Can't say I agree with Spider. That was just dull for me. Spot on about Inland Empire. I hadn't even heard about until I read an interview with Lynch. Someone buy it me for Christmas!
Most I would say were dull and deservedly ignored - with the possible exception of Spirited Away.
I have seen "Harry, He's Here To Help" - it's not bad, but very Chabrol like, in the way that some American director's films remind you of Hitchcock, it seems French ones will always reflect their master of mystery.
Personally, I could think of other films for this list - a much better, but it seems to me equally ignored French thriller, for example, is "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not", which has a twist I did not see coming.
And, while we're on the subject, what about the almost totally and criminally ignored "District 13" from the Luc Besson stable - it's a fantastic action flick that gives Hollywood a run for it's money (and has a disappointing sequel).
As for American films - "Crank" has developed a cult following, but seems generally looked down on, despite being a sort of action movie by David Lynch! It has has the wonderful Jason Statham in it - and you can bet that pretty much everything he is in will be undervalued.
"The House Bunny" is an excellent comedy, but being about Bimbettes is looked down on. Emma Stone is going to be one of the faces of the next decade, and is great in this as she is in "Superbad" (best thing in it) and "The Rocker" - and Anna Faris has the best arse I have ever seen! (I suspect CGI trickery!).
Bruce Willis is another undervalued star, and films like "16 Blocks", "Hostage" and "Live Free or Die Hard" have largely been discounted, despite being very good movies (though the first is ruined by Mos Def, it should be said).
"Bubba Ho-Tep" is a wonderfully quirky and at times moving low budget horror comedy, which deserves to be better known.
I could probably think of more! We all can - under rated and over rated movies (or at least in our opinion). That's the fun of lists!
Shouldn't the article rightfully have been titled: Most Overlooked Movies Of The Last 10 Years, as opposed to underrated? From what I've gathered, most of the movies on the list are actually rated reasonably high.
Down in the hole / Jesus tries to crack a smile / Beneath another shovel load
W. Great avatar. We need more gay superheroes. I always suspected those two were close.
Anyways. More Guardian movie stuff here. They are usually pretty good with film. Peter Bradshaw and the like do occasionally have 'bennys' over certain stuff. But they are old now, bless 'em.
Rob, they are underrated here in UK. You Yanks might have rated 'em a bit higher. I'm not saying you got more taste than us... Actually, I am. Aren't I? Dimitris. You not from round here are you? That's good by the way. Place is fulla Americans, Brits and Ozzies. We need more exotic types! I'm Irish by the way. Brits. Buggers I tell ya. Oh dear. I mighta been drinking again. Niles. Another feckin' Brit. Good on ya. I haven't seen most of these films so no idea. I'll rent em though. That French one, with Audrey Tatou is it?
Ah yes. District 13. getting that one soon. Sounds good. Crank ain't for me. Unless I go really silly. Likely soon. Ren
I post this because I despised Dogville the first time I saw it at the cinema. I got a new girlfriend and, oh yes, she wants to see it. I tell her my feelings and now she really wants to see it. Typical.
So we went and, maybe it was the booze, maybe it was her, but the second time I really liked it. Seen it since and I have warm feelings and an unusual attraction to it now. Which I certainly didn't expect.
Yes, the Audrey Tautou one - great twist about half way in totally revises everything you have been watching.
D13 is excellent - watch it in French with subs, not the dubbed one (which is distracting), but avoid the sequel, which is not good.
It struck me that another film of recent years that does not seem to have got it's due attention is "Walk Hard" - probably the funniest film I have seen since the "Naked Gun" films. Judd Apatow films are usually a good bet.
Not in the circles I move in. When I've asked for a Danish in my local Gerards, they have never offered to suck anything.
Nah, Niles. You need to go the place behind the bookies in Sackville Street in town. Big fella with a ring through his nose will be guarding the door. Tell him you're a friend of Harry The Legbreaker. Ask them for a Danish. They'll sort you out - proper.
I ain't seen Antichrist so I'll pass on comment. Just gonna go see Avatar in 2D. I ain't buying all this overpriced 3D cack. Only glasses I'll wear are my John Lennon shades.
