Rick McCallum, the co-producer of Star Wars the Revenge of the Sith, revealed the details of Star Wars TV series when he was at the press conference in Japan
The story will take place in about 20 year span between Episode 3 and Episode 4. It will depict how characters end up being together (didn’t mention who). It will depict how Luke grows up.
George Lucas will start working on it as soon as he finishes Indy Jones, he said. The production will start next year, and the whole series will be about 100 hours long.
Any thoughts?
I personally think it’s the wrong direction for star wars. A Star Wars TV series would work better if it focused on a time far removed from what we've seen, either much farther back in the past of the Republic (like the Jedi's first encounter with the Sith onwards, eh?) or far after the events of ROTJ (a new Empire rises type thing).
Though earth and man are gone, I thought the cube would last forever. I WAS WRONG.
I think it sounds interesting, but the die hard fans will almost certainly lash out because it won't be everything they might want it to be. Even thogh Lucas is behind and it is his baby, someone will undoubtedly complain that these characters or those characters wouldn't do such and such or they just think it doesn't mesh with what they wanted to happen.
I've learned that Star Wars fans are some of the pickiest on the planet. Then, again, I wonder if they have seen the Holiday Special...
I like the episode of THE MUPPET SHOW where Luke Skywalker, R2D2 and C3PO, are the guests. It had a great PIGS IN SPACE segment. I only wish Yoda would have also shown up on the episode. But if he had shown up, there would have been outcry to make him a regular cast member ... which would have been awesome.
I personally can't wait for the TV series. A young Luke Skywalker as a character would make for awesome TV. I'm very interested in that particular coming of age story, but the main character of a subplot MUST be a member of the Jedi Counsel. The earlier years of Han and Chewy should be in the show. I want to know how they met, who they met, and how they met who they met. I want each episode to begin with words scrolling up the screen, but instead of saying "episode", I want each episode to be a chapter:
STAR WARS Chapter 1 "Youngling"
On Tatooine, thirteen year old Luke Skywalker is awkward and clumsy in all he attempts, except landspeeder racing.
Cindela is a girl who Luke for whom Luke has a "luke warm" emotion: Love.
Cindela will be at the big Landspeeder race. But will Luke's rival Lando impress her with his "Landocar", or will Luke impress her with his "Speedo?"
In fact, that'd make for a pretty good chapter, and I'd watch it. Cornball is fun. Even though Yoda's in exile, that shouldn't stop him from having some form of regular psychic or technological communication with at least one member of the Jedi Council. And that member must be a main character, and Yoda must therefore appear at least once per every six chapters. If any six chapters go by without a Yoda appearance, I WILL stop watching the show.
Only one problem with a character being a member of the Jedi Council: there is no Jedi Council. The only remaining Jedis in existence are Yoda and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Now, Obi-Wan is supposed to be communing with Qui-Gon Jinn and learning how to keep his image in the force after he dies, and I supposed it MIGHT be possible for he and Yoda to commune across the distance (probably discussing Luke's development), but beyond that, there won't be any Jedis because Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader killed them all.
It is more likely to deal with Luke's upbringing, Han and Chewbacca's uniting, Han acquiring the Millenium Falcon from Lando Calrissian, Leia Organa's rise to be a respected member of the Imperial Senate representing Alderaan, and the iron fist of the Empire encompassing everything. It will likely end with rumor of a Rebel spy stealing the plans for the Death Star. When Vader learns of Leia's abrupt departure in the Blockade Runner, he pursues. It is very likely that Chewbacca meets Lando before he meets Han just based on the dialogue between them in Empire, and Han and Lando have sort of falling out that would be amusing to see played out. My musings.
Some Jedis survived, and they're scattered throughout space. I wouldn't be surprised if they formed a secret counsil at an out of the way location ... and if at least one of those members communicates regularly with Yoda.
As cool as it would be, Luke and Leia are continually referred to as their last hope. They are at the end of Sith, and by Yoda and Ben during Empire. No other Jedi are said to have survived, nor implied to have at any time during 3, 4, 5, or 6. It would be very cool if there were any, but the unfortunate fact is that there are not. No Jedi means no lightsaber duals, which means the almighty blaster rules the galaxy.
The prophecy as it was related said that Anakin would bring balance to the force. I recognized when Qui-gon said it that the balance brought would be in the way of Jedi vs Sith. A master and an apprentice on each side. Palpatine and Vader are the Sith and Yoda and Obi-Wan are the Jedi. As soon as Luke started the path to become a Jedi, Obi-Wan died. The balance was maintained.
If there are any other Jedi, the prophecy is cheapened and that part is lost. I don't see it happening.
"There will be a live-action show, but I don't know if it'll be in 2006," he says. "I haven't even started writing the script. It's all minor, minor characters. It's not the Skywalker story at all - that's going on in another part of the galaxy." - New York Post
