Quoted Text TRANSFORMERS movie - the director is set to quit the action franchise because he has “had enough” of making big budget blockbusters. The filmmaker helmed the original 2007 movie and returned this year with its sequel - Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. But Bay, who is known for his explosive action sequences, is sick of receiving negative reviews from critics who dislike his movie-making style and is determined to move away from the genre.
He says, “It’s easy to go shoot an art movie in a winery in the South of France. But people have no idea how hard it is to create something like Transformers. They (the critics) review me before they’ve even seen the movie.” And Bay admits that if film bosses give the go ahead for a third Transformers movie, they will have to find a different director. He adds, “After the three and a half years I’ve spent making these movies, I feel like I’ve had enough of the Transformers world. “I need to do something totally divergent, something without any explosions.” |

Poor Michael Bay. Nevermind the crappy storyline, horrible attempts at humor and paper-thin characters (just to name a few). He's right, the critics don't know what they're talking about. |

I like Micheal Bay and all of his movies. Yes... even Pearl Harbor. There's no way he'd ever quit making action movies. I don't believe it.

No harm there. I have no problem with Michael Bay making films, I just found the quote that Aaron originally posted from him to be kind of pretentious. |

Rent the movie Sideways. It's a great movie about two friends visiting California's wine country before one of them gets married. As writers, we should all be annoyed with that asshole Bay's remark. Phil |

So Michael Bay is a crybaby. Who would've thought... Michael Bay won't stop making big budget blockbusters. I mean, the man doesn't know how to do anything else. But let's be reasonable here, he is very good at making that kind of movies. Are they thin on story? For the most part, yeah. Are they cheesy, cliched and corny? Absolutely. But they're entertaining. Everyone knows exactly what to expect from a Michael Bay movie when you sit down and watch it, so why all the hate? You wanna hate on anyone then start with the writer.
I'm sorry, but that's just a dick thing to say. |
Why? He's not talking about the story or the final product, he's talking about the actual shoot. Of course a big budget action blockbusters like Transformer is going to be a harder shoot than filming a talky-movie at a winery in France. That doesn't mean it's going to be any better though. And, personally, I thought The Rock was a fantastic action flick. |

I'm on Michael Bay's side on this one, i'd rather watch the Rock over any arty film any day of the week, he knows how to shoot action and he can do it well, i'd like to see his critics shoot as well as him...lol, but we all know they can't |

I understand what he's going for, but the manner in which he says it comes off as dickish to me, and like he's whining. He's putting all the blame on his critics and none on himself for his films not having story/developed characters/anything besides action/FX. No one's holding a gun to his head to slave over these action films. For the record, I liked "The Rock". It's the only film of his I've liked. |

People talk about him like he's a horrible filmmaker. He's not. His films are effects-driven, so what? The Dark Knight is praised worldwide but it also has paper-thin characters (save for Harvey and the Joker) and a simple plot. So, what's the problem here? Bay's job is to entertain and he does it well. Not all movies are made for thinking about them afterwards. Plus, it's not like he wrote the script for Transformers (or most of his other films for that matter). He is unfairly bashed more than any other recent filmmaker (save Uwe Boll and Paul Anderson) for no reason whatsoever. His films are made for no other purpose other than to entertain and he succeeds almost every time. People are complaining about under-developed characters in his films. Right. Because we all know action films and Hollywood blockbusters have wonderfully-developed characters and a deep philosophy hidden within their plots. Jesus, people, lighten up and let the guy make his big bucks with his films! He just wants to get cash and make sure people have fun while he's at it. I have absolutely no problem with him. Also, everyone has every right to whine about WHATEVER they feel like whining about. You don't have to like him for it, but he sure can do it. I can see how this guy has had enough of people bad-mouthing him. It must really get to his head, going through all the hard work of making a film only to hear some *very* bitter people not appreciate it in the least, going as far as to call him a hack. Keep in mind, most of these guys prefer filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino (who is ALSO all style, no substance) , which just shows their hypocrisy. --Julio |

Hopefully I'm not the only one catching the irony of someone arguing about not arguing on a discussion board. Anyway, my initial argument wasn't about Michael Bay as a director, per se, moreso about his comments. But I've already explained myself, so I think I'm done here. |

Hahaha that's so true, when I hear people bitchin' about Michael bay i picture the comic book guy from the simpson's cuz i'm pretty sure most of them are like that. I don't see why people care, I mean if you don't like his films don't go to them and save yourself the time and money, but people seem to like to complain which is pretty pathetic, there is a lot more to life |

I read somewhere he gets a large slice of the profits of the Transformers movies, I think he got something like £50m - £75m for the first film and is in for a big payday again. I can't remember where I read this, I'll try find the source.
If you want to read good Michael Bay bashing posts (or any bashing posts), head over to the IMDB message boards. When I'm having a bad day, I read the message boards for all the bitching that goes on over there. It always makes me smile. |

My main problem with Michael Bay's films is that the look of the film tends to take priority over everything else. A lot of the time there's so much CGI, special effects, explosions & fast editing taking place that I can't tell what's actually happening on screen.
That said, I did enjoy Bad Boys and The Rock though. |

It's just too easy to moan about the lack of 'story' in Bay's films, or to complain about the effects. Bay's movies cater for a market, and they do so with enormous success.
The bit that stuck with me was how he said critics review him before seeing the film - very true. I have more respect for Bay actually working in the industry and entertaining people the world over, than obnoxious critics who are just that - critics, so no-one special. Do I personally like his films? No, but I am not pretentious enough to assume my taste in movies is better than his or the tons of people who derive real joy from his work. Pretentious little arseholes who sit and criticise all day do so 'cos they're not successful in the area they labour their criticisms - not aimed at anyone here, but that's the truth about toxic critics, isn't it. When all is said and done. Those who are working in the industry have more respect 'cos they know how hard it is to get 'in', in the first place, so they put their preferences to one side, and have the decency to be respectful.
Also, if any writer was called up by Bay, and he offered to produce their script, I doubt there would be many saying no.
My 0.02.

I think the intent of any of the Transformers movies is to have big a$$ robots fighting on screen in over the top battles...just like in the cartoon years ago. The storyline is just a vehicle to drive the sequences on top of. I know that I didn't care much about the storyline when I saw the eye candy in the first one. It's simple and just enough to let you know what's going on and carry the characters into the next over the top battle.
Can you tell what's going on? Sure...when you get it on video and watch a few times. Then you get a pretty idea. But you might want it on blu-ray so you can tell for sure. |

I've never liked Michael Bay but Transformers was fun and better suited for his sensibilities than something like Pearl Harbor. I think there's way worse out there than him and I'd have had a lot more to say about him personally had he actually decided to stop making blockbusters because of what the critics said. That's just being a crybaby. Besides, who wants to see Michael Bay do a "serious" film?
On a side note, while complaining is usually pointless and annoying, I think writers have more of a right to complain than critics since they're actually trying to put work out there (although most of them probably don't know a thing about filmmaking; it is extremely hard work). I also think it's bullshit to judge a film's merit based on how much money it makes. Who gives a shit? If that were the case, all these spoof movies would be among the cream of the crop. I'm not saying complain. On the contrary, I think the world would be a better place without trolls. I am saying, however, that writers shouldn't be so quick to belittle themselves just because some guy who makes big budget action movies makes a ton of money. |
