending.
Famous examples:
In The Sixth Sense, Dr Malcom Crow (Bruce Willis) is revealed to have been dead all along.
The Crying Game: As Fergus and Dil are about to become intimate, Dil undresses and reveals that she is transgender.
Psycho: The Plot: Marion Crane is murdered at a desolate motel by the mentally-ill mother of its shifty owner, Norman Bates.
The Twist: Bates murdered his mother years before, then developed a split personality that made him believe he is his mother. He murdered Marion disguised as his mother.
Primal Fear The innocent young defendant, played by Edward Norton, is actually a manipulative and cold-blooded killer.
Shutter Island Teddy Daniels, is revealed to be Andrew Laeddis, a patient at the Ashecliffe asylum.
Gone Girl Amy Dunne, the missing wife, is actually alive and orchestrated her own disappearance to frame her husband, Nick Dunne.
The Others Grace, her husband, and her children are all dead - they are in fact the ghosts, not revealed to the end.
There are plenty more examples, Kham. I'm sure others can add their own favourites.
The audience is basically led up the garden path to believe one thing and then there's usually a shock reveal.
As far as you're concerned a kind of weak twist would be if you promised you were in, even said you were going to win, and then we discovered not only did you not put an entry in but that this challenge was actually concocted not by Don, but by you. 🤣

Aww! Twists are my thing, but I'm way too busy at the moment to take part.
For anyone looking to have their short produced, filmmakers LOVE twist endings.

Yes, Khamanna. The twist of whether your not you are in or out of the OWC is an excellent, nuanced take on the challenge. It sets up ambiguity and adds an additional layer of story telling to your work leaving the reader to wonder, "Did Khamanna write this or not?"
Very good setup to the challenge, as opposed to this approach:

Ah, but could this also be misdirection? Could "I" actually be entering under Pia's name, who says she's definitely out? Or, could Pia be using some misdirection in telling everyone she's out?
Maybe, Kham, Pia, and I all are writing 2 pages each and then throwing them into an AI writing package that will combine them into an incoherent mess?
Do I even remember how to use my screenplay software? And, whether I do or not, will I produce another comedy classic, all written on Word, loaded with run-on sentences and mindless mumbo jumbo?

It's been several years since I was involved in an OWC.
What happened to all the hilarious, endless questions peeps ask about the challenge? Is that a thing of the past?
Well, whether it is or isn't, I'll throw some questions out.
What if my entry exceeds the 6 page maximum by more than 13 pages?
Can we write about a person who gets their butt glued to an 85" TV screen during a Taylor Swift concert?
Is it acceptable if all my characters are named Markus, or would that be too confusing?
If I lose internet and electricity, is it cool if I handwrite an entry and mail it to The Don, who can scan it? Wait...if that is cool, and I decide I can't pay for my internet or electricity and actually do this, is it going to be too obvious which entry is mine?
Is there a minimum and/or maximum # of characters, and if I have both human and nonhuman characters, would that affect the minimums and maximums?
I think that's all I can think of now that I had questions on.

Are script submissions closed until Monday 5th March 2026? Gonna be a fair few queued - haha, I'm so funny - not
Uh, right, can start trying to think of a plot twist that won't be shit and obvious - I smell failure :'(

Oh, lot's of twisty answers for me here. I'm reading through and trying to make sense of them.
And I did! I know what to do! I do! I know!
Will I follow what I know would be a twist for me.

Kham will probably be in the kitchen choping up something mysterious with one of those fancy knives she always writes about. I guess the twist is that it's not HER kitchen and the guests may be vegans. Appertaining to "a person who gets their butt glued to an 85" TV screen during a Taylor Swift concert?" The only valid response is, "Sorry, I must have sat on it." Sometimes, a glimpse of SimplyScripts is like a walk on cameo in "The man with two brains. . ." Best --

Bummer :( And here I was thinking those (extra points) would be valid ‘SimplyScripts Credits’, y’know… to purchase items from the SimplyScripts Online Nightmarket of ‘Curious and Disturbing Sundries'. But alas… such a bizarre night market has never existed… or does it?

1) A handwritten screenplay would not be considered 'industry format'. You'd need to type up the script on a manual typewriter and make sure it arrives before midnight, May 2nd edt (that's 11:59:59PM edt) 2) As I have in the past, I'd make best effort to ensure the anonymity of the author probably by printing out all of the scripts and scanning them back pdf so all scripts more or less look similar.

What about pickled herring? I'm quite fond of those.
I am, too.
The fact that they're pickled could work out to be quite the twist. Or maybe, you don't reveal they're pickled until the second you want to add a twist.

We cover it with boiled potato, mayo/sour cream, then a layer of carrots, again mayo with sour cream and beets, again mayo with sour cream. We call it herring in furs.
Just sharing. It's a type of Russian salad we make in my country. I love it!

I just had an African Prince offer me a similar deal, but I’m trusting SCAM for a genuine bargain! I’m in! 😂
However, unlike that African Prince, I will come to your house, place of work or bar-b-que and tell your friends and family you are, quite possibly, the voice of a generation.
I could ask a bunch more silly questions, but it might piss The Don off...and I do not want to do that.
Here's a non-silly question...
How many entrants do we usually see in OWC's? I remember back in the days, sometimes, there would be 20+. Is that still possible?
In the past few years there are been about on average 10 or so submissions. I wasn't actively marketing the challenge because new folks to the challenge didn't "get it" and there were a lot of folks who entered and then didn't review or score scripts and I really didn't have the time to manage the challenge.
Now that I'm unemployedsemi-retired and I have a little more time, I've done a little more 'raising awareness'. I'll be happy with 20 or so entries.

I had it in my mind that the last hand written SP to be accepted was Thelma and Louise. AI says NO!
No, the screenplay for Thelma & Louise was not handwritten. Carolyn "Callie" Khouri, the screenwriter, likely typed or wrote it out using a word processor, as was common practice at the time for screenplays in the early 1990s.

A herring told me that many of the entrants will contain rather obvious twists.
Sadly, when the reader knows there's going to be a twist, that twist usually is easy to spot up front.
We'll see how we all handle this...

the page limit is what's getting me. most shorts naturally have some sort of twist/punchline but when operating within 6 pages, it all has to get cut to the bone. which I guess is just good screenwriting. but it's been tough to get in the headspace for it amidst work and other projects and the length means I can't just recycle a previous idea :P hoping to still pull something together by friday, we'll see !

To enter or not to enter…that was the decision
Ive had a busy/rough week, dealing with travel, redundancy etc
But if you dont enter you dont take part
I have an idea, its pretty lame - head space has been in limited supply.
But at the start of this year i said ‘start writing again’ and sometimes you just have to push on
Betters scripts will follow
I will enter 🎉

YES! Good to hear.
It had been so long for me that I honestly couldn't remember how to use my screenwriting software. I'm still unsure of a lot of things. It's very fortunate that I had some time to figure things uot, because if I had waited until Frisday night to start, I doubt I'd get the 1st FADE IN on the page.

I'm so fortunate to have some time on this OWC.

Complication level: 2 12 hour shifts at the hospital prior to the deadline.

I have to chime in here even though I won't have time to take part, but, IMO, will she or won't she is not a story twist.
This from google might help.
Unexpectedness: The core of a twist is its ability to surprise the audience by introducing a new piece of information or a different perspective on a previously established situation.
Impact on the Plot: The twist should have a substantial impact on the story, altering the main characters' goals, relationships, or the overall outcome.
Change in Perspective: A good twist often forces the audience to re-evaluate their assumptions and interpretations of the story's events and characters.
Variety: Twists can range from minor shifts in perspective to major revelations that completely change the meaning of the story.
My take. :)

I hope you get one over the line, Grace. As for vampires and time travel who knows? There's sure to be some weird and whacky - I'd add ghosts into the mix, but let's hope there are no: It was all a dream scripts.
Here's hoping there are some twists that we don't see coming.

We see a cabin it is small and green. The cabin looks empty, there is no one inside of it obviously. The camera circles the cabin once.
CUT TO:
The front of the cabin there is a little girl walking from behind the camera to the cabin. She first goes on the porch. Then we see her next to the door obviously scared then she knock on the door. There is a pause as she waits for an answer. There is non so she opens it and looks inside. Now the camera view is inside of the cabin. We see her looking around in the cabin. Then we see the door shut. Now we’re back outside of the cabin and we see the little girl run off of the camera.
EXT. CABIN - NIGHT
We see the dark night as we hear screaming and yelling. It sounds like some kind of party is going on. We see nothing but blackness then the night vision pops onto the screen making it look green. Then we see four or five people each one of them with a beer in there hand. Then on of the kids looks back at the camera, he’s kind of fat his face almost fills the lens as he looks into the camera. The kids name is JONATHAN.
JONATHAN WAZ UP!
Then he sticks out his tongue.
Then JONATHAN gets his face away from the camera lens and follows the others up to the cabin porch. Now the camera is inside of the porch as we see them enter. They quickly flip on a light then the kids pile up in the cabin and they cover the camera.

6 pages or less was the initial lure. So I pent most of the day at my bank trying to get a HELOC (loan). Something happened during that application process that flipped a switch in my head. An idea worth pursing. We shall see...

No, Don, bank security beat on me just fine. I only wanted to know what the security glass protecting the tellers was made of and how to get through it. That set off the alarms!

Hello, Abe!
How come no one is reading? What happened to the old days?
I guess I better slow it down or I'll be done before anyone else (other than Zack) has read anything.
I'll wait until tomorrow.
If anyone wants more detailed feedback, PM me.

Or is there a link to click on to give a rating? If there is, what is the deadline and where is the link?
If you entered a script, Don will send you a link to the voting. If you didn't enter, but reviewed and commented on all the scripts, you can ask Don for the link to vote. Meanwhile, here's a list of all the scripts entered. You reply in each script's discussion thread.

Seems to be a more recent trend Jeff that they can take a couple of days to filter through, but the % of people reading and commenting has largely improved of late.

That's cool. I'm not complaining, just commenting.
I, for one, will have all 18 entries finished today, and as I said earlier, and I do mean this, if anyone wants clarification on my comments or just more detail, hit me up.
